What should be the US National Anthem?

What should be the US National Anthem?

As far as song lyrics about what this country should be about, it would be hard to top the song most of us first learned in the third grade (so we already know the words), "This Land is Your Land," by Woodie Guthrie.

Sung here by his son, Arlo, with the Boston Pops ~

How about some Iron Maiden?

How about some Iron Maiden?

Should play that in the background of every political event.

Edit: And by that I refer to the song title...

No, it's because people are too lazy to even try anymore, despite the countless people who have sung it with great pride since 1814.

That's not the point about its being singable. Any good singer can handle the Star Spangled Banner. We usually find someone who can sing it well at sporting events. However, we're not all good singers. Many people can carry a tune, but have very limited range. Vocal range is not something that can usually be expanded through practice. It's like height. You get what you get. The point of making it easily singable is not so that people can be lazy and not try hard. It's to include the every day person.

One more thing: America the Beautiful does have one sticking point. It's that "God shed his grace on thee" line. The super obsessive separation of church and state people might have a fit over that. To me it seems like splitting hairs, and I'm an atheist. I just take that line figuratively. I guess that one line could be changed.

Really. can we leave anything alone anymore...Ive heard that song since I was old enough to understand english and for 55 yrs or more we've never had a problem finding someone to sing it. There is absolutely no reason to change our National Anthem after more than 200 yrs.
The song is about war yes...because WAR is what allowed us to be FREE and what we are. Leave it the hell alone...

I didn't vote because there is no OTHER option. I would vote for "This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Gunthrie, which actually compeated with the "Star spangled Banner" back in the early 30's.
Perhaps it would remind people that, this land is your land, this land is my land.... :peace
Not everyone likes the Star Spangled Banner. For one thing, it's hard to sing. It starts low and goes way up. It's also a song about war. That's why some people are in favor of us switching to America the Beautiful or some other song. However, for all its faults, the Star Spangled Banner is a catchy tune that stays in your head, and we've always been able to find singers who can handle it. I have mixed feelings. I like the song, but I wouldn't be mad if we switched to America the Beautiful. Vote what you think.

I have no problem with the Star Spangled Banner. IF it was to be replaced, the only current song I'd entertain as a replacement is Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA".

I say leave it alone. It may have some unpleasant lyrics but our history is unpleasant. The song itself is beautiful when done well. Other nation's anthems pale in comparison, those Canada's isn't bad.

Much as I love the A-hole from El Paso, I'm sticking with the Okie, Woody Guthrie. :lamo :peace

Some of you aren't into good Texas music and I understand that, but listen to this one by Kinky Friedman. Damned if the song isn't truer now than the day it was written. This would be my choice. Sold American.

You got that right, Cat. :2wave: :peace

Actually, it hasn't been the anthem for 200 years. It became the official anthem in 1931.

The Ray Charles version of America the Beautiful takes some beating. The Star Spangled Banner has a nice story behind it but the tune is, as has been pointed out, and old English drinking song and frankly it sucks.

So why is it a bad thing that the tune for The Star Spangled Banner was based on a drinking song?

As I'm getting the impression that some think so...

Personally, I think that just means it's more epic.

It means Kid Rock or Vanilla Ice could have sampled it and wrote new lyrics.

I like the Star Spangled Banner and do not think it should be changed. Regardless of what we pick someone is going to be offended or not happy.

The goal should be making sure everyone is offended and unhappy. Thus, I nominate Oh Canada as the new US national anthem.

We could just take the pieces from each of the songs in the poll and come up with "God **** the Spangled and Beautiful America, Yeah!"

You'll piss off the extreme secularists because it mentions God.
You'll piss off the far right religious conservatives because God is ****ing America.
You'll piss off the far left hippies who hate America because America is referred to as beautiful in the title.
And yelling "yeah" obnoxiously should piss off anyone that's rational

Yeah, but you wouldn't piss off the Canadians.

Yeah, but you wouldn't piss off the Canadians.

Have your ever tried? You could shoot them in the leg and hear "I am so surry my lower extremity got in the way of yer bullet." They don't get pissed off, they just hold it in and get revenge by sending us terrible artists.

I think one of two options from S.O.D. would be good candidates and could reinforce some negative stereotypes at the same time:

continued in next post because of video embedding limitation

disclaimer: to head this off at the pass..its a freaking joke and not reflective of my true feelings relax people!!
