Growing Republican Chorus Pushes Romney To Release Tax Returns | TPM2012

[...]On Thursday, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), who heads all House GOP campaign efforts, told reporters that questions about Romney’s holdings were on target, according to CNN.

His personal finances, the way he does things, his record, are fair game,” Sessions said. While he declined to name a specific amount of information or number of years’ worth of tax returns Romney should release, he called the issue a “legitimate question.” Romney has only released his 2010 tax return and had said he will release his 2011 return before the election.[...]

Romney spent months bellowing about China "stealing" jobs yet Romney was acquiring shares and making millions in Global-Tech, the firm publicly acknowledged that its strategy was to profit from prominent US companies outsourcing production abroad.

He was already uber wealthy in the hundreds of millions ... he could have been a "community activist" aka philanthropic wealthy patriotic American ... at that point to restore an impoverished American city ... yet in our cheap American culture some would view this as not glam or rich or predatory enough.

He blasted Obama for investing and saving in one of our few manufacturing bases left in our country.

He was freaking uber wealthy as this point (no I am not jealous I am happy with my 6 figure income providing health care to American citizens) and Romney's income is safely tucked with his other untaxed 30 million plus in off shore accounts. He is the .01 % and does not pay taxes on the same playing field whatsoever as middle class or upper middle class hard working Americans.

A greater percentage of my income goes for national security, military, medicare, infrastructure, border control etc than Mitt Romney. Of course ... I am sure he needs another 20 million dollar house with a garage elevator. ( Does that take a male closer to heaven in the LDS church?)

He wants to boasts vague rhetoric that he "knows" how to create jobs because he inherited millions and then made uber millions dismantling companies who made multi millions for a few by outsourcing to India and China.

Romney is a rich boy poseur who will pander to whatever base is in front of him. he want sto add POTUS to his Morman Curriculum Vitae for status. The GOP messed up ... they had an outstanding conservative candidate.

As Newt Gingrich put it during the primary season, “I don’t know of any American President who has had a Swiss bank account.” But Romney has, as well as other interests in such tax havens as Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.

Oh another example.

There is a Bermuda-based entity called Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd., which has been described in securities filings as “a Bermuda corporation wholly owned by W. Mitt Romney.” It could be that Sankaty is an old vehicle with little importance, but Romney appears to have treated it rather carefully. He set it up in 1997, then transferred it to his wife’s newly created blind trust on January 1, 2003, the day before he was inaugurated as Massachusetts’s governor. The director and president of this entity is R. Bradford Malt, the trustee of the blind trust and Romney’s personal lawyer. Romney failed to list this entity on several financial disclosures.

And just what is "the issue", if not to pretend that they do not do EXACTLY what they are saying is "unique" to Romney? One was second in line for the presidency and the other is not only an elected official but the head of the DNC. For them to say that Romney should issue MORE financial data from years ago, he has already released his current return, simply because they "say so", yet at the same time saying that SAME information about them is "not relevant", as you do, is a hoot. Just why is only the executive, and not all lawmakers, subject to this "open and honest" disclosure of their personal finances? The president can not make law or appropriate funds, yet the congress can and does constantly. Ask yourself which DC position is more subject to corruption, those that actually make the law (including earmarks) or those that may only either sign or veto it? Sitting back and demanding others do as they say, yet not as they do, is the ultimate hypocrisy.

Let me help you with the issue: Should Romney Be Expected To Release Tax Records and Financial Holding Records?

Whether the people asking are being hypocritical or not doesn't matter(really they are not because different people in different situations are often held to different standards...see standards for factory workers vs executives), whether they have hidden motives, whatever just does not matter. The question is whether the general public should expect it. Should you expect it? Should I? Would I be a hypocrite if I did expect it? It is not about the fact that some one person asked for it, but about what those voting in November should expect.

Expecting it is one thing.

Demanding it is another.

If obama jacks up the tax on the top bracket to the 40% he wants, treats dividend income as ordinary income and imposes his health care taxes as he wants he will be the biggest tax hiker he will be the biggest tax hiker I (and most people under the age of 85) have ever seen

Fair enough. This additional information is very much appreciated. That said, blaming a guy for being the largest hiker we have ever seen based upon what he might do seems a bit disingenuous, particularly since his real resume is being a net tax cutter delivering the lowest taxes in 60 years.

Under Obama Taxes Reach Lowest Level Since Truman - Robert Schlesinger (usnews.com)

Now, we can appreciate the fact you don't trust the guy, but only Christ can condemn a man for what is in his heart; us mortals must deal with what he has actually done, which again is that he has been a tax cutter. Now I say this with full acknowledgement that you are not a Christ believing man (as you have claimed in the past), so in your world, there is no one that can condemn a man for what is in his heart.

