Puerto Rico is having a referendum in November to choose whether it should be a territory, a state, an independent nation, or freely associated with the US.

What do you think it should be?

A place with regular referendums in which the three groups always seem to get 1/3 of the vote.

I don't think they should go independent.

Do they even want statehood? That's a huge deal whether they would even want it or not. West Virginia could re-unite with Virginia or we would have a flag re-design to do.

They should become an independent nation. The last thing we need is ANOTHER welfare state.

Personally I think it is the Dakota's that should unite. As a nation our north/south divisions have been much more problematic.

Feck that! We're a big enough state with our own issues as it is. Don't want more from a useless and out of left field combination.

I don’t think that anyone that does not live in Puerto Rico cares. I don’t think that the majority of people in Puerto Rico care either.

Whatever Puerto Ricans want it to be.

Since people have decided that once one decides to join the union as a state they are forever stuck with that arrangement it would be wise for them to decide not to be a state.

Also, considering that our freedoms are disappearing faster here than ever before it would again be wise for them to decide to not be a state.

The best choice for them is to completely leave us behind.

Noting that my current girlfriend is actually Puerto Rican herself (though she was born in NYC)....

I would be in favor of a two option vote for all current residents of Puerto Rico

1. Statehood.
2. Independence.

They can make their decision and move on from there.

You don't think territory/free association should be options?

Obviously it is up to them. Which would you prefer, is the question?

Puerto Rico should decide what Puerto Rico wants to do. It's none of my business.

No, I do not. I don't think Guam and the other terrirory/protectorate regions should be allowed to continue to ride the coattails of the United States without putting anything into the pot either. Either you want to be a full STATE, with all the Responsibilities and Duties thereof, or you want to go on your own way. Figure out which one is in your better interest and make the decision.

I think Puerto Rico should become an independent nation. The US certainly can't afford another state right now, especially a state with the poverty that Puerto Rico has.

I support Puerto Rico in either statehood or full-on independence, but that is because I think that the whole "territory" system is undemocratic, unfair (to Puerto Rico) and utterly 19th century. I see it as bad that Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, etc. can be forced to follow laws that they have no say in writing and laws which the states (full of white people, coincidentally) do.

It is your business, Puerto Rico being a state affects the entire nation.

Not really, no more than Rhode Island does. If Rhode Island seceded tomorrow, most people would neither notice nor care. We're not talking about a massive state with millions of people and a huge financial impact here, we're talking about less than the population of Los Angeles.

They don't get a say, but they also don't pay income taxes or some of the other fees that the rest of us do.

Think about it for a few seconds. That would mean 2 more senators in Congress, and since Puerto Rico has 3,000,000 people that would mean several more HOR.

Plus, we should give some thought to the political state of people in our own jurisdiction.

So we raise the number of corrupt politicians by 2%. Yeah, that's important.

I do not really know what they will do, or what they should do for them, but for the united states i think it would be great to adopt them as a state. More revenue is never bad.

It is, unless you don't live in the country

I don't live in Puerto Rico. It is their decision, they can vote to become a state or they can vote not to become a state. It's up to them. The only impact it will have on me is having to buy a new flag when they add a new star.
