Did Mitt Romney go a full 10 years without paying taxes?

Is Harry Reid Correct?

  • No, Reid is the victim of a black-bag operation by the RNC to make him look like an idiot

He paid no taxes on USA inheritance for his kids. $250 mil tax free.

And he paid no taxes on over seas assets. So his over all rate would be very very low, say 1-2%.

why do people just pull this sort of crap out of thin air?

I hope he took every single legal loophole that exists in American tax law.

The last person that should run America is some economic dumbass who gives the U.S. government more money then it is entitled to.

If you are dying to give your money away - give it to charity where it does some REAL good.

Not to the pathetically inept U.S. government.

American tax law is irrelivant.

Swiss law is
Cayman law is (ZERO TAXES on Mega rich)
and any other place he hides his ~$400 mil.

It was reported on NPR from a tax lawyer.

USA law has special exemption for certian stocks that are inheritied.
Joe USA cant get this exemption.

Not "while minimizing his tax exposure". Not "did he count losses against his gains". Did he go a full 10 years without paying taxes.

No. No one thinks he does.

People use the expression, "That'll cost you nothing" or "you can get it for a song" all the time.

What's on those forms would crush his hopes of winning. It's just to damning for most people to see a super wealthy individual get out of paying taxes.

If Romney is not breaking the law, why are you ranting. I know a lot about death taxes and you do not

I think most people are misunderstanding Harry Reid's assertion. He never said Romney did not file a 1040 form with the IRS for 10 years. He said "he didn't pay taxes for 10 years". The implication: with charitable deductions, writing off taxes paid to other governments due to international business dealings and other write-offs, Romney had zero tax LIABILITY for 10 years. I don't know this to be the case but its certainly plausible.

If the man followed the law it is a non-issue

this is all about class warfare operatives trying to stir up resentment against Romney in the minds of the ne'er do wells

Not quite. If he followed the law and made millions while paying nothing or an absurdly low tax rate that amounts to next-to-nothing, then there's a serious issue with the tax law that needs to be discussed.

I wouldn't say he did anythign wrong, unless he was instrumental in the creation of said laws.

whine about the laws but to whine about the man is moronic

and he had nothing to do with the laws.

what I want to know is how so many dems that come into office with almost no net wealth end up dying multimillionaires

Well, no. It is an issue if it effects how people vote, which is quite possible. Niether you nor I get to pick what is an issue or not, except for ourselves.

I'm convinced Romney followed the law but if he was able to write off his tax liability to zero and the public learns of it conclusively it will push the "wealthy get away with too much" buttons, which MIGHT be why he'd rather not release everything. Its entirely plausible that Romney even benefited from Wall Street bailouts in years that he didn't have any tax liability. ???

Again, I don't KNOW any of this to be true and if it were me, I'd do the same thing.

Follow the law is one thing...but to hide under a skirt about it is another....if he ducked and dodged and swindled and played games and ran offshore and it was all legal cool....SHOW US ALL THE FINANCIALS he wont do that because he PAID squat in taxs and the rich cant allow america to see the real truth up front and personal...that the rich are full of kaka up to their eyeballs and pay peanuts compared to what they should...they just whine louder than cats in heat incessantly

:prof Calling legitimate concern over bad laws "whining" is moronic. You aren't a moron, TD, so don't do that.

Saying Romney did something wrong by exploiting bad laws, though, if he had nothign to do with those laws is moronic. Saying he's wrong to support the continuation of those laws, however, is not.

and he had nothing to do with the laws.

Presumably, but after a lifetime involved in the political arena it's hard to say for sure.

They, too, exploit the bad laws they (as a group along with republicans) help put in place and continue to maintain.

that really doesn't address what I said. someone claimed (in a written opinion piece) that 60% of the women who voted for Clinton did so because they found him more sexually desirable than GHWB.

in other words, many voters are morons. The Obama toadies are playing to idiocy

Your posts demonstrate that you dislike Romney because he is very successful. You wouldn't change your opinion no matter how many taxes he paid because those with investment income who make lots of money will pay less on investment income than on salary

that is what really bothers you

some errors in that-Romney has not spend a lifetime in politics

and people are whining about the laws and blaming Romney

He certainly has spent a lifetime in politics, even if he didn't spend a lifetime as a politician.

and people are whining about the laws...

Like I said, I know you aren't a moron. You can't trick me into thinking you are. ;)

No my posts reflect why hes dropping in the polls...hes waging an elusive campaign because he cant afford america to see him for what he really is and what hes really been about. His whole campaign has been about dodging his record as Gov on Romney Care...on his dirty dealings and abuse of the working class at bain to his off shore accts and low tax payments and his refusal to outline anything hes truly about and what hes going to do....

how do you prove that-I have voted every election since I was 18

you could say the same about me or anyone who actually stays informed

I suspect what you think Romney is is hardly a realistic view of what most people see. "abuse of the working class" pretty much sums up your seething class hatred

He's a member of a political family, with all of the political connections that entails.

I don't know if you are a member of a political family. I'd say the same thing about a Kennedy or Daley as I say about Romney.

If the IRS/federal government says they are legally fine with whatever Romney did with his money - wherever it is - then I am fine with it. And unless he did something illegal with it, then it is NONE of your/my business where it is.

If he placed (legally) a TON of his money off shore for tax purposes - good for him.

Only a moron would pay more taxes then he/she legally has to.

And I don't want a moron in the WH.

yeah, and if that means sticking it in the cayman Islands where he pays nothing and leaves it to the rest of us to pick up his share of the tab, more power to him, right? You guys continue to impress.
