If you are or not explain in what way.

Meh. Not much difference, but overall, yeah, I guess.

financially, yes.

I paid off my 10-years of pension payments and my buy-back, so I am collecting like $120 more a paycheck than I was 3-years ago. I have a new car, am in a relationship, went on a great vacation, haven't lost any more hair, and I'm back in school. My 401k earned EVERYTHING that it lost in 2008-2009.

so yeah, I'm doing just fine.

No - Things at present have stayed the same but soon things will change and whether that's good or bad depends on how much **** I'm willing to put up with.

This time 3 years ago I was a senior in high school, less than a month away from graduating.......damn can't believe it's been that long.

After a bit of turbulence(to say the ****ing least) I'm in college, and closer to moving out on my own than not.

So yeah I'd say I'm better off.

you are only 21 years old??????? amazing, as you write with the maturity of someone in the upper 20s/lower 30s. Kudos to you.

DH is a partner in a architecture firm and they are doing almost worse than 3 yrs ago. Not sure how much longer the firm can hold on. There have been many weeks where dh does not take a paycheck. He has been looking for a new job off and on for the last 2 yrs and no one wants to hire someone at senior level like him because the work is scarce. He has an interview a week from tomorrow so hoping for a new opportunity. It will be a long time until he makes what he was before this recession.

Definitely. I'm finishing up grad school, moved in to a bigger home (for less money than I was paying before), and have more money in the bank with fewer bills to pay. I'd say that I'm the best off I've been in the last 5 years. Everything was totally ****ed 4 years ago, though.

Putting aside my bias which some people can't do I will say no.

Hussein Obama and his administration froze all COLA raises so I could not keep up with inflation......Food prices at the grocery store have at least tripled.........Gas prices have doubled.........My stock portforlio is about where it was 3 years ago so I have only hold my own there..........There is total Cayous in the middle east with the threat of Nuclear War..........

fact is, almost all of my friends are better off today than they were 3 years ago.

some got married, some bought a new house, some have kids, some moved, some got a better job.

yep, pretty much everyone I know, is better off.

oh, so this is just another bash-Obama thread.

btw, what does "cayous" in the Middle East have to do with how you personally are doing?

I like how you mention finish grad school and the house (congrats on both of those), but not the kid.

Three years ago is not long at all, its like yesterday.

It scares the hell out of me.....If you don't believe a nuclear war in the mid east affects you then you are much more naive the I ever thought.......

Three years ago I would have been finishing my Sophomore year in college and my capstone project and getting ready to start my internship in DC and look for an apartment in Boston for the next school year. Now I have graduated college, have a job just to make some money and have applied and waitlisted at some graduate and law schools and potentially one big scholarship from a law school that I have to hear back from. I would say life is about the same.

There have been millions opf foreclosures on homes but of course none of them affected your friends............All of your friends did well on the maket huh..........Why do I bother responding to your posts.......

My stock portforlio is about where it was 3 years ago so I have only hold my own there..........

That's just some piss poor investing, right there. On 4/24/09 the Dow closed at 8,076.29; the NASDAQ at 1,694.29; and the S & P 500 was at 866.22. Today, as I write this post, they are at 12,992; 2,957; and 1370 respectively.

Why haven't you fired your investment adviser?

one friend bought a very big and nice house in the Vienna suburb of DC.

another friend bought a $600,000 apartment in Manhattan.

I bought a new car.

what can I say? I'm surrounded by happy & successful people. :)

Oh, I get it. Rather than promote a general and relatable discussion, you turn this into a blanant and poor political jab.

Way to go.

Doing much better. My business is taking off and expanding quite nicely. Energy prices are down in my area which makes my job a whole lot easier. I am about to have my daughter heading to college next year and a whole crap load of bills are about to be paid off in the next 4 months. That will be saving me about 2000.00 a month going out. I wouldn't say anything either of the last two admin. have done would have effected my all that much. I live well below my means and it is paying off in spades. I am about to be able to start putting a bunch of money in the bank. Looking to buy a new home in a new state next summer. Giving my current home to the daughter for a grad present.

My hope is that real soon everyone is going to be getting back on track.

A house as a grad present from high school?

Financially, absolutely.

My wife and I have completely paid off our student loans.
We've bought a house together and moved out of our crappy little apartment.
We just bought a new car.
We've been able to start putting money away in a 401k for our retirement.
We have been able to afford some luxuries around the house and to do some fun things we couldn't afford before.

On the other hand, some really bad **** has happened to us in the last 3 years as well, and much of our current prosperity is due to that.

All in all, I'd say things have come out about even. My wife would probably disagree though.

I'd have to say yes. My family moved into a bigger and nicer house about 2 years ago. There's been some bumps, but I'd say I'm better off.

Still need a car though.
