Because Rand is a new Republican Senator, and would be supporting an independent or Libertarian ticket. It would hurt his reputation. Get it now?
Honestly, I still don't get it. First off, Ron Paul will not seek a third party ticket as he didn't seek one in 2008. Second, Rand isn't afraid to go against the grain of big government republicans. For instance, Rand Paul recently wrote in the Des Moines register warning against voting against big government Republicans like Romney and Gingrich.
Rand Paul: Republicans would take a giant step backward by choosing Gingrich | The Des Moines Register | DesMoinesRegister.com
I don't buy into your analysis that Rand Paul will march lock-step as Republicans work hard to put another liberal republican on the GOP ticket.
