Online voter registration

We'll I've moved a lot, but not very far in the last few years. I've always went to my own elementary school to vote (since it's only once every two years anyways). The drive is like maybe around half an hour and I'm thinking about registering to vote near my house. But in order to do it I have mail the state (VA) a form, and lets just say I live on the internet and don't exactly send many paper mails. It is the 21st century.

So my questions is should you be able to register to vote online? Obvious drawback is it would increase voter fraud, but you still need stuff like SSN and your IP can be checked, also you still need to show up to vote on election day.

The potential for hacking and voter fruad is enormous. If some loon can break into NORAD"S systems what makes you think anything is secure on a computer.

I am not a computer person by any stretch of the imagination, but there must be a way to vote using an electronic means of sometype where once the votes are recorded at the polls on a disk the disk "locks" itself and "cannot"? be tampered with. these disks area locked in a sealed chamber of some type which only can be openned by optical identification of some type.

I realize that a disk cannot hold an infinite number os votes but surely this is not an insurmountable problem. This may all be fanciful thinking but theres got to be a better way than punch cards. Purely 20th century.

Unless you are bed ridden there is no valid reason what so ever why you can't register to vote in person at a designated election office. And I feel the same way about voting.

What do you mean? You can register on site at the elementary schools? I mean I can do it, but I'm just paranoid about sending physical mails cause it's almost like I've never done it in my life if you guys know what I mean.

Of course. No reason not to allow it. Is it easier to lie on an internet form than a paper one somehow?

In fact, now that I think about it I DID register online this year. And I'm doing a mail in ballot. I'll never have to interact with another person during this whole process. Fancy that!

Things get lost in the mail. If mail is allowed, online should be allowed.

I say yes. I updated my voter registration online. My state required a passport or driver license number as proof it was me. My personal information popped up on screen once I entered my ID and I was able to make any changes that were needed.

I moved last year and I updated my address with the BMV. The BMV asked if I would like to update my voter registration information and I said sure. I never received a card in the mail. I was very pissed to see my old address was on file and not updated. I was not registered to vote. I am glad I decided to double-check, or I would have been livid at the polls.

of course you should be able to register to vote on line :shrug:

theres no logical and rational reality based reason not to be able too.

I also feel the same way about obtaining an ID if its needed, you should be able to do it many places and ways including by mail and on line

Yes, you should absolutely be able to register to vote online. I'm in favor of being able to do most mundane tasks relating to government online, since a lot of the government offices are not open hours that are convenient for people who work normal office hours. Things are slowly moving that direction, so hopefully we'll eventually be able to register online.

Until such time as it is possible to fully ID a person sitting at the keyboard then no.

More than 11.6 million adults became a victim of identity fraud in the United States. No way in hell am I putting my personal info onto a computer. Remember what they say about the net...once something is on it, it STAYS on it. And no matter what type of security software you have it can still be either gotten around or hacked into. As I like to say....what one man builds, another can tear down.

As for those that think voting should be done online also....You're just flat out crazy.

I dont understand the fear of hacking in this situation at all. It seems like conspiracy theory stuff to me in person voting fraud, its nonsense.

Can some one take me through a realistic example of being able to register online would cause more harm than good?


Im just not seeing the fear and think its totally unrealistic.
