Should Penn State football get the NCAA 'Death Penalty'?

Should Penn State football get the NCAA 'Death Penalty'?
 
Since anybody who heads the program going forward would likely have had nothing to do with the scandal I see no reason to shelve them.
 
I say 'yes'.

Though it's really more of 'Temporary Coma' penalty (if SMU was any example).
 
Only if the NCAA can provide a good answer to this question: why should the thousands of students and numerous athletes who chose that university, and have done nothing wrong, be punished for the actions of a few people?

What? The entire reason for the PSU "scandal" was the cover up, the entire reason for the cover up, was PSU FOOTBALL. To assert, that without PSU football and the MONEY it generated, that there would have been ANY reason for the cover up is baffling. I agree that the NEW players, suckered into signing at PSU, have no blame, but without PSU there is still plenty of opportunity for both college and football, just not there. I say auto "red shirt" them and let them seek scholarships elsewhere. PSU will likely be sued nearly out of existance, to use funds generated by the NEW football players to repay judgements for past ILLEGAL acts is INSANE. The NCAA should not let football (or any sport) subsidize illegal activity past or present.

Not really. SMU hasnt really recovered from it. They have only had 3 winning seasons since the "death penalty."

If they figure out a way to do it without penalizing the players i would be for it. Its not their fault after all. Hopefully there will be criminal charges for the people involved in the cover up.

Not just the players, but other programs and students. Football provides a rather large amount of money to schools through ticket sales, licensing, and other fees. Killing the program entirely because a dead man, a child molester, and a few other idiots made really, really bad decisions is like saying we should kill off all BP exploration/mining because of the Gulf Oil Spill.

Why should they be allowed to help PAY the costs of for those past criminals? Football makes money, court judgements cost money. Where do you suppose the money to pay the massive PSU civil suits will come from? ALL outside funding for those crooks should be stopped.

No, it is like saying that PSU should NOT be allowed to use future NCAA money to pay for its past crimes. Wait until AFTER all the sexual abuse victims have been repaid, via the upcomming massive civil suits, and THEN talk of resuming football (and other sports) to make money for that school.

You stop the outside funding for those crooks by firing those crooks, or providing an ultimatum where the "death penalty" is on the table but can be avoided if PSU gives them the boot. Then it's on PSU itself and to make the decision.

I hope so too, yet why should all of the future NCAA generated money be used to repay those past victims? Much money that PSU will get is from a pool of MANY other schools, that did NOTHING wrong either. Allowing ANY NCAA sports to fund those victims takes the load off of everyone else at PSU. Let PA and PSU pay the HUGE civil settlements from their past crimes not the entire NCAA.

They had that opportunity in 1998, and again in 2001 and all of the following years to come clean. They did not take action. This was not three guys, the entire school AND TOWN profitted from that football money for over a decade. Firing a dead guy and two other old farts will NOT make the civil penalties go away from PSU. There is NO reason to have the entire NCAA fund those victims.
 
Yes. they should be banned for 10 years.

During the SMU Death Penalty period - the NCAA could have just banned the players and all those involved (including the 'boosters') from having anything to do with the football team...but they didn't.
They gave them the death penalty for infractions much, MUCH smaller then the horrific things that happened at PSU.

The PSU football team is not curing cancer or fighting al Qaeda...they are just playing football.


What would these people had to have done/covered up before you people would agree that the Death Penalty is warranted?

Murder? Mass murder? What?

Is continual and ongoing child molestation/rape not enough for you all?

The tragedy happened because a group of people thought a football program was so damned important that they allowed children to be molested. The NCAA death penalty is needed, not for vengeance, but because too many people at Penn state continue to support that attitude by defending Paterno. A clear message needs to be sent that football is just a game and losing a few seasons is nothing compared to the horror suffered by those kids.

Very well put, imo.
 
as someone who does not believe in group rights or group sin, no. The penalties should be applied to those involved in abusive or dishonest behavior. The main perpetrator is going to be getting probably a most painful lesson on what happens to child rapists in prison. The head of the program when this happened is dead. Other administrators were fired. Freshman who chose Penn State have no blame. Same with the fans or for that matter any of the current players and certainly not the taxpayers of the state of Pennsylvania.

The fans don't get any sympathy from me or anyone especially after the way they acted after paterno was fired.

How many Penn State fans are there? and how many did you see? and what was actually known when Joe P was fired?
