Why?So that the government and private business can track your spending habits?

Because I already do nearly all of my spending on a credit card. I really couldn't care less if people are tracking what I spend my money on. It's certainly not worth the effort of having to go to the ATM all the time to get money out.

If they are worth more than a penny, then why would anyone return them ?

If the government could produce them for less than a penny then they might even turn a profit.

Pennies are 97.5% zinc, and have been since 1982.

Why is everyone blaming and punishing the penny and not the practices since the penny was introduced that has made the penny so worthless and therefore a nuisance.

You mean inflation?

They don't know anything of the topic most likely.

so... you want deflation and to adjust the entire economy (risking major shocks) to make the penny valuable...

not just... remove it...?

They've bought into the idea that money is not a natural outgrowth of a market order but that it is rather a tool owned by the government to be used to accomplish the government's ends. They've bought into the government's story that continual debasement of the money is beneficial.

Actually, it is beneficial, but only to certain people.

Get rid of em. Heck I would not mind if they got rid of all coins, they are a damn damn nuisance weighing down my pockets and cluttering my car since after I buy something the first thing I do when I get in my car is offload the coins out of my pocket into the center console.

And while we are at it, stop trying to convert us into accepting and using $1 coins - if we have not took to repeated efforts to get them into circulation since the Susan B's back in 79 (Well Eisenhower preceded that, but I was too young to pay heed to those), we won't now just because they decide to make a different one.

I have been saying for some time now that we should ax the penny.

Its a nuisance. Round up or down to the nickel (venders would naturally round up, but so what, its a few pennies), and we get to stop fiddling with the damn things.
