Nixon was also bat**** crazy. Anyone who disagrees can feel free to listen to the wiretap recordings.

Nixon never got over having the 60 election perhaps stolen from him and that accentuated his feelings of paranoia to the point he was worried about McGovern winning even though everyone knew it was going to be a massive blowout for Nixon-especially after his first running mate pulled out

It depends on how the Tea Partiers do, and if Boehner grows a pair of balls to stand up to them. The leadership knows that it's a political liability, but we don't impeach people for bad judgement.

Tell that to Bill Clinton.

I have to agree with others that this SHOULD be a much bigger scandal but probably won't be. Tells me a lot about just how bad the partisanship is in this country. People ARE dead because of this incident.

It is pretty simple. The House issues the Articles of Impeachment upon simple majority vote and the POTUS has a trial in the Senate with House proponents as the Prosecutors, the Chief Justice as the Judge, and the Senate as the jury which requires a 3/4 majority to remove from office. They can do it for any reason they want. There is no judicial appeal from an impeachment hearing--no Court has the jurisdiction to hear it. When it is done, it is done.

that is correct. And should Obama be re-elected next week, and the Republicans retain control of the House, I strongly in the most emphatic terms possible would urge them to go ahead and impeach President Obama without a crime to charge him with. I would absolutely LOVE to see that happen.

The man was still mentally unfit for the office of the Presidency, just look how it turned out. A normal person gets stabbed in the back, they learn a lesson and adapt. For Nixon, it only made his condition worse.

Christ, CP, I just Googled that. I hadn't heard that. What horrible images for his friends and family. Just awful. I now completely agree that the President should have cancelled his campaigning for a few days. Yuck.

I don't have much use for him but recognizing Red China might have been the single most brilliant FP coupe in my lifetime (born in 59)

there were reports he was raped before being killed

I would agree with that. Its too bad Nixon allowed his demons to overrule some of his better angels. When John Dean filled him in on the role that some of his key people in the White House played in the scandal, he should have picked up the phone, called the FBI and the whole thing would have never touched him and he would go down as a President who picked duty and honor above petty politics and personal friends.

Sadly, he did not and the rest as they say is history.

What would you do, vote the democratic party line that you already vote to show them what's what? Every an Administration official is sent to testify in contradiction to facts that are known by the President knowing their testimony will be false, the Administration is subordinating perjury. There is your crime.

Tell that to Bill Clinton.

Clinton was impeached for bad judgement outside the realm of his office. I think there's a difference here. Essentially, Obama made a bad call in the context of his duties.

Article I Section 6 of the Constitution exempts Congresspeople from being arrested or charged for actions within the scope of their official duties. You could argue that this doesn't technically apply to the President, but it would be hard to get him convicted on it also.

If the Republicans controlled the House and they voted to impeach President Obama without a crime to charge him with as some here suggest, it would not change, alter, effect nor impact my thinking about them in the slightest. That would not be humanly possible.

As I said, I would absolutely LOVE if they did this. Even under some trumped up charge to satisfy the Constitutional language - please please please do it.

anyone who would want Biden as president is really batcrap crazy That was the smartest thing Obama did, making sure even those of us who despise him would not want him out of office short of the election

I'm not real familiar with the law regarding impeachment, but just out of curiosity would that be considered actually "charging" him? When I think about Bill Clinton, what he did might have been a little bit sleazy, but where was the crime part?

I wouldn't want to charge the president with a crime, but if he lied to the American people and was involved in a cover-up of some sort, I would hope that impeachment would be an option.

That's true. I hadn't really thought that far ahead yet.

Deaths are irrelevant when it comes to the OP question. INTENT is. There is no intent in Benghazi. These two things aren't even in the same league. Watergate is to Major League Baseball as Benghazi is to Little League.

what was Nixon's intent when the watergate break in was executed?

Tell that to Bill Clinton.

Yeah, the impeachment of Bill Clinton was the most idiotic piece of partisan hackery that has ever occurred in this country's history.

I would say the actions of the Special Prosecutor releasing the indictments of various GHWB/Reagan officials a couple days before the 92 election might have been even worse

Good question. We don't know conclusively how much he was involved at the outset. But we do know he tried to cover up ILLEGAL activity enacted by his subordinates to assist him in his re-election campaign. The situation with Benghazi has zero in common with that.

partial agreement-there may be some coverup of stuff that has not been disclosed in the murders so far

Really. Tell me more about how the federal level response to Hurricane Katrina was never considered a scandal worthy of note.

There is no intent in Benghazi.

sure there was. there was the intent to protect the President in the middle of an election season from something that might harm his campaign.

I don't like being lied to by any politician, but especially a sitting president. It really pisses me off. If he made a mistake, then he should own up to it! And to think, that this is all about votes really disgusts me. I can see why it would be important, but that doesn't make it ANY less disgusting IMO. People are dead, and I would respect honesty a LOT more.
