By some traditions, the punishment/mark of Cain....was black skin.

Curse and mark of Cain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And again, some believe that the descendants of Ham, who was punished by God, became modern-day blacks.

So, since racism against blacks can sometimes be considered to be motivated by religion, should we be expected to have more tolerance for such beliefs...as a way of respecting religion?

some argue that since homophobia is sometimes motivated/excused by religion, homophobia should be tolerated as religious-expression. I want to know how far we should tolerate bigotry, as a form of religious expression.

Let haters hate, so long as they are not harassing, stalking, being violent, etc. No matter why they hate. Whether it's religion, simple xenophobia, or a bad experience as a child. Free speech is free speech.

It has nothing to do with respecting religion. It has to do with respecting the principal of American democracy - even when it's unpleasant.

i pretty much agree. as long as you aren't harrassing, stalking, or attacking others, you should be able to have your stupid beliefs and express them.

Racism is racism...regardless of the origin teaching racism. There comes a time in all our lives when we "all" should be able to recognize the social damage caused by all of the "isms"...along with all of the bigoted beliefs that people possess.

Unfortunately, when a person has been socialized as a racists either by family members, neighborhood, churches, schools...or whatever...and racism is supported or in some way reinforced. It's really difficult to erase those teachings and reinforcements in such people. They genuinely believe that such beliefs are normal, justified, reasoned out...logical.

It's sad. But it is what it is.

Nobody is biased free. But there's a difference between thinking bias and acting on those biases.

Bigotry is by far the more obvious than is racism, in my humble opinion.

some in this forum have argued that religion-based homophobia should be tolerated as the free-expression & free-exercise of faith. if that's the case..then why not religion-based racism?

But if these beliefs alter law makers decisions is it a good thing to let them hate?

What do you mean, should we tolerate?

As in, should we forbid people from speaking such things and throw them into prison if they do?

As in, should we pass laws making their beliefs a hate crime?

As in, should those who disagree with them be free to criticise their beliefs?

My answers are no, no and yes.

The problem with racist religions is they tend to be violent. We once had alot of white supremest where I live, they were burning crosses in yards, harassing blacks, Mexicans, Jews etc not to mention robbing banks to finance their hate so I say no, don't tolerate them. We didn't tolerate them here, they pretty much got run out on a rail.

We should tolerate all racist views regardless of origin. So long as one is not actually infringing upon the rights of others, they should be allowed to do as they want.

I'll check it out...I'm a fan of South Park. I'm sure I'll have to find an episode number.

Never mind...I found it...and watching it.

The actions that follow the racism is what makes the thought appalling. We all have areas where we are not so politically correct. Mine is easy I am strongly anti-religion and express it unkindly at times. I can be just as anti-religion as I want but when I express this in ways that are hurtful to others I have stepped over the line. It's not exactly racism but on the same level. Gay slurs are a form of this and when they become hurtful to others people need to draw a line. Feminism is attacked in the same way with words. Blacks have suffered word attacks in every way possible. We can all hold our tongue and be more civil to other. I do step over the line in the area of religion. I know better. When the actions turn to violence they are criminal.
Should we tolerate religious views that are racist. I don't think there is any reason to tolerate racism.

Personally, I'm somewhat intolerant of religion, generally. But I see your point, and it's a good one.

people are free to tolerate, or not tolerate, anything they wish.

personally, tolerate most beliefs... but I do not tolerate assholes.... I am openly intolerant, and sometimes even violent, to assholes.

The answer is absolutely yes, so long as the racism is expressed in speech as opposed to violence. Free speech is just that and racists like anyone else can petition the government for changes, as despicable as they may be.

This is also the best way to fight these kind of world views, some churches once preached racism but what ended that was a change in culture not in laws banning its practice. People eventually realized on their own that it was wrong and they will do the same for homosexuality. When people with strong opinions are pushed they tend to tighten up and push back, we don't want to fight them we want to ignore and dismiss them while still allowing them to say what they want.

I personally don't know of any religion that practices racism in this country unless it is radical Islam....Maybe someone could enlighten me. I know the Catholic Church I attend welcomes all races.
