When the American Revolution started, the reason why they began revolting was because they wanted to exercise their rights as Englishmen. That is, they wanted to have a say in the government process of Parliament, by either having some seats allocated to them or by having their own American Parliament in which the British monarch remains head of state.
But a radical faction of American colonists agitated for complete revolution, not just restoration of rights and privileges. And this faction eventually won out as hostilities increased.
