"General Douglas MacArthur understood this danger to our liberty.“I am concerned for the security of our great Nation; not so much because of any threat from without, but because of the insidious forces working from within.” "

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” –
Dwight D. Eisenhower"

"
“I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.” - Dwight D. Eisenhower"

War seems to be our National business. Why is that?

Isn't this the type of discussion that should be generated in an election year?

I can't believe that this thread hasn't gotten more traction. We've recently participated in two wars built on lies, Iraq and Libya and we don't want to acknowledge we are being misused, misguided, and poorly served by our leadership. It's a reality that is hard to face, but we have continually profitted by WAR. That is our National Business. Deny it! Argue with me! Defend your beliefs if they run counter to mine! Let's get it on!

I cannot argue with you because I concur. I also believe that while we may have drawn profit from war that we're also bankrupting ourselves through it. I don't understand why people agree to endless wars. I feel like they live in a box where they can't see the truth of the horrors of war. They claim it is necessary, but it is not. War is hell, and trying to justify it is to live in an imaginary existence.

Its conveniently omitted that we were attacked on 911 and over 3,000 americans murdered and that was the second attempt on the WTC. Im all for predator drones and theres no other way at this point today to target terrorists and our known enemies in pakistan without them. I prefer to risk drones than the lives of special ops or our troops.
I do believe we need to get out troops out of many places in the world...its an enormous unnecessary cost...why do we still have troops in Germany ?
As far as the hate thing...none of them seem to hate us when were saving their ass's <kuwait> or when they are begging for the US to intervene..Saudi Arabia was ecstatic we moved on Iraq during the first gulf war, they were getting increasingly frightened of them.
The USA has taken the lead whenever the UN wanted interventiona and weve always provided the most for Nato...if the usa was to back out of all this and stop giving money to ANYONE..and flip the great big bird at everyone...watch how fast we all feel the love for us

I think of it like the perpetual war in 1984. Obviously that's a fictionalized and exaggerated version of things, but the reasoning is probably similar.

Not sure I can agree and hope you're wrong!

O'Brien says that the Party does what it does simply because it can.

"'Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is this. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?'" George Orwell - 1984 - Part 3, Chapter 3

Yes we were attacked on 9/11. Yes thousands of innocent lives were lost. Yes we had to do something about it.

We did.

Our intentions in Afghanistan were justified at first. However, that justification ended long ago when we crippled Al-Quida in that region. It really lost justification when Navy Seal 6 killed Osama bin Laden. We have lost over double the amount of lives killed in 9/11 to these wars. Iraq was NEVER justified. It was not worth it! None of our troops deserved to die over there. NONE OF THEM!

Nothing we're doing over there protects our freedoms. These wars do more to harm our National Security then actually protect it. The United States does not always need to be in military conflicts. The realization will set in to you that we cannot sustain it financially. It isn't sticking the middle finger at everyone...it is reigning back our empire in order to prevent assured economic collapse.

The government of the countries may not like that we're not involved anymore, but rest assured that the people within the countries will be glad we're not killing anymore. Drone strikes are not always accurate, and sometime we kill innocent people. Actually we do it all the time.

Why do we have troops in over 130 countries must less Germany? Is there a need for that?

We cannot be aggressors. We're not supposed to be that. We have our own issues here at home to deal with. We shouldn't allow our government to always have some distant land to fear when we should be fearing the decisions on Capital Hill.

That's the exact line I was thinking of, but couldn't remember the exact wording of the whole quote.

(edited for clarification purposes)

It's horrifying, isn't it? Illuminati territory.

What do we do to change this? I vote Green, but it seems ineffectual. It is obvious by who profits from these wars which Corporations are buying our politicians. Wholesale change is a possible solution. The 99% might really have an impact in this arena.

Sometimes things take on a life of their own. No one wanted things to turn out this way. Where do we go from here? That depends on the people becoming self aware.

From my observation bread and butter issues overwhelms war as a national business at this juncture. Five years has passed since the last recession and people have yet to see a light at the end of the tunnel. 40 million on foodstamps and unemployment rate is at 8.1%

The author needs to go back to school. This article is laden with fallacies, and all throughout the article, are quotes from famous persons in eye catching fonts, as well as all the charts, and pictures. The article is not meant to convey fact, but agenda. This is just more propaganda in the guise of moral high ground, in order to appeal to emotion.

I think the war in Afghanistan could have been handled better, but I'm not against it in any way. I don't agree with the war in Iraq, but I do agree with the Libyan campaign. Why? Because Gaddafi's time was up, he was going to die whether we participated or not, so we backed the winning team in order to ensure continued flow of resources.

The real question is if the 'no war for oil' crowd even attempts to consider why we fight for these resources. Every day, more fat stupid slobs squeeze out more stupid fat babies, because they cram too much food into their mouths. Because these mewling, rambling cabbages of humanity are so godamned fat, they need bigger vehicles, with the ****tiest gas mileage possible, so they can drive to and from giant ****ing cities that are lit up with lights, and sensors, and cameras, and displays telling us when the next stupid fat celebrity is going to be released in other stupid fat movie about nothing. This stupid **** is everywhere, consuming ridiculous amounts of power and energy, which doesn't just magically generate itself. We also require petrochemicals to produce the tons upon tons of plastics and polymers used every day in every thing we don't even think twice about, from packaging, to synthetic fabrics stupid little teenage girls will wear once, then discard. The problem isn't Bush, or the MIC, it's the millions of greedy stupid fat ****s that eat up all these resources, both literally and figuratively, and don't give one flying **** about the consequences of their disgustingly excessive consumption. However, they have absolutely no problem bitching about the war, as long as it gives them a happy **** **** moment by being part of the largest sociopolitical circle-jerk of the 21st century.
