When foreigners star to panic and dump the dollar, the dollar crashes, setting off a spireling out of control chain of events, like gasoline being $8 a gallon, and low value compact cars costing $100,000, what are you going to say?

Re: When the dollar crashes, setting off a spireling out of control chain of events,

Damn! Forgot one.

"Told you so. Americans turned away from God, and now God has turned his back on America."

The world would be ****ed. You're talking about a collapse of the global financial/economic system.

Edit: It won't just be higher priced goods in America

tell us
what other currency are they going to use to place their assets in, and why that one?

When is this suppose to happen? 2069? For you, of course, we'll offer our low value compact car for $99,999.99!

that was pretty good forecasting
if past is prelude, then that is the equivalent of buying a $12,000 car today

If the dollar collapses that would mean the Euro would strengthen, replacing the dollar as world reserve currency. the Yuan won't be trustworthy cause China will just devalue their currency even more even if there's nothing to peg it to, or they'll just peg it to the Euro.

Of course if the Euro strengthens, then the euro-zone trade deficit will skyrocket. Also, China exports to the US will start to accumulate on their docks cause Americans won't be able to buy them, so they'll dump it on Eurozone/Canada/Australia/1st world countries/etc, accelerating the Euro-zone trade deficit.

I'm guessing Americans will be too poor to fill their tanks which would put a damper on the oil price inflation, just trying to be conservative.

Re: When the dollar crashes, setting off a spireling out of control chain of events,

I chose the Gov't spent too much, but that must be qualified. The Korporations manipulated the gov't to spend $700 billion per year on Military Offense/defense. The Korporations manipulated to prevent competition in their monopolies by small and local entrepreneurs by controlling all regulatory authorities to their own adavantage, think NRC, SEC, IRS, ad infinitum. The Unions created uncompetitive wage scales. All unions, public and private, demanded excessive retirement and healthcare packages. The Political class funded itself as gratuitously as royalty. Bankers created and moved paper, but not jobs. Plenty of blame to go around, but it all is gov't approved, so noone else can be blamed.

Why would the price of gas only double, if the price of a compact car would go up by 600-800%? Shouldn't either gas be $30/gallon or a cheap car only be $25,000-$30,000?

Re: When the dollar crashes, setting off a spireling out of control chain of events,

Our limping economy will preclude this type of massive inflation. We have proved over and over again that America does not need to be fiscally responsible and that every Administration or generation can spend more than they take in, citizens and government alike.

Even if an Archangel showed up and took over the Presidency tomorrow, there won't be a way to keep everyone working. 307 million mouths is a lot to feed, no matter how much make-work is created.

Stocks and real estate are the 2 most likely candidates for a bubble to save our false economy but those have been used up too recently. Minus a bubble, we have a relatively weak economy in which people are going to make less or the same. Food inflation will resolve most other potential inflations and you will not be seeing $8 gas, although you may be eating $8 eggs eventually.

As for what I will say: "whew, I'm so glad I own my house, my car, my furniture and my toys already. And wow, my Scion is worth $98,000 used!"

Now, if cat food inflates, better watch out cause one angry senior is coming for you (and 3 angry cats with sharp claws as well).

I WOULD say, "I am glad I know so many preppers."

Re: When the dollar crashes, setting off a spireling out of control chain of events,

I won't say anything, I'll be keeping a low profile and takin' care of business.

Re: When the dollar crashes, setting off a spireling out of control chain of events,

"I'm glad I invested in the yen."

Re: When the dollar crashes, setting off a spireling out of control chain of events,

I would probably just say a four letter expletive that begins with "f".

But I find it a little creepy when people sound gleeful about the end of the world, or at least the collapse of civilization. That would suck. No amount of feeling smug about why it happened would change the fact that a lot of people would die. How many people require medication to remain healthy? How many people in hospitals would survive the lack of power? How many people living in any kind of urban environment, or out in the desert in the west, would have access to enough food and water? How many people would freeze? There is nothing good that can come from such a wide scale disaster. Probably every one of us on this board would die. And probably everyone we've ever met. Even the folks like Goshin with the cowboy fantasies. It is our technology and our science that makes us live better than the middle ages.

For f#$^'s sake... WE WOULD ALL RUN OUT OF TOILET PAPER REALLY QUICKLY!! I don't care what it takes to prevent us from having to crap in a bucket and wipe with a towel and then have to wash that towel, I want that thing done. Anything to keep the toilets running and the paper stocked. Let's focus on the real priorities!

I guess not. The Euro will be the first to go, then follows the USD. At some time the USD will even pick up speed (well, relative to a crashing Euro, that's normal) but eventually go down the toilet as well. "Interesting" times ahead. :twocents:

Hint: use a sponge, like the French royalty at the time. ;)

Not much. By then will have converted most of the wealth generating assets and liquid assets over to whatever currency is replacing the dollar. The dollar won't crash until there is a viable alternative.

The Euro is a joke. The RMB is backed by a government few people are willing to trust in terms of monetary policy. That leaves, what the yen?

We'll know long before the dollar crashes what to switch to.

Re: When the dollar crashes, setting off a spireling out of control chain of events,

New Poll.

So, after the economy collapses, forcing more military cuts where only skeleton crews are left in Europe, Korea, etc; and China then invades Taiwan by using several super-sized container ships with 200,000 soldiers packed in as sardines on a one way trip, the battle is over in one week, what will you say?

The Euro-zone doesn't have constant massive trade deficits.
