The Republican Party controlled all three branches from 2001 to 2006, and the federal government only grew under their watch.

Furthermore, a big chunk of the public outrage over Guantanamo, the USA PATRIOT Act, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a whole host of other things evaporated as soon as Bush left office and Obama came in (IMO, anyway, we can debate over this too).

With these points in mind, do you think that the Tea Party will remain politically relevant if the Republicans win in 2012? Or will fiscal conservatism be relegated to the back of the bus once the GOP is in power?

The Tea Party will be relegated to the back of the bus until it's politically expedient to trot them out again. Then they'll suddenly reappear.

I HAD! To touch on this first. Those that were angry about those things are also very angry with President Obama. Also...the war in Iraq is ending and the war in Afghanistan is starting to finally have an end date.

Anywho....the Tea party movement...I think they will be relevant. I think the idea of using the primary system to challenge incumbents is a great way to keep Republicans feet to the fire. I don't know how much attention they will get from the big Conservative Print or TV media after winning. I guess it will be the true test as to whether it's an actual movement or has been completely co-opted by the Republican establishment.

I do think you won't hear near as much about them and it will entirely be up to those Tea Partiers to keep themselves relevant. I think money outside of actual Tea Partiers will dissapear and go back into the RNC machine.

Precisely, just as the (consistent) fiscal conservatives were angry at Bush. I see this as two problems: one, the Washington establishment ignoring the conservative and liberal base, and two, partisan, selective outrage on both sides of the aisle.

Also:
Barack Obama said:
I will promise you this, that if we have not gotten our troops out by the time I am president, it is the first thing I will do. I will get our troops home. We will bring an end to this war. You can take that to the bank.

"The Tea Party Movement" = Conservativism in resurgence. Until the Libbos have managed to destroy the basic fabric of this nation, Conservatism/The Tea Party Movement will always be relevant.

That would be the same with the OWS, which was a reflection of American Leftism. Yet, we still can make the argument that the OWS is surging or falling into irrelevance. The Tea Party Movement, so far as its message, platform, and organizations are concerned, those are tangible and capable of being popular or being irrelevant.

Yes. Just like the formerly apolitical religious or the unions, once the political party caters to a group, they will always be somewhat beholden to their wishes no matter how successful they become.

Yes, because if the Republicans continue on with fiscal irresponsibility the Tea Party will protest and hold them accountable.

Yes.

I don't really see a Tea Party party, per se; it's more of a movement of fed-up folks who are disgusted with "business as usual," one that's not organized on a national level.

The occutards lost what little credibility they ever had, however.

A better question is what happens if Barack Obama wins again. My guess is that you'll start to see even more automatic weapons and racist signs appearing at their 'rallies'.

But of course

I disagree, once there's an (R) in the White House, the Tea Party will go away. Except in local Congressional elections, and then in 4 years, they'll come out to protest the Democratic candidate.

Heh, if you think the Tea Party would be scary...imagine the Occupy movement after a GOP victory. Oh I forgot, they're only scary and uncivil if you disagree with their political platform.

Wiggen: Dangerous extremism? On MY side of the aisle?
Sane People: It's more likely than you think. ;)

Hmm- good question. It's my guess that fiscal conservatism *might* be relegated to the back of the bus, but otoh, there are many tea partiers who don't support republicans as a rule either.

Other:

The tea party never was relevant.

It was quite relevant. The Tea Party movement has been the primary force in getting people aware of our fiscal problems. Prior to their emergence on the scene, it was mostly just a few libertarians here and there who would dare say anything negative about our growing fiscal problem at the level of the federal government. Anyone who thinks this is not an important issue is hiding their heads in the sand.

It's relevant enough for the liberal media to foam at the mouth over it and for partisans to throw around sexual slurs to describe the movement.

How do you feel about OWS?

The tea party faction of the Republican Party has already made a major error in this election year allowing themselves to be placed in the position of a eunuch in a brothel doing little more than standing there and watching. That hurts their power and their influence and it will take lots of time and effort to turn that around. Political parties in presidential election years have one goal above all others and that is to take the White House. The tea party faction badly misplayed their hand and allowed their lack of national organization or leadership to leave them without a candidate. That only weakens them.

I think your analysis is premature. It's still early. There is a reason why Romney is not "inevitable." And we won't know who the Veep nom will be until one candidate is chosen. My only prediction is that if gas prices top $5, the incumbent will lose votes.

Any chance of the Central Government seeing the errors of their ways...and shutting down? I think the same question was once raised with the old Soviet Union Government. As we see...it was shutdown. Now the Russian Mafia runs the show. I don't think we want any Mafia running our show...and especially the Italian Mafia. Look at the mess they're in. Besides, the Pope has already had too many chances.

The Tea Party was never relevant...only a bump in the road for Boehner and his crew.

The tea party faction had its chance and they blew it opting to do nothing.

I agree, HM. The Tea Party Caucus thought they could walk into Congress and strong arm their way into a backdoor leadership role...and play heroes. It blew up in their face...and whats worse, they aren't getting a lot of their own membership, which I think would be publicly raising hell with the Republican Party members who have basically shunned the Tea Party members to show them really, really strong support.

The tea party wasn't relevant because they were just a bunch of republicans being controlled by corporate america...
