Well insurance is a contract, I pay so much and in return get so much coverage. If the company wants to change it I can go elsewhere but when it comes time to collect they must pay according to the terms under which I paid.

Private insurance is contractual.

And your justification for allowing the government to do it?

Can't afford the current system of raising benefits based on wages, unless you want to raise taxes.

me>> You can do whatever you freely choose to do with them, give them half your wealth for a start.

Sorry but that's just an excuse. You get others to do by setting examples.

I give to charities. But that won't solve the problem.

Some people have the ability to put empathy for others and the national good at the same level as their own personal self-interest.

Spoken like a true modern day Republican.

Wow, what would you do with the millions of starving old people that would litter the streets?
I can see blaming them for having no savings to an extent.

But what would you do with them?

I have several friends that get disability and social security.
And its all they have.
The overwhelming majority of Americans live pay check to pay check and barely make it while having zero savings.
If you want to take away the only thing they will have, what do you plan to do with them?
You cant be in favor of taking away their support without offering some solution in exchange.

I think that every person in favor of removing SS without having a replacement in mind, should have to move 10 elderly people into their personal home to live with them :)

Ahh...this is a young persons poll.

Clearly those of us who have payed into our SS accounts deserve to have our monies. No? And the very idea that some of you wish to dissolve this fund seems rather...heartless and your flippant opines and lack of concern for the older generations is quite disheartening.

I sure wish there was a "give you the finger" smilie right now...

Get rid of welfare and instead of having 20-30 million people living in poverty we'll have 70-80 million. More. What then? Get jobs? The huge employee bank will allow employers to hire Americans at the same wages they do Mexicans. I'd be happy with that. People who pick lettuce for a living shouldn't make more then $9/h.

it seems to me that the best way to deal with this is to say that everyone over 45 will continue to be eligable for SS benifits, but no one else will be. everyone will continue paying taxes into it until all those 45 year olds die. something to that effect at least. I'm not sure what the demographic projections say about how that would be funded.

I agree that it should not be changed for thoses over 45 who have worked and paid taxes into the system, however, I don't think that those who are yonger should have to pay into it. Let them or should I say force them to invest for retirement as they wish. The government will just have to suffer a little while until all those who are over 45 die.

I'm 44. Why do you want me to lose my social security? I paid into the system exactly one year less than my 45 year old counterpart.

You wont see a Dime anyway....so whats the loss?

Sure wish this poll was age specific. Then we could all see the age of the person(s) voting to dissolve SS. I would venture a guess the majority for it are younger and the majority against it are older.

Fatalistic comment...sad to see such comments concerning the monies of others.

Uh...I'm 41...it applies to me as well as you. The likely hood of Social Security surviving 20 yrs is very slim. Had we acted ten yrs ago....or even five it could have had a chance, but as it is there are very few fixes under the current economic climate when combined with the growing influx of recipients. The system is crippled as it is, and the baby boomers are just now entering the pool.
Combine these issues with the borrowing Bush has done against the fund, and the deposits we all make every year, and its so far in the red it must collapse.

No I disagree. SS is not insolvent nor beyond the point of no-return. But if all American's take the attitude that SS can't be saved then the govt will insure it becomes unsalvageable.

You might see a dime but not much more.

Most people just do not understand what is going to happen when the baby-boomer retirements hit full force unless their benefits are drastically cut. Why should young people have to face confiscatory tax rates to pay for old farts who spent like drunken sailors when they were in the work force.

I've been hearing the same song, "Social Security is about to collapse" for over 30 years.

Social Security will never collapse. To even allow it to collapse would be equivalent to mass murder with all the misery and death it would cause to place so many countless millions into the street.

The day we turn our backs on our elderly is the day humanity no longer deserves to continue as a species.

Do you know how to add?

Do you know how to add?

Sure. And you will have a good chance to learn too if we cancel SS.
Because you would be able to walk around counting the corpses littering our streets of the abandoned elderly that die by the millions.

Do you have some special data source to back this up or did you come to this conclusion using woman's intuition?

How about a small amount of common sense instead.

Do you disagree that the majority of Americans live pay check to pay check?
Do you disagree that the majority of Americans have debt instead of savings?

What would all the millions of disabled and elderly do if they did not get their check?
Some would find their way to homeless shelters. Some would be able to live with their children.

I tell you what... you tell me what they will do.

And why do you insinuate that i am female or homosexual?
I am neither.
Is caring about the elderly a female trait to you?

I know about 150-200 people on Social Security. At least 100 of them would be on the street within 2 months. Several shack up with someone and just hand over their check.

If a person is not capable of working and is approaching a time in their life where soon they wont be able to take care of themselves, what would they do? Where do they live? How do they eat?
Once they can no longer take care of themselves, even retirement homes would not take them without that check.

I can not imagine what your answer might be.
Saying they should of been rich people and its their own fault, is simply not a solution.

Hell No.

YOu talk like man with no brains. I paid Social security all my working life.
Estimates are now that if they took all the money I paid in to Social Security from my checks and the interest earned from my deductions, I will get back 70% of that money if i live to be 80 years old. Medicare and Social Security are not socialism. I paid for it and it is mine, as did all who get Social Security and Medicare. It is the same thing as paying for private medical insurance or retirement.

Are you interested in Paying your medical insurance premiums monthly and not getting medical insurance? This is exactly the type of question that your pole is asking.

Right wing radicals spend to much time on BS trying to figure out how to screw the American People. I understand that you are ready to anything to destablize USA, and get the rich, Richer.

Is a special data source needed?
i was actually hoping to see some proof that SS will never fail
it is unsustainable as it is
current work pool paying for retired pool is fine until baby boom retires, and work pool declines
they monies given in over ones lifetime is spent the year they gave it, not saved for your retirement years
its pass the buck ponzi bullshit
and it must be fixed or scrapped
