I'm old so there's a limit on how healthy I can be. I have arthritis but other than that, I'm plugging along. I can walk miles each day, and do, but I wouldn't want to have to dig ditches for a living again.

On the other hand, I'm not a hypochondriac like many old people. I sat and listened to a woman who when greeted with, "How are you?" would proceed to tell each inquirer how she was. Finally, I said, "Have you considered just printing it up and handing it out?"

The last physical I had was about 20 years ago and I was fine. On the other hand, when I was 10 the doctor gave me six weeks to live. I'll go out on a limb and say he was wrong.

Lol, really? :eek::lamo

Oops, I voted before I read your OP.

I guess then no, I'm not.

1. The wife refused to work on marriage problems, refused to seek help for her own personal problems, committed adultery and left the marriage. So much for getting to be a husband.

2. My X kidnapped the children, I haven't barely seen them in years, and now it looks like she's going to get away with it and live in another state, so I won't be seeing them while they grow up, either. So much for being a dad.

3. A couple of my best buds decided to use a loaded assault rife as the object of a practical joke on me. I flipped **** and got them in trouble. No more best buds.

I've lost pretty much everything I know and love. No, I'm not doing very well at all. I've been back in country for only a week and I'm already falling back into the 'old normal' of excessive video games and mood-food just to numb the pain. I want a way to express and vent my aggression but everywhere I turn I have to treat people like glass. In Afghanistan I would save it all up for convoy where I could then drive very aggressively, forcing people off the road and, in a couple instances, psychically push them out of my way with my truck. I would see some guys looking suspicious and beg them to do something stupid so I could open up with my machine gun.

Strangely enough, because I could vent, I feel I was fairly well adjusted overseas.

Now I have to color between the lines again, and I will, but that means the anger has no where to go...

You sound like a man in need of a heavy bag.

I could stand to lose 10 lb. and I could do that by cutting down my beer ration. I enjoy weight training, free and machine. Running bores the hell out of me, though for some reason I don't mind the tread mill at the gym. Hiking trails and mountains are fun. We'll do more of that now that the weather is tolerable, as we do every "fall" and "winter".

Stress really is a nasty, nasty thing. I consciously work to avoid as much of it as I can. That includes avoiding stress carriers, drama mamas, toxic bastards and stressful situations I can avoid. You're going to have some stressful people and situations you cannot avoid, but I work at keeping them to a minimum. Meditation has greatly helped me to handle the stress I cannot avoid.

I have elevated cholesterol. The Doc put me on Zocor. I tried for a week. I can't stand drugs. I take maybe 2 aspirins a year. Blood pressure is good. Other emergency retinal surgery for a retinal tare I've never had any surgery. I did have Melanoma, stage two dug out of my right arm, but that's really it. Non-disease related, I have bi-lateral hearing loss since Vietnam.

Years ago I smoked, until I hated it. I wanted every cigarette to taste like the first one. They never did. I still smoke cigars from time to time, but I don't inhale.

Overall: good health. I'm just fortunate as I can't take credit for most of it.

Attributes:

Good woman. Most important. She keeps me real.

Good dogs. Very important. They are non-judgemental and essential to good mental and physical health. Their love, like my wife's is unconditional. You can have too many wives, but you can't have too many dogs. Dogs never complain about your driving habits or your farting in bed.

Living where the life suits me. I'm happy where I live. Yeah, I'd love to live in France, Boulder, Vancouver, New Orleans, Athens, Ga., Portland, Seattle, Missoula, Banff, Ireland, UK, Puerto Vallarta, San Filipe, Montevideo or Tucson, Sante Fe or Austin. But, you can't live everywhere. I love where I am.

Lifestyle.

Laughing to me is very important. I never miss the chance, especially when I'm laughing at myself, which seems to be more and more these days. I even laugh when I am alone sometimes. Why not?

I haven't owned a suit or a tie except for once in 20 years. (I had to go to traffic court in Ajo for criminal speeding when coming back from Mexico after a long weekend. Criminal speeding in Arizona is 20 miles over the speed limit. Good cop, great judge, traffic school and I have kept my word to the judge in Ajo to never speed in his town again. Also, at his request I've stopped in Ajo on occasion and spent time in the town and have had the pleasure of meeting some of the people there. I'm a better man for it.)

I don't hate anyone, or anything, to my knowledge.

