I used to hear that hemp was illegal because marijuana plants could be hidden within the fields, and it would undermine the "War on Drugs" because both plants are closely related. Now, I am against the War on Drugs anyways, but I just assumed that hemp would remain illegal unless marijuana became legal.

I will point out that hemp isn't technically illegal, but a federal law gives the Drug Enforcement Agency(DEA) the power to grant hemp farming permits, which is never does.

For all of the talk of marijuana being grown in hemp fields, I recently learned(and I should have thought of it earlier) that cross pollination between hemp and marijuana effectively destroys both crops, because it reduces the genetics of the plants by half. This pointed out during a press conference I watched, which featured Senator Rand Paul, the Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner, and a couple of State Senators. Therefore, the marijuana argument is invalid.

Why is hemp illegal then? Powerful business interests that don't like competition. It has tons of great uses, including ethanol, clothing, plastics, and food, among others.

Is there any legitimate reason why hemp shouldn't be legal?

Who voted to keep it illegal? Why?

It's retarded to keep hemp illegal, even if you think marijuana should be illegal, you can't get high from hemp, and we can make everything from paper, to clothes, to plastic from hemp.

Did you cross check anything? ;)

Legalize hemp, marijuana, and every other drug. It is stupid to keep them all illegal and is also a huge waste of money that we really don't have to be wasting

What? Where in the world did you get that idea?

I am hoping my internet sarcasm meter is working.

I agree, though hemp isn't a drug.

I agree, but only with the condition we stop providing all sorts of subsidized health care to those who abuse opioids, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, sleep aids and various prescriptions and synthetics. Drugs should be legal, but so should the practice of denying addicts bailout money after their addictions ruin their lives. Abuse at your own risk.

Oh without a doubt. There is no funding to alcoholics and nicotine addicts unless they seek the help to get over them and it should be the same for any drug

So applying an "out of sight, out of mind" attitude to drug policy?

That's funny, I thought drugs were dangerous.

Tobacco and alcohol are completely safe though

I'm not implying they are. What you're saying is that just because tobacco and alcohol are legal, we should legalize literally every other drug, even the really dangerous ones?

People do them anyway.

Are you gonna do heroin and meth because they're legal? Probably not. Just because they're legal doesn't mean that people are gonna do them more

None. Another example of big biz misusing the power of government through undue influence.

Fully incorrect. Many people shy away from these substances because they fear consequences. Are you implying that making drugs illegal does nothing to deter their use?

I wouldn't say nothing but it doesn't do much. I could get weed in under 5 minutes if I wanted to. I don't because I don't really want to do it. The law has no holding on that decision. I am fairly certain that I wouldn't get caught, I just don't do it

Applying a "you're an adult and you don't get me to send me the bills your self sabotaging behaviors generate" policy toward personal liberty.

Might. But probably offset by the "forbidden fruit" element.

And dont get me started on the negative consequences of the govts deli erate disinformation campaigns. Telling kids pot is EXACTLY as dangerous as heroine.

So a kid succumbs to peer pressure and tries pot. Discovers he has been lied to. Assumes they were lying about heroine and...

And heroin? Opium? Cocaine? You honestly can't tell me the DEA has done nothing to quell the use of drugs...
