Is America obsessed with pop culture--music, movies, fashion, celebrities, and the like?

I dunno. I find it pretty easy to tune it out if you're not into it. I don't really see why it's a problem though...some people are into celebrity gossip, just as others are into travel or sports or Dungeons & Dragons. To each his own.

Yes. It's used as distractions to keep our minds at ease and keep us from forcing our government to do what needs to be done; to make sure corporations have us by the balls, and not care that this government has been ran by banks and corporate interest for at least 30 years if not longer. However, I don't think it really got bad until more people were voting for a ****ty pop singer than who would run the country.

I think some Americans may be obsessed with some of these things, but I don't see it as an American 'thing'.

Then the tv is doing its job.

lol... I have not a lot of free time to watch TV. Between working 60-70 hours a week and taking care of a household, my free time is spent online. Either way, I could care less about all things 'pop culture'.

Ok but how many times in a day do you think your brain is bombarded with advertisements? How many things in everyday life do you use the name brand name rather than the general products name? Think of it like this, the reason a lot of these Western Europe, middle eastern, and Latin countries have revolts and huge governmental changes is their brains aren't constantly being destroyed by corporate branding and made to think crap like lost and American idol are important. How many people at your work a year ago could tell you what snooki was up to? What about name at least 3 GOP candidates? Better yet tell you our vps name? The more sedated our minds, the more power government, corporations, and media have over us.

I agree but as I said in my first post, I'm sure that applies to some Americans. I personally am hit with maybe an hour or two at the most of advertisements - whether that is on television or radio. I work a hella lot of hours.

I would say this may be more of an epidemic among the younger people - meaning, people aged 23 and under? I supervise several people around that age and they are bombarded with the kinds of things you are talking about. I don't think however, that we should jump on the 'people can't think for themselves and government is brainwashing us all because of it" bandwagon.

Depends on the person. I'd say it goes 50-50

Bread & circuses = (food stamps + subsidized food) & TV

Yeah, and I think it's a serious problem, mainly due to how relentlessly we harass celebrities.

Seriously, we pay people to stalk these people everywhere, shove cameras in their face, ask them what they're doing with their hoo-ha, and it's completely legal, and we wonder why they go off the deep end so often? Gee, I wonder.

It's sick and sociopathic. As a society, we're totally detached from the notion that celebrities are people.

I think that pop culture is obsessed with pop culture. To the rest of us it’s just entertainment.
