Before we go too far with this "mind reading", we should work on our spelling and grammar.
Also small print must be abolished. The print size used on that link was nearly unreadable.
Lets keep things in balance.
Also - no vote .
IMO, this poll is motivated by fear.

I've taken Mind Reading 101 probably thousands of time and failed each and every time.

IBM is behind time. My sixth sence telepathy can read your mind.

This would be GREAT. I can think of several major uses for it right off the bat....

1. Law Enforcement
2. Border Security
3. For the first time in history a Man might know what a woman is actually thinking (assuming that she is thinking, of course).

Sorry, pall, you must have understood by now that I'm not a native English speaker.
As to to the font size, check you browser settings.
Yes, this poll is motivated by fear and apparently for a reason (see below).

I sincerely think you should stay away from power as far as possible. ;)

Meh, been there, done that. All the men think about is sex, all the women think about is sex.
Mind reading will be like watching a 24/7 porn movie that never ends

My goodness!

IBM says: mind reading is no longer a science fiction
I don't even want to think what the abuse of this technology could do! The Thought Police is no longer a nightmare, it's getting real. :(

What do you think?

At this point in time the gadget doesn't do much... allow you to choose this or that option, with much concentration and a bulky headset.

To think that within 5 years there will be a ballcap-sized widget that reacts when we wonder about traffic and displays GPS traffic data is very optimistic. To think it is going to result in privacy-invading mind-reading anytime real soon is probably much too dramatic.

Having said that.... yes, there's a lot of research on how to do away with the keyboard and mouse and control the computer with your mind. It will happen someday... I wouldn't be surprised if it was commonplace by 2030. That doesn't mean the same thing as a "mind-reading machine".

Lemme splain.... if you type your honest innermost thoughts out on a keyboard and post them to the Internet, then you just put your thoughts out there for the world to "read". However, the keyboard cannot read your mind without your cooperation.

I expect mental-control-of-computers will be similar, in that a certain amount of effort will be involved and the device will not be able to simply "read your innermost thoughts" on its own.

Right now there are some bulky MRI-like devices that can (with varying reliability) detect certain broad mental states, like fight-or-flight anxiety... there was a story about HomeLandSec working on such a thing with an eye towards airline screening. Again, going from there to something that can actually *read your thoughts* is a big leap anytime in the next 50 years.

At this point, IMO this is a molehill.... no need to make a mountain of it.

Considering the mind's processes are just electrically firing neurons, was "mind-reading" even that far-off of an idea the begin with? Ever heard of neuroimaging?

Hell no I would not approve of it. We would just one blatant misinterpretation of the constitution for law enforcement to abuse it.And since the constitution does not apply to private companies nothing would stop them using such technology to read the minds of their employees and potential applicants.

Too much potential for abuse. Give them (gov't) an Atomic bomb and they use it to kill. Give them mind reading and soon enough it will be corrupted to kill. Our military budget is over $700 billion per year. Doesn't that explain wars for business, fun, and profit. Mind reading for business, fun and profit to follow.

Again, more anti-corporate rantings.
There were probably more than 100000 atomic, nuclear, thermonuclear, and hydrogen bombs in the world. Of that many, 2 were used, the weakest atmoic bombs, and when an impossible invasion that would have taken about 4 years to prepare for was imminent, and when millions of casualties was predicted. Again, demonstrating your ignorance.

the brain-electronic interface holds a lot of potential, as well as ethical dilemmas. my interest is more in the upload of data to the brain rather than the download of data from the brain, however.

learning could be significantly optimized through electronics; most likely, it would be much more efficient through an interface. however, would this interface be available to all people, or just those who could afford it? if not, there might be a whole new class of intelligence that is linked to socioeconomic status, widening the inequality gap even further. and intelligence isn't always used for good.

it's certainly possible within the next 100 years or so, and it's fascinating to consider the possibilities.

I've read claims there is success in developing the true unbeatable lie detector using a CAT scan. They claim the the memory is one part of the brain and reasoning another. Thus a person telling the truth is primarily activating his/her memory while a lie will more activate reasoning.
If a court upheld the pure accuracy, this could open the door to lie detector tests being admissable or even possibly required of witnesses.
Does that make you nervous? Or would you approve?

Everything has the potential to be a negative. I think the benefits would far outweigh the negatives if it's possible.

We've had the thought police for some time, it just came under the guise of PC. We have re-education camps and everything for making people believe the way we want them to believe.

As for thought police coming from this; if we stay on present course it will develop rapidly. In some guise of fighting terrorists. TSA would get something like this.

I see, and agree 100%; the "very conservative" are scary..
I sincerely think you should stay away from power as far as possible. ;)
This reply is probably messed up, to a degree...

The government?
NO, its us, you and I.
In truth, "man" .
I have a hell of a lot more faith and trust in my government that "man"..

If you dont' trust anyone you'll be better off.

Do I sense negativity or ignorance? Just a few hundred thousand dead Japanese. A million dead Vietnamese. A hundred thousand plus Iraqis. Did I forget to mention No Gun Ri? And who knows what else?

How could the benefits of the complete violation of your privacy possibly outweigh the negative?

Both negativity and ignorance exist, even here..
But, Dave, exactly what are you trying to say ?
That these millions of deaths are the result of man not caring ??

If you don't' trust anyone you'll be better off.
I have been burned by trusting those "untrustworthy" (lawyers, merchants (some), those people drowning in hatred and fear).
But, I'd sooner be dead than go thru-out life without trusting anyone...
A good judge, I am not....
Now, this "mind reading device", a first step....but man has a lot of catching up to do...I think the technology is way ahead of him...
