A very simple question that was inspired by a thread I saw in the Intl' Politics section. Simply put do you think prostitution should be legalized or criminalized? Why or why not? I personally support legalization, but I'll take an OP's prerogative and elaborate on why later.
What is immoral about prostitution? Is it immoral because people who don't love each other are having sex? If that's the case, half of the housewives in Orange County should be arrested and charged with prostitution. The horrors of prostitution - the drugs, the pimps, the abuse of women - are manifestations of our policies, and our policies are sometimes (and in this case) manifestations of our fear. This irrational fear is that anything legal will be construed as honorable. John Edwards cheated on his wife while she was in a hospital dying, and that wasn't illegal. Does anybody here feel that our nation thinks cheating on your dying wife is acceptable?
We should be a nation that bases its policies on function and not fear. Make it legal, regulate it, whatever. Or let states decide. Let's just start the ball rolling and get it right.