Limited television viewing. Sports, an occasional movie and an occasional British comedy. I do not watch network television. I do not watch television "news". Not watching television is a great stress reliever.

Vitamins and herbs. I take vitamins, herbal supplements, Krill oil, probiotics and resveratrol.

Music. I listen to good music as often as possible, especially at work when i don't have to talk to people.

Travel. The world is full of wonderful people. Most of the people in the world are friendly and kind, even when you can't share a common language. Travel has helped me love the world and life in general.

More than anything I'm a lucky sumbitch. I have no idea why. Neither does anyone else, i might add.

I was severely overweight and unhealthy in my early 20's. I weighed over 300 lbs and binge drank a lot. Most of it came from blowing out my knee in HS football and subsequently being immobile, and depressed for a long time about that and other things. I was able to turn my life around at about 24, got a little therapy to help with the depression, lost 100 lbs with healthy eating and exercise, and quit drinking hard alcohol.

Today, at 31, I am in very good shape. I'm 6'2" and about 210 lbs with a lot of muscle. I'm lucky to have a job where physical fitness is a requirement, and part of my duties are lifting and doing cardio every day, in addition to a lot of very rigorous physical training. I run 5 miles every other day. I do sometimes allow myself to eat junkfood, but I am still very meticulous about my calorie intake, as well as regulating my intake of protein and carbs. I take a lot of vitamins. I have to basically force-feed myself vegetables like a little boy, but I do it every day. I am required to undergo regular checkups and physicals, and the results are always pretty immaculate.

All that said, I do still have a couple of vices. I am a light smoker (about a pack a week), and I do drink beer in excess from time to time.

A lot of men in my profession own side businesses, or have second jobs because we have so many days off. Sometimes I think about maybe getting certified as a personal trainer, and doing a little of that on the side. The effect that getting healthy had on me, mentally and physically, was overwhelming. It's just unbelievable how much it improves literally everything, from your physical well being, to your mental well being, to your entire outlook on yourself and life in general, to your disposition towards others. I think it would be very fulfilling to help other people who are struggling with improving or maintaining their health. And knowing what it's like to be in their shoes, I think I'd be pretty good at it.

You sound in in good health imho from across the aether if you are walking mikes each day.

That is completely awesome!

Mind, body and soul it seems you have it going on ... your positive energy comes across the aether.

I think I know what you do for a living yet of course I will say.
Heh, well I didn't mean to be cryptic or secretive about it. I just don't want to be one of those dudes who try to work it into every conversation, and never leave the house without a T-shirt that lets everybody know. We're all proud of what we do, but some guys act really braggy and douchey about it. Anyway, I'm a Firefighter.

And thanks!

Do you think you are in good health ... if so why? If not why?

WHO

Funny...but wellness or wallet or anything of the sort has never made me curious... may be I should be more curious that way!

Last time I was at the doctor (a few months ago), I had a checkup and some blood work (blood sugar, thyroid, cholesterol, etc.), and everything came out normal, so I guess I'm in pretty good health! I also TRY to exercise every day and make home-cooked meals, so I think that helps out a lot too. The sodium content in some boxed foods (like stuffing or rice meals) is outrageous, so I just make my own. I think that is the much healthier way to go, and you control the salt and fat content.

I knew it! Everyone loves firefighters!

Okay ... I live in a state where firefighters have the utmost respect!

Thank you for your service!

I am very moved by some of the posts to this thread. I think we should ask one another for help more often, as well all have some expertise in something.

So in that vein, here's my question:

How can I eat more fresh fruits and veggies without going grocery every day? I live alone (ya me!) and I can never finish a head of lettuce in time, etc.

Suggestions?

I voted yes. At age 41 I still do all of the activities I did at 18. Bicycling, Hiking, Skateboarding, Motocross, Race cars, Canoeing Paintaball, Airsoft. I still weigh the same 150lbs at 5ft 9 in tall. I am one of those lucky bastards that can not put on weight. I have tried many times and I just can not keep it on. I got up to 187 in the Corps due to the highly physical labor and high protein meals, but lost it within a couple months of being home. I eat right, with plenty of veggies and fruit and never in excess. I have a few vices in my diet which include Beer and Whiskey in moderation as well as Jerky once in a while. I stay very active and drive my wife nuts with it sometimes. I like for her to go everywhere I go and do most of the activities I do, but she is slowing down some. Not a lot but some. I guess I am trying to keep both of us fit and feeling young. I don't smoke but I do chew tobacco which is no better at all. That is something I would like to quit. My job is stressful and I work very long hours, but I am able to shut it off when I am not working. I believe that is the key to staying sane.

