I think this question needs to be asked based on the arguments made in my previous poll. Some people just didn't see the relevance to why patriotism would be associated with where one puts their money.

Romney has tax havens in foreign banks for the purpose of avoiding US taxes.

He has made his money and taken advantage of the prosperity that the US allows him, yet he sets up foreign bank accounts to avoid paying the taxes on the money he earned here.

So the question is: Is paying your taxes Patriotic?

Remember, this is someone running for the highest (suppose to be) most respected position in the world.

Re: Is paying your taxes Patriotic?

Paying your taxes makes you a loser.

How much of a loser you are depends on how many taxes you pay.

People who pressure others to pay taxes and take pride in humility are predators who need to be put in their place.

Re: Is paying your taxes Patriotic?

Wow fast reply there dak.

I realize some people don't like the word patriotic and think it gets thrown around too much to have any relevance. To those people I am sorry, but I have no better word for it at the time.

Re: Is paying your taxes Patriotic?

Patriotism has to do with culture, not economics.

The phrase you want is socially responsible, but there's nothing socially responsible in giving money to people who forcefully take it like a bully taking your lunch money.

Re: Is paying your taxes Patriotic?

That's one thing that has always amazed me. You got all these "God Bless America", flag waving, lapel pin wearing "true patriots" over at FOX (and even here at DP) nonstop whining about the price it costs to live in the best nation on the planet. Wah, wah, wah.

Living in the USofA is worth it at twice the price. Love it or leave it.

Most conservatives today are militarist neocons who insist on industrialist, workaholic, rugged individualism.

I'm not one of them. I support organic conservatism where we recognize procedural justice and freedom of assembly. Nobody asks to be born in this country, so nobody deserves to be guilt tripped into affording social institutions.

Telling people to leave makes as much sense as blaming a hostage for being kidnapped.

Patriotism has nothing to do with it, therefore, who cares?

You'll pay anything they tell you to?

You could always go off the grid....of course you wouldn't have any benefits of a modern civilized society!

Could doesn't mean ought.

If something's built in your name, you're entitled to use it.

It's a choice. The percentage that you've paid into any public goods you currently use is miniscule. Even Warren Buffets contribution is miniscule when you're talking about the taxes collected and used for public goods we use. This idea that you haven't already exceeded in use what you've paid in taxes to me seems a little farfetched!

No, mandatory association is not a choice.

Significant percentage and appeals to absurdity are subjective.

Unless you're trying to go on a witch hunt via mob justice, I don't see what your point is here.

Re: Is paying your taxes Patriotic?

I can't believe I'm defending this Repunantcan wanna-be President but I just react the same way I do to ludicrous accusations against the other guy.

Romney has tax havens in foreign banks for the purpose of avoiding US taxes.
• What is your basis for this accusation? Keeping money in foreign banks does NOT exempt you from paying taxes on anything that money might earn. There is a box on the tax return that REQUIRES you to disclose foreign bank accounts. Considering the blithering idiots that we have for politicians and their propensity to create ever more imaginary US dollars, anyone in their right mind would keep some money offshore and in other currencies.

He has made his money and taken advantage of the prosperity that the US allows him, yet he sets up foreign bank accounts to avoid paying the taxes on the money he earned here.
• Same hackery. Do you really think you are helping Obama by making up fairy tales?

So the question is: Is paying your taxes Patriotic?
• No, it's MANDATORY. You should pay as little tax as possible UNDER THE LAW.

Let me summarize. Obama wasn't born in Kenya. Romney isn't avoiding taxes. Good Grief©

Re: Is paying your taxes Patriotic?

You'll pay anything they tell you to?

Let's be sensible here. Of couse not. But the taxes now, under Obama, are lower than they have been in 30 years. He's NOT coming for our guns and all the white women. He's is NOT a marxist. He is NOT a socialist. He is NOT a Kenyan. He is NOT a Muslim. He is NOTHING his brainwashed haters are trying to sell us that he is. It amounts to not much more than paranoid delusions.

Who is this demon the rightwing is talking about on FOXNews? (And even here by some of the more whacko posters.)

I don't even know who THEIR Obama is. He certainly isn't the guy sitting in the White House.

I LOVE living in America. I loved living here when Bush was president and I love living here under Obama. I love having nice roads to drive on. I love having a very good school 1 block from my house where I can hear all the little children laughing and playing outside, from my back yard. I LOVE being able to afford jumping on a plane 2 or 3 times a year and going fishing in Florida on my meager salary. I LOVE my police department. I LOVE my fire department. I LOVE our troops and all the military who selflessly keep us safe at night so we can sleep in our own beds. I LOVE having electricity to run my air conditioner and appliances. I LOVE being able to buy gasoline less than a 1/2 mile from my house.

These things cost money. And the price we are paying for it is CHEAP! Funny how the one's who love to tromp all over "freeloaders" and "entitlements" are usually the ones who complain the most about having to pay to be living in the best place in the world.

It's not mandatory. I'm guessing at this point in your life you could leave, or move to Alaska or the Montana wilderness and live off the grid. It's inconvient but nobody realisitically is going to come to your hut you built on your own and ask you to rejoin society.

Of course..if you live as part of a society and benefit from that society it's expected that you'll pay for the upkeep.

Unless you're trying to go on a witch hunt via mob justice, I don't see what your point is here.

Where does this come from? I'm arguing that you've received in public services AT LEAST as much as you've paid in taxes so it's not really a valid excuse as to why you can't at this point leave or go incognito.

Re: Is paying your taxes Patriotic?

If you consider all taxes and fee's, this is an outright lie.

Can does not imply ought. It's not your right to expect anyone to do anything ever unless you have a prior agreement.

It's inconvient but nobody realisitically is going to come to your hut you built on your own and ask you to rejoin society.

Convenience is subjective.

Yea exactly. You're trying to guilt trip me into affording participation I didn't ask for. Knock it off.

People don't pay their taxes because they're patriotic. One has nothing to do with the other. People pay their taxes because they're afraid not to. All this blah-blah-blah about Romney and his taking advantage of perfectly legal ways to save on taxes is just plain hooey. There's nobody ponyin' up one thin dime they don't have to. And those who say they do? I don't believe 'em.

Americans paid the lowest tax rates in 30 years to the federal government in 2009, in part because of tax cuts President Obama sought to combat the Great Recession, congressional budget analysts said Tuesday. <snip>

During Obama’s first year in office, the average tax rate paid by all households fell to 17.4 percent, down from 19.9 percent in 2007, according to the CBO. The 2009 rate was significantly lower than the previous low of 19.4 percent in 2003 and well below the 30-year average of 21 percent.

It's your turn now. Put up or shut up.

You got some evidence or is it you who is outright lying?

Like the article says, Every candidate for the last 30 years has released their tax returns yet Romney is refusing to do so. I am only speculating here, but I think it is safe to say that he has something to hide.

Well then why won't he just release his tax information, I mean c'mon, every candidate for the last 30 years has done so yet Romney refuses. I dont mean to sound like a birther here but what the hell has he got to hide?

Source for this assertion? Under Obama the VISIBLE cost of gov't was reduced, but it is the unfunded mandates that cause the most harm.

How do you figure that?

I wouldn't waste your time or hold your breath waiting for a response. He just likes to run around calling people liars who he doesn't agree with.

I would say taxes are simply a quid pro quo. You either pay them, or you go to jail. Patriotism, imo, would be buying American made goods.
