Is it racist to ask for immigrants to speak English?

There are many who want it stopped. It's those who are always afraid of offending who stand in the way of making any kind of meaningful progress.

Not anyone in power to speak of. They know better. But it is useful for them to work up the people. History is also full of that as well. But, I bet you, a decade from now, nothing will have changed.

Ooooo, they know better huh? Too funny. The fact is that our population is much bigger than it ever was before, and if we keep going down the path we're going down, it will soon be unsustainable. Maybe you're satisfied with the status quo, but I am not.

I hear you on that.
I hate to be the rude and obvious American that butchers another country's language.

I've got a some what crappy working knowledge of most of the prime European languages.
It's just that I almost never get to practice it, so it sucks.

What makes speaking a language poorly rude?

Once on the travel channel some show gave the tip that all you need to do is try to speak the native language and all is forgiven. You can mess up completely but if people see that you're trying they won't hate on you for it.

I have found this to be true everywhere but France.

Spanish speakers seemed to regard my struggles to remember the rudimentary Spanish I learned decades ago as the highest complement I could pay them.

If you want to emigrate to a country, the first thing you should do is learn the language before you get there. if not, you don't belong there and don't deserve to be there.

In public, whether you talk the an immigrant friend or mutter to yourself, you can speak in any language you want. From gibberish to arab to chinesse to french. It doesn't matter. But when interacting with the public and when engaging in social activities in society, you better speak the language of that country.

Unless you're a tourist. Tourists usually have programs for people who don't speak the language.

This is going to flip the anti hypenateds out totally.

English is the language of this country. So in order to function here anyone who lives here permanently should learn English. But what you do or speak at home or in your community is your affair. Ein Gutes Idea

You're missing the point. It doesn't matter whether you or I are satisfied, power wants the low wage unskilled worker, the ones most worrisome. The skilled and more capable immigrants more than hold their own here. Neither is hindered at all due to language.

Even if you think immigrants shouldn't be made to learn English, it's not racist to think they should. Because racist doesn't mean that. Xenophobic maybe?

English is only the most commonly spoken language in the United States. We don't have a national language.

If I go to a foreign country to visit, I best be able to ask for a glass of water without insulting someone's mother.
If I go to a foreign country to live and work, I best be able to speak the language, at least the basics.

I expect no less of people coming to America.....

it is in no way racist to expect an immigrant to speak the most common language here in the US.
If they choose not to they put themselves at a big disadvantage.
If you choose to move to France, learning French would be expected.
BTW, I only know a few sentences in French, but when spoken politely, have found the French people
to be very warm and kind.
The words are.
Excuse me, :: excusez-moi
I do not speak French. :: Je ne parle pas français
Do you speak English? :: Parlez-vous anglais ?

I wouldn't call it racist, but I wouldn't expect it to happen either. Making English our official language and using it for all government documents is one thing, but asking immigrants not to speak their native language in public is going a bit far.

read the post and show me where I said national. No where. Pt

The power? You mean the government? Well they are supposed to work for us. It is supposed to matter. The point remains that something has to be done about illegal immigration.

You can take the Libyan approach and use artillery and snipers. Establish a no-mans land and when an illegal immigrant enters it fire away. If it works for the Libya why can't it work for America?

Exaggerate much? Not surprising that's the best you can do.

Us covers more than just you and me. However, we've allowed money to b free speech, and money likes it this way. We'd have to stop thinking in terms of parties, stop worrying about meaningless issues like language, and exercise or power to vote people out f office regardless of party. There is just not enough push to really do something.

Oh, it's building. Just wait until there are even less jobs and people are more and more desperate for work. I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of people who are sick and tired of both parties too, and it's only a matter of time.

Well that's hope. Then we'll work for low wages and no benefits. A friend of mine calls it the mexicanization of America.