I think the idea of ascribing blame to some one based upon what YOU think they might do is a slippery slope of argument.

I would also argue that allowing a temporary tax to expire is not the same thing as raising taxes, but that is a another argument.

 This is as a share of GDP. Except that revenue follows GDP rather than nominal rates. So - though you probably didn't intend it - what you actually just argued here is that under Obama GDP growth is so atrocious that it's creating as huge a negative disruption to revenues as the massive shifts of men and resources following the end of WWII.

:) there's no pwnage like self-pwnage. ;)

Still touting Hauser's (failed) Law? It failed, the range within it is huge, and trying to suggest nominal rates don't effect revenue is stupid.

The SAME nominal rates, that YOU praise Obama for, are the very "Bush" FIT rates that Obama BLAMES for the economic slow growth. You fail to note the the annual federal deficit has DOUBLED under the Obama tax/spending policies, or that his big PPACA "accomplishement" continues to grow in the CBO estimates of its increased cost to the taxpayers.

Wait, what? I praised Obama for nominal rates? You can of course show where I did this. Or admit you are making **** up.

If Romney didn't try to avoid taxes I'd find him too stupid to vote for

This simple statement really does define you as a citizen...and to be honest, simply voting as someone like you does, would make me question my own integrity.

Much is being made right now of Romney having a Swiss bank account, not having released all his tax records, and his offshore holdings. Is it fair and right to expect him to release all that information to the public?

Don't know nor care.

Romney is just as free to release them or not as voters are just as free to not vote for him over it.

I stand corrected. That was upsideguy's post (yet you did NOT object to that post, either).

The question for this poll is: "Should Romney Be Expected To Release Tax Records and Financial Holding Records?"
And there have been several POV on this issue, but I think I've been missing something. Romney and team has been touting his business expertise where Obama has none. The basic contention is that Romney knows how to run an American business because he has done a lot of that, many businesses, successfully and become rich doing it. As I'm to understand it, he started with little and by operating American businesses, small to large, providing jobs to many, he became rich and deserved it. So what if he did some tax avoidance in the Caribbean islands and had some Swiss bank accounts; this was all minor compared to his real American business that he ran providing jobs for Americans. What I haven't been able to find out is what are the American businesses he ran, how small did he start, approximately how many American jobs did he create. Where can I find out what I want to know? Please help me.

If you're sincere in your need for info, the internet is your friend. Try here.

However, the answer is, he created far more jobs than Obama did before he was POTUS.

Romney is not running against Obama before he was president.

Under normal circumstances, it's not a big deal to me and I don't really care about tax returns. HOWEVER, and this is a big however, the immense secrecy and steadfast refusal of Team Romney to release any more details than 1 year of tax returns is a HUGE red flag to me. He is VERY OBVIOUSLY hiding something ugly, or else the returns would have been released a long time ago to put the issue to rest. The fact that he is still refusing to release any more returns is extremely telling, and there's simply no arguing otherwise. It's very fishy.

He absolutely should release at least 8 years, like President Obama has done. However, given how much of a weasel he is being with the Bain Capital story ("I was CEO, President, and sole stockholder and collected a salary for 3 years but had nothing to do with the company") I want to see the tax returns of those years as well.

I've been looking where your suggestion led me. The principal–agent problem interests me the most right now. Thanks.
Just so you have a bit of insight into what I've seen in the business world: A CEO of a division of a large US based corporation made the cover, i.e. his image was the only one on the cover, of Time. He could recognize me from behind at 50 ft and call me by my last name if he wanted engineering information from me. I was in team meetings he lead, about 7 of us, with him. I have known some CEOs and I wouldn't elect any one of them for public office nor to create jobs.

It seems I have hit a nerve. You should learn the meaning of both words. That knowledge will greatly assist you in discussing these issues where you encounter people pushing both concepts.

hyperbole has long been a pet peeve of mine. I think very little of those that engage in it.

Selective Transparency

...So how much do we wish to detour from the issues to know about the background of either candidate Romney or incumbent Obama? Some sort of compromise seems in order. If transparency is really what the public demands, and if these issues distract attention from a necessary debate over the economy, then in bipartisan fashion let us now demand full disclosure from both candidates: ten years of income tax returns from each, full and complete access for journalists to all known medical records of each, and complete release of all undergraduate and graduate grades, test scores, and other records...

no one really objectively cares--but the class warfare dems know that running on Obama's pathetic record is a sure fire loser so they divert by demanding this stuff so they can pander to the low wattage minions who are upset that anyone is wealthy

The dude's very young children must be posting here under dad's name...
