Often times I find some things I actually like about the other candidate. There's always the urge to just dismiss it as it's usually trivial but half the time I give credit where credit is due.

I certainly do though I don’t think I have done it much with Romney. I think the things that Romney and I agree on are such universal things that few people would disagree, such as minorities should have the right to vote. I assume he believes that. ;) I am sure there is some substantive stuff I agree with Romney on that I just can’t think of at the moment. I agreed with Bush on immigration for the most part. I agree with Ron Paul on just about everything related to foreign policy.

I also have no problem disagreeing with my candidate. I disagree with Obama on many things which is why I am voting Green party. But even with them I disagree on gun control.

I had to select "other" in your poll because I've only complimented Obama for one thing: He followed the procedures established by Bush to implement our departure from Iraq.

Everything else he's done during his Presidency has been either useless or bad.

I complimented Obama once. First President to have a brewery.

I only compliment people when they finish their job properly. I don't do compliments for half-ass efforts, failure or cute phrases spoken to those who would still buy into all that s**t.

Yes.

There is no percentage, I don't keep track. If they do something well, I laud it.

I would have to vote 0%, because I think it ought to be well-established by now that politicians are all lying, conniving, sociopathic, heartless, soulless sycophants to corporate and other interests. So I tend not to compliment any of them.

They're all the "other candidate" to me. that said, I give credit where credit is due whether it's good, or bad.

Define "the other candidate"? I am neither a dem nor a Rep. I do not support one candidate or the the other. Sure, I will vote for Romney, but that is not actually support. But from my outside view, that is because Obama is a failure, supports policies I do not like and has acted in an unconstitutional way, not because I like, support or even believe in Romney. I am not a Libertarian, so I don't really support their candidate. Other than that, what little I know about the other "independents" are that they are mostly supporters of even greater measures from the left or right in one specialized area or another.

There are no candidates supporting an agenda with my beliefs. The right has more than the left in some cases, but then, most of the left are, imo, socialists. A philosophy that I find offensive, contrary to natural order and a great evil that is the enemy of mankind. I actually support quite a few ideas and goals of the left, however, their current trend of using socialism, or a derivative there of, to meet those goals means that I cannot, in anyway, support them. The ends do not justify the means, and if you use the wrong means, you don't get the ends that you desire.

In my mind, you do not ever Compliment OR Denegrate the opposiing Political Candidate. It is my opinion that a campaign should be all about who YOU are, what YOU believe, what YOU think should be done, and how YOU will work to get it done. The minute that you start talking to me about your opponent is the minute that I start wondering what it is you're trying to hide from me, or to keep me from knowing about YOU.

To be fair, liberals aren't socialists. They exploit feminism and multiculturalism in order to expand the labor supply and drive down wages.

It's been this way since the progressive era if not earlier with the pursuits of first wave feminism and the melting pot.

On another note, consequentialism has been practiced by conservatives for quite sometime, and many conservatives have been switching sides as Rockefeller Republicans and Reagan Democrats because of how they're simpleminded.

Liberals view themselves as merely giving conservatives their just deserts. In reality, the only conservatives left standing are those who stand on principle while the bullies are switching sides for the sake of convenience.

there are more than 2 candidates... there is more to the election than " my candidate" and the "other candidate"

there are 25 Presidential candidates... so which one is considered "the other candidate"?

41-50%

and I actually spend a lot of time defending Romney. People attack him for all the wrong reasons (being rich, Bain Capital, etc.) There are plenty of good reasons to vote against Romney without resorting to stuff that shouldn't even matter.

I criticize Obama all the time, though recently I decided that I'm voting for Gary Johnson instead. Gary Johnson definitely has some views I disagree with (like healthcare) but I'm voting for him in protest over the War in Afghanistan. Any US president that continues a pointless war just to look good for a reelection does not deserve my vote, period.

My calling the left side (Liberals) socialist is based upon their incessant support of government control of business. Whether it be Environmental controls that are not balanced with economic needs or technological reality. Work safety controls which exceed common sense needs. Programs that are there to "encourage" equality but are not applied to everyone equally which interfere with business hirings, firings and promotions. The continue support of unions today that long ago moved from protecting workers rights to being greedy, causing inflation, outsourcing, the production of products with questionable quality and forcing companies to keep unneeded excess and non productive workers. Job protection schemes to "ensure" job security at the cost of expanding technological markets to allow competition within the market place. and many other reasons.

