Is it racist to ask for immigrants to speak English?

But that's a different situation. It doesn't change anything I said. Immigrants knowing basic English skills helps them and us. :)

Impractical to try and control more than we do. It s a general rule, but there are reasons it doesn't happen.

And really, the hardship is more theirs than ours. Outside or some mild annoyance, it's no big deal for us.

I just gave you one. We also have rules for accepting Cubans. That's another.

You're hilarious! You didn't give me one, other than wartime situation, no you didn't.

There are wars and situations all over the world. It is one way they get here not speaking English, and in some numbers. All sorts of refugees. Like from Cuba for example. So, you do have a couple.

Like I said before, those are "special" circumstances and not the norm.

All them are special. That's the point. There is already a requirement to speak English, but we have special exceptions and this adds up to a good many.

How can you ever be truly american without speaking the language...European immigrants if they couldnt learn english themselves they INSISTED and made thier children learn english...so they were not greenhorns

I think we probably also make a LOT of exceptions where there really isn't a necessity to do so.

Wouldn't know. But there is a bit of subjectivity to anything like this. However, it will happen. No real way around it.

There is always a way.

Yep. Just like those who says its a terrible problem. Just a more reasonable opinion than there's.

LOL! My opinion is that just because it isn't necessarily a "terrible" problem, does not mean that it isn't a problem.

For us, it really isn't. Never has been. Their children learn and fully adapt. The struggle is largely theirs.

Now, you know that is not always the case. There are PLENTY of children of immigrants who cannot (or least accurately) speak English. AND, encouraging them to learn some basic English would be so much more helpful for them than coming to a country and not knowing the language. They (or you) may not realize that, but that is a fact. They wouldn't be taken advantage of as easily as well.

Learning second language young is easy. Most do. And we already know they haven't come here knowing, we have a country full of immigrants who learned and adapted.

That might be true, but that does not negate the fact that they would be better off if they knew some basic English first. And BTW, that is not an opinion. That is a fact.

And largely, if it were doable based on their situation, they likely would. BTW, that is not as much a fact as you think. Better as a word and thought has some subjectivity to it.

TIS a fact. Just because you don't like it doesn't make any less so.

I didn't say I did or didn't "like" it. Better is measured against something. The standard is often subjective.

Now you're just trying to be coy. Yes, better - It is BETTER that immigrants know English as opposed to NOT KNOWING English. ;)
