Is it racist to ask for immigrants to speak English?

Is it racist to ask immigrants to speak English?

Another pointless bait poll.

You could really say that about any of them if you wanted. I don't really see how this is any different than any of the other ones. It's asking an opinion on a subject.

I think of it more like a reset. Amnesty is not citizenship, it just makes it easier for you to seek legal status if we actually create more opportunities to be here legally and temporarily--maybe with some sort of seniority system for the Visa's. Send every illegal immigrant home, and citizens still aren't going to be willing to pluck chickens and pick cucumbers or pick up and move all around with the field work or construction jobs. It is just a cultural reality that we benefit greatly from the work they are performing.

I think that's bull crap.

I think that's bull crap.

If people are paid a living wage, they will do the work. Don't try to feed me that line of bull crap. The reason WHY illegals do this type of work is because they are virtually SLAVES.

History is irrevelant here. I'm sure you know that our population has grown exponentially since the 1950s.

http://aging.senate.gov/crs/aging4.pdf

The U.S. population has experienced remarkable growth since 1950. From a base of about 152
million Americans in 1950, an additional 155 million persons were added to the population
between 1950 and 2009, with the number of additional women slightly outnumbering additional
men (see Figure 1). This increase (of about 105%) in the size of the U.S. population was
remarkable compared with other industrialized countries. Germany and Italy, for instance, grew
by only 21% and 30% respectively during the same period.6 And, a number of countries, most
notably in Eastern Europe, have recently experienced absolute reductions in the size of their
populations.7

Again, doesn't matter. Even today immigrants still come here, as they always have, no speaking the language. I work with them everyday, from all parts of the world.

Focus on the part about the population growth since the 1950s, and that proves that we can no longer afford to be so flippant about who and how many we allow in.

It was an invitation for the knuckle draggers to come out from under their rocks.

But I'm not suggesting it be censored, just throwing in my opinion that it's a floater.

I think that's bull crap.

Feel free, but a friend of mine who worked for one of the chicken processors said it was almost impossible to get natural born Americans to work there. I cannot recall if she worked for Purdue or Tyson.

Is it inherently racist? No. I can imagine an ignorant country bumpkin saying that this is 'merica blah blah blah, and really simply mean it.

However. People who should know better (be able to think it through) choose not to. I suspect that they fail to do so often for racist reasons.

I doubt that very much, especially in today's economy.

My entire goal was to generate conversation and gather opinions, and I've done just that.

But still, your opinion has been noted, and I can understand your point.

It's funny how those on the far left always complain about the huge and greedy corporations, but yet they don't make too much of a stink about them hiring illegal immigrants and saving a bundle in employee wages and benefits. Maybe if we cracked down (and I mean REALLY cracked down) on illegal immigration, some of these companies would be forced to hire American citizens and pay them a living wage.

We have enough poor people now, and I'm sure a lot of those people would take a job at a Tyson plant or any other place in order to make ends meet. We do not have an infinite amount of jobs to give or enough people working and making money to provide benefits to more and more people.

Maybe you could have used bigoted instead of racist, because racist just doesn't make sense.

I swear, it keeps getting dumber and dumber.

Flippant? Certainly language isn't the major issue concerning immigration.

Yes, that's a word that could have been used instead.

I made this post with haste, not looking for any better way of wording it. My mind was set on my family's discussion earlier this evening about Indians and the such, and so I didn't really take time to focus on the other languages that come in to our conversation. You could say that I had a one track mindset coming into posting this.

Add something intelligent then.

The whole purpose of this poll was to give certain types a soapbox to complain about illegal mexicans. Adding something intelligent would need to include a hook.

Why shouldn't we complain about any illegal immigrants? Why not? It does not make one a racist or a bigot because they don't want illegal immigration. That's assinine.

Of course not, that was a general comment.

Then why is anyone concerned about the language issue? Wouldn't it be better to spend time on the relevant issues?

Thanks for admitting what I implied.

What are the relevant issues?

Language is a small issue among many other issues. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be discussed though. It's still an issue.