Mentally I am in a very good place. Just celebrated 19 years of marriage to the woman I have known since 1976. I chalk my good mental status up to this. Security is a big issue with me and she has been my rock forever. I know she feels the same with me. Our daughter is graduating HS this year and we feel we did great with her, although I feel she would have been successful anyway. Knowing everything is cool right now has kept me sharp.

Only real issues I have physically is a little arthritis in the bones and I haven't felt my left foot since 1998. Other than that I feel great and hope that continues.

Gardening. IF you have the time, the space, and the energy, you can get a lot of good food. If you like brussels and have good, loamy soil, grow about 50 'Early King' brussels sprouts in little seed-starting containers. When they're health enough, plant them in your garden, spaced accordingly. Right each each of my 40 brussels have about 60 decent-sized sprouts on 'em and they haven't even been fed/watered a lot. (They're very thirsty/hungry brassicas.)

Oh, and CARROTS! 'Chantenay' carrots grow well in any soil, including clay. Sumpy and sweet. Can stay in the ground through the winter. You can harvest them in the winter, too. You can buy a pack for $0.20 at Wal-Mart (Livingston Seed Co. brand). SO worth it. Each teeny little seed will provide one bulky, sweet, and crunchy carrot.

FINALLY, 'Mary Washington' asparagus. I busted my hump this spring digging a deep/wide trench for 64 2-year-old asparagus crowns. 20-year lifespan, 1/2 pound of food per crown.

I'm sure I'm healthy enough for the Death Panels to write me off. My joints are getting wonky from arthritis, my feet hurt--but not when I walk--and I have some other problems. I have emphysema and prostate problems. Skin cancer goes with the age. My biggest health problem is President Obama.

Sadly, the only thing more boring than you hearing about my health problems is my hearing about yours.

Another loss to the greeting card industry.

LOL.

I am one of those lucky bastards that can not put on weight. I have tried many times and I just can not keep it on.
Oh man, lucky bastards is right. I always hated you guys (not really, but you know what I mean) who could eat whatever you want and never gain an ounce. I had a roommate in college like that, with the metabolism of a freakin hummingbird. Dude would come home twice a day with like a big bag of Jack in the Box and scarf the whole thing down and then go take a dump ten minutes later. Meanwhile if I even walk past a fast food joint and smell it, my ass jiggles for like a week.

It wouldn't have been so bad if he didn't complain about it constantly. I'd be sitting there eating a cup of brown rice with half a chicken breast and a mountain of broccoli, watching this asshole put away sleeves of Chips Ahoy cookies like a wood chipper and listening to him whine about how he just can't help being skinny forever. Awww, poor guy. Hey, maybe it'll help if I slam your head on the coffee table a couple times

But uhh... I'm not bitter smiley-face-whistle-2.gif

I voted yes.
Being in the 60's age range. I am well within my height/weight/body mass. I walk 2 to 3 miles a day.

Unlike some, I pretty much eat what I want. Have always been a meat and potato type of person. The thing I always remember is if you burn more calories than you take in, you are not going to get fat. And yes, I do drink juice, and eat veggies. I just don't buy into the no fried food, etc, thing.

I feel your pain man. I have a buddy who struggles with his weight. I don't really eat bad foods though. I try to eat healthy especially since I am getting older.

WHO

This is a really great and pertinent thread to our modern lifestyles, an absolutely excellent OP idea.

Yes, I am in a good skinny shape although I heard that some people call me too skinny. So I am an absolute oddball amongst Americans.

Why?

Because I can do one thing that absolutely no American is capable of doing, and that is to derive happiness out of hunger. I can and could eat whatever I want, but I am simply happier if I stay a little hungry after every meal. I don't diet, I am not particularly active in anything, I just ask my body a basic question: "what about me?". And then my body compromizes with leaving a little hunger for me instead of demanding that I finish my plate.

Also, the foods I like the most are the ones everyone is programmed to hate, especially the veggies.

You nailed it. I am the same way. I would rather eat a big bowl of steamed broccoli than a piece of apple pie. And I always leave the table a little hungry. Good observation!
