Racism against Hispanics?

Is it racist to be bigoted rude/insulting against Hispanics?

Maybe the problem isn't so much how people meant it, as how people took it. I live somewhere where there's a large Mexican cultural influence. I see Mexican flags and bumper stickers and little pro-Mexico dangly things on rear view mirrors, and it's never occurred to me to take offense at any of it.

Why would you take offense to it? That makes zero sense.

That would be the gayest "Go Team" ever. Who knew republicans were such douchebags? I vow to never go to a sporting event with a republican. I don't want to be seen with the weird guy starting USA chants and trying to get people to say the National Anthem while Cam Newton is breaking out for a 40-yard touchdown run.

You guys can keep that ****.

What a profound sense of loss I feel.

I feel a profound sense of loss for you. I can't believe you are actually trying to pretend you don't see the situation. Toeing that party line must be pretty heavy on the arms, X.

Would we be having this debate if the other side was chanting the name of another country?

No, no, you win. Chanting USA is now exactly the same thing as chanting, "Heil Hitler"

So they were chanting USA because.....it was the olympics and the USA was playing Mexico? Wouldn't LeBron be there if that was the case?

I simply do not understand what they possibly could have been getting at -- except that the opposing team were of Mexican descent. Why are you cheering your teams victory by chanting USA? Unless you are a complete moron. It's the most inappropriate cheer I could think of short of singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" or clapping and saying "Yay, fooball!"

Agreed. It would make about as much sense for me to, for some reason, take offense at a chant of USA in the USA.

Just to clarify, were they chanting "I Hate Spics" or were they chanting "USA"?

The USA was not playing in that game. I guess I'll ask you this question as well:

Have you been to a sporting event before? LOL

Are you saying there was no ulterior motive for chanting USA, X? Are you saying if it was them vs a team of white players they would have still chanted USA?

I just think it's sad that a chant of USA, in the USA, results in an apology and punishment.

Right -- just like the wing-nut commentators who insist on referring to the President as Barack Hussein Obama are just using his full name.

When's the last time you saw a group of teenage sport boosters break into a chant like that when it was one primarily white American team defeating another primarily white American team?

That's one of the few things that would have possibly been more inappropriate.

White people are so persecuted. I can't understand how we made it so far.

Not sure if your going with sarcasm here or not?

I'd rather not assume and make an ass out of myself.

Again, as I did in the other thread. A primer, about how the same phrase can mean two different things:

At Disney on Ice, a father says to his daughter "Look at the fairies."

At the Gay Pride parade, someone shouts out "Look at the fairies."

Same phrase, two different meanings.

Why don't you tell me? You're going to give me **** about toeing the party line when you've said you don't even want to hang out with Republicans? LOL What Democrat party line have you not toed, ever? I tell you, at the very least, I don't take to bashing all liberals the way you do and have all conservatives.

I don't agree with indulging the notion that "USA" is synonymous with white supremacy or something.

I'm against Obama for keeping Guantanamo open, for continuing the Patriot Act (and this other new act that allows for detention of citizens). I hate extraordinary rendition. I think ObamaCare was a *****-out move and he should have gone for a full UHC system. Uhh, let's see, a small part of me wants to know if Bush should receive any credit for the Arab Spring (though I still think he was a dick for the way he took us to war with Iraq). I am definitely a liberal, I don't deny that.

Conservatives just seem so phony to me lately. Simple things like this, that couldn't be more obvious, somehow fly over their head. It's crazy to me. The school didn't apologize for no reason. It was inappropriate. What is so difficult about that?

*Edit:

Again, do you really think they would have chanted USA if it was an all white team vs an all white team?

I don't think the chant in and of itself is, but I think that it was invoked maliciously at that game, in much the same way as the President's middle name is by some.

Ok, well, believe about me what you will. I have a different opinion about this, but I guess you think only yours is genuine. I see no more point in continuing this with you.

And I just don't agree with acting as if a chant of "USA" is on par with chanting "Long live, Hitler" or something.

I am seriously interested if people think we would be having this debate if the tables were turned and they were chanting Mexico rather than USA. I don't think we would.

Man... cmon. Don't make me feel bad. You know it's hard to go from talking to extremists who defend Rush for calling Fluke a slut to people like you.

Way to Godwin. At any rate, you're acting as if I'm translating one into the other in all or even most circumstances. I'm not.

The meaning is circumstantial, just as you can say "have a nice day" and have it mean two entirely different things depending on the delivery and the circumstances.

From my point of view you are either an American or your not. I do not understand why some people today want to be identified by (race/ethnic background – American) rather than they are an American? American is a melting pot of people.

I feel the resentment by some towards Hispanics might come from the fact that the majority of illegal aliens in the country come from Mexico or other Latin American countries. Some people living in border States are growing tired of the issue in which the Federal government has ignored for years.

(and know it is not an attempt to keep the State “white”).

Do NOT get me started on the Rush situation. LOL. Can we agree that all of us, you included, could reasonably be perceived as "extreme" on some issues?
