Collaboration with competition... Produces the best results.

It really depends on the personality.

I collaborate with people who can think for themselves. I compete with people who can't.

Collaboration or I win.

I prefer to collaborate with others to achieve a positive result. Unless I happen to be the boss, in which case I just give orders and if there isn't a positive result, I merely kick ass and take names.

I'd rather do neither in most cases. I'm not very competitive by nature, but I'm pretty suspicious of others' intentions and catch on pretty quick if they're trying to throw me under the bus. We're all aware of scheming coworkers but to use something quantifiable, I've had business classes for instance where part of the grade for group work was from other members, so if they think you're setting the curve they'll down grade you intentionally. It became like those reality show "competitions" where it was better to stay on the phone and act like a dumbass, so they won't feel threatened. Hated the whole thing. I'd rather collaborate if forced into group work, but you know, it's better than letting them get away with that.

When surveying, usually working in the street or on a construction site, you have to work as a team and trust the other guy to do his job or you could easily end up dead or seriously injured. Collaboration is the only answer for me.

I try to be the best collaborator.

I'm happiest doing both with someone. An is example is a sport we participate in. Before competing we are helping each other. During competition we try to do better than they do. After we celebrate what everyone was able to do, then start practicing again. However, most frequently it's the person I'm dealing with that sets how the relationship is going to run. Sometimes it's the culture of the other person, e.g. an Indian, that sets the relationship.

Very interesting...
I may do the same, without realizing it..
I do buy into the team concept, I have never, IMO, been that good at things , that I can go "one on one"....but this does not mean that I have not tried, which can lead to frustration.

I'm a pretty thorough collaborator with people I work with.

Yea, I'm convinced that team chemistry depends on competence. The last thing I want on a team is a parasite who simply puts other people's ideas together.

The fun part of belonging to a team is putting those ideas together yourself with the other person. Formulating ideas together is what creates identity.

If someone intermediates, it defeats and ruins the purpose.

I'm a natural collaborator. I do that first, but if someone seems to be thwarting or stymieing the goal, I will compete to ensure the best out come. But that's rarely necessary.

I had the kind of job that I couldnt characterize as any one or two approachs when dealing with people.

If im dealing with a good citizen which is the lionshare..I collaborate with them...If they are not so nice...its always a confrontation.