All of which amounts to excessive government control of business, which while it may not say it is socialism, to me any, any pursuit of excessive government control of the markets/business is in keeping with Socialist Philosophy, even if not actually following the described methodologies of Marx.

Many of these and more actually came about because of their pursuit of racial/sex equality (something I am not against, just their method of doing it) or through the economic philosophy of "Regulated Capitalism" which when applied with their tax policy, the end results look the same as the end results of pursuing Marxist Socialism.

Whenever I see something worthy of criticism, on both questions. There isn't some kind of moral obligation to praise someone you disagree with, nor to criticise someone you agree with. It doesn't indicate that you are a better person- just that you don't want to come across as biased.

Wow. Then what do you think of CEOs of corperations? I've known several CEOs. And how about a general rank of CEOs compared to politicians. Thanks.

My view of CEOs, as a group, is not nearly so dim. Some of them are downright decent human beings--I've known several myself. I think they tend more, as a group, to exhibit narcisistic or sociopathic behavior, and some of them are full-blown psycopaths. But they're not uniformly bad. Politicians, on the other hand, almost have to be evil based on the nature of the work they do. The only group that's on the same level as politicians would be, IMO, televangelists. Both groups (i.e. politicians and televangelists) have so many exemplars who are exposed for lying, fraud, graft, corruption, etc. etc. that I have a hard time understanding why any person would put their trust in any member of either group.

Obama sucks, Romney is worse. Neither are really "my" candidate, but I see the democrats as the lesser of two evils. I don't bother reading much anti-Obama stuff because too much of it is hyperbolic bull**** dropping obtuse talking points like "socialist." I do read some stuff criticizing Romney, because it agrees with my bias, but I'm still aware that republicans are a necessary evil to counteract the fiscal excesses of the democrats (though I think they've done a piss-poor job of it ever since Bush and their more recent eschewing and vilification of the concept of compromise).

...I have a hard time understanding why any person would put their trust in any member of either group.

I often see clips of political rallies and stare dumbfounded at how anyone could be so fervent over a politician of either persuasion. They apparently think getting their guy into office will lead to salvation while the other guy will lead to complete ruin and utter damnation. I sometimes get caught up in the latter belief, but try to snap out of it and realize who we elect makes as much difference as arguing over whether to set the thermostat to 70º or 74º.

Regarding the OP's question, I'm not sure how often I compliment any politician...

Totally depends on the canidate.

Some people I've voted for have been strictly out of defensive action against a really terrible opponent. It's not that I liked the candidate; it's that their opponent was certifiably insane. In that case, I may rarely or never compliment them, because I didn't vote for them out of support. I voted for them as a tactical maneuver to keep their looney toon opponent out of office.

Sometime the opposition has a lot of good points, and I try to give those where due. There are certainly conservatives I'm not at all shy about complimenting.

Whether or not I voted for someone may or may not have anything to do with how much I like them. Sometimes there are no good candidates -- just bad and really bad. Sometimes they seem mostly the same and neither stand out to me. On rare occasion, they're both good.

As far as this particular presidential election?

I would doubt I've complimented Romney more than once or twice. I like him less and less as time goes on. I just don't find anything about him likable. He's unappealing in terms of policy, leadership qualities, and basic ethics. Everything I hate in a candidate.

Obama? I have complimented him, and I think he deserves a little more than he gets. But I've also been very loud about some things he's done that I think are pretty egregious. I don't strongly favor Obama, but realistically, he's doing as well as I could imagine anyone doing given how America is right now, and he's certainly way better than Romney.

When it applies.
Many things that are put on Obama’s shoulders is not his fault. I disagree with Romney on a lot of things. So when it is something that applies to one of the candidates I will hold them to it.

I'm relatively conservative but I'm not particularly partisan.

Michelle is hot.

I almost never compliment any candidate. They're politicians and hardly anything impresses or surprises me these days anyway. I might say something not at all related to his job like "He's an excellent teleprompter reader. Wish i can do that in front of 400k people."
