Should this illegal immigrant be allowed to become a lawyer?

Should Jose Manuel Godinez-Samperio be allowed to become a US lawyer?

If he can't become a lawyer because if his immigrant status let's find a way to change the status. Seems pretty simple to me. We should give him as much leeway as legally possible to make him a citizen but we need to do that first.

It never ceases to amaze me when I read about someone that was brought here by their parents, went to school, went to college, now speaks in behalf of all illegals and carries signs while having a tirade of the injustice of it all. My question is....why didn't they apply for citizenship all those years ago? What is stopping them NOW? They want a free pass after getting a free education most of us paid for by working 2 and 3 jobs while their parents sent money back home instead of paying their taxes or paying for that free schooling their kid now has to become a productive member of a society they stole from an STILL wants a free pass.

They don't bother to become citizens because of our slack enforcement of immigration laws. There was no compelling reason for them to do so because our government let them slide for so long. What our government has done over the years regards immigration is dereliction of duty. Now we the citizens are asked to be the compassionate ones. What a load!

How do I say this... No. He can become a citizen, or he can gtfo.

Perhaps this young man should have thought about the impediment of his illegal status before he made the investment of time, energy and financial resources necessary to attend and graduate from law school. Lawyers have to anticipate foreseeable obstacles.

Florida has a sales tax only (no Income tax) So I assure you, he and his family paid their State taxes.
As to the Federal income taxes, those got withheld, but they could never ask for a refund.
Many illegal immigrants pay up at tax time - USATODAY.com
Florida should grant him his law license, if he can get an H1 sponsor. Florida has already spent
the money on his education, they should at least be allowed to recoup the money in taxes.
Some other state might agree to issue him a law license, he has great income potential,
he will be the kind of revenue stream most states want.

The only way they had federal income tax withheld is if they were using a stolen social security or green card number. That's the only way, unless they falsely register as a foreign worker to gain a tax ID number. If they did that and actually filed a tax form, they'd certainly get any refund owed... until they were caught falsifying their status.

The majority of illegals using stolen SS and GC numbers opt out of tax withholding by claiming enough dependents that minimal or no tax is withheld.

How can a scofflaw be admitted to the bar?

(Can anybody tell me why when I click on the "4" votes for option number one in the poll it only shows the names of three people who voted for option number one, not four names?)

On the one hand a 9 year old kid brought across the border by his parents did nothing wrong himself.

On the other hand if you say any kid snuk across the border by his parents becomes a US citizen, Mexicans would come and bring their kids for that very reason.

The only way to not have this dilemma is to secure damn border.

Yes. Guests are allowed to participate in the Polls section of DP. When you see about 100 votes, and only a handful of names, you see guest votes (they can vote over and over and over). That's why it's a good idea to make all polls so DP members are named.

There's an article about this here:
U.S. News - Can an illegal immigrant become a lawyer?

In short, this man, Jose Manuel Godinez-Samperio, came to the US from Mexico when he was 9. He graduated high school, college, and law school, and he's passed his state bar. Now he's having trouble becoming a lawyer because of his immigration status. For more details, read the article. Vote on whether you think he should be allowed to become a lawyer in the US.
Why are we even having this discussion? Do we no longer respect the laws of this country?

Thanks so much -- now I know. :)

The laws are being ignored even by the CIC.
I worked all my life. I made sure my kid attended school and had a decent lunch while studying but I could not afford college and he didn't want to go anyway. I have paid taxes and at one time, the IRS agent I went to for assistance told me he didn't care if I died or my family died tomorrow...they wanted what was due them. (I had to make a payment plan). I have never asked for or received foodstamps or government assistance. I have suffered from lack of medical care. And I am a citizen of the United States Of America.
So why does some person that sneaks across the border, pays nothing, takes all they can, get free medical help, schooling, lunches have it better than I ever did even though I paid into the system?

No second chance. No assistance to become citizens. Send them back across the damn border and make them do what OUR ancestors did.

The law should be that if you don't come here legally like all the other immigrants who came here before, then goodbye.

The irony of this situation is that if they were given a chance to become documented/legal, they could contribute more.

Yet...the lady I read about today has been fighting and speaking in behalf of her community in arizona (she also was dressed as an aztec complete with headdress), has NOT taken her chance given by being here for so long as an ILLEGAL. She still is. So what is her excuse? What is the lawyers excuse? What is all their excuses, those that have been here 15 and more years of being here and using services the rest of us pay for and they don't?

Try doing this in another country. See where it gets you. (General *you*).
And I still ask....why is Obama's grandma STILL here? Why are agents catching sneakers daily and shipping them back, but his grandma is still in the USA and her whereabouts are known. Would any mexican be able to stay if they plastered they were here illegally? Nope. They would be collected up immediately.

I'm not an expert on this situation, but I would surmise that their "excuse" is that they simply don't have a legal path to citizenship at this point.

Do you have a source for this? I can't find a source that confirms Obama's grandmother's whereabouts at this time.

I know. To be honest, I'm torn on this one. You'll notice I haven't voted in the poll. It's because I want to know more. What I do know for sure is this: I don't want anyone coming into the country who's an M13 gang member, a member of a drug cartel, a terrorist, or any other kind of violent criminal. This young man doesn't fit into any of those categories. If he's allowed to be an attorney in this country, odds are he'll be a good one. He'll be productive and pay taxes. He's not going to be a danger to the country.

On the other hand, we are talking about a law that was broken. Maybe he could be an immigration attorney in a border town in Mexico helping people to come her legally. In the meantime he could get the process rolling on coming here legally himself and getting citizenship. I feel some sympathy for this guy. I don't feel any sympathy for gang members or drug smugglers.

Personally, I am in favor of a more open border policy with regard to immigration. (This in no way means that I don't support securing the border from criminal elements or national security threats). But if someone is not a criminal or national security risk, they should be processed and given documents and their path to some form of legal status should be expedited.

What an excellent idea!! I wouldn't be opposed to letting him stay here IF he began the process immediately to become a citizen while he aids others do the same. But would he even consider it?

I'm sorry SB, I don't have a source. I just read about it somewhere and it struck me as odd that she is still here in the USA. His uncle too, I believe? Whether her whereabouts are known or not....Obama would know, wouldn't he?

I could not find a credible news source that stated for certain where Obama's uncle and grandmother were staying, or if they are even in the USA at all. I have a hard time believing that if they were here illegally that DHS/INS would not have done something about it already, not to mention that it would probably have already generated a media firestorm beyond just the few internet blog rumors that I've been able to dig up so far.

Agreed. But most don't even bother.
My husbands best friend was so proud the day he and his wife went to Los Angeles to be deemed United States Citizens. They both worked so hard to learn the language, put meals on their table, pay their taxes while going through the legalities. And we were so proud along with them.
He comes over often to visit because hubby is now retired, but Antonio is still working 3 jobs although his now large family is grown and have families of their own. He says nothing pisses him off more than for someone to claim they "no speak english" when they have ample opportunity to learn it. Heck, he still asks us what something may mean if he is confused. So he is still learning himself.

It is people like Antonio and his wife that should be given every opportunity to expand on their needs to become citizens. They are good people. And they did the right thing. They didn't ask for a handout. They worked for what they have and are now citizens of the United States Of America. He beams whenever he says that. We beam with him.

I don't remember where I read it. Maybe usmb. I wander so much on the net..sometimes quite loaded with pain pills until they kick in enough to make me able to sleep peacefully, unfortunately.
My apologies for not being able to back up what i said.
