Do you support term limits

Term Limits

The only thing that irks me about instituting term limits is that some people are incumbents for a reason - they do a good job. Sure we'd be throwing out a lot of garbage, but would we be replacing it with garbage, and would we be replacing our valuable seats with garbage as well?

I would be okay with that.

In general you need some amount of protection from popularism; otherwise we could never keep SCOTUS justices around too long; which is why I would set the value very high, certainly over 75%. I think 80 or so is about right. I just think there should be a method through which the People can exert control; particularly over the Judiciary which has assumed MASSIVE powers over the centuries.

Well, I don't think the judiciary has as much power as they are criticized for having. After all, while they may make a ruling, it is up to the executive and the legislature to follow that ruling. For example, Andrew Jackson absolutely ignored the Supreme Court when it ruled that the government relocation of the Seminoles was unconstitutional. Also, while SCOTUS ruled that segregation was unconstitutional in 1954 desegregation wasn't fully implemented until, I would say, the late 70's.

So while SCOTUS has the power of judicial review what tends to happen is that their rulings do not become entrenched in the U.S. legal system by the President and Congress until quite some time after those rulings.

And I'm more concerned with the rulings made by lower court judges than I am the Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Hey, I've got an idea! Let's just have things called elections to determine which incumbents to get rid of and which ones we should keep!

Oh, wait...

So you support removing term limits from the President?

I absolutely support term limits, the American electorate are demonstrated idiots who cannot collectively make informed, rational, intelligent decisions. They vote from the gut, not the facts and decades of poor education has made them sheep, easy to manipulate with sound bites and flashy commercials. So long as that is the case, so long as they will vote for the incumbent just because it's the only name on the ballot they recognize, we need to keep moving these shyster lifetime politicians out of office, at the very least to keep new, uncorrupted blood moving in. Once these guys are in office long enough, they care more about feathering their own nest than serving the public interest they were elected to do.

Throw 'em all out. We can't do any worse than we already are.

Term limits are not a restriction on the power of government. Term limits are a restriction on the power of the people.

Let's settle the issue of whether they belong in Congress first.

Do you mean settle it in the voting aspect or in regards to answering in this thread.

If the former, then you support allowing something that is "idiotic by definition" and is for "sore losers who don't like the fact that they keep losing elections" to simply continue because people are talking about it in another aspect of government? You're fine with something that is "anti-democratic" to continue to happen? After all, don't term limits just "take away the choice from the voters"? So you're in favor of continuing to allow people to "overrule the will of a majority of voters" simply because people are talking about it with regards to congress? This seems very odd and, by your own definition, seemingly anti-Democratic. But, even if that's the case....IF it was settled with regards to Congress, THEN would you still oppose it being in place for the president?

Now, if its for the latter and you're saying you want to settle the issue IN THREAD first...how about you actually deal with what this thread is about which is Term Limits for ALL of government, not just "Congress first".

Who the hell do you think you are telling them how they should vote?

Why hold back? If this is true, why do you even want to allow them to vote at all? Simply call for abolishing elections altogether.

You are a smart one. Almost as smart as I am. ;)

Okay, fine. I think there's a huge difference between 535 little members of Congress and the most powerful office on the planet. But if you force the issue, I'll take getting rid of term limits on the President.

Who the hell do you think you are telling them how they should vote?

I'm not telling them how they should vote, I'm telling them they should be INFORMED. Until they are, they're more dangerous voting than not voting.

Bull. A limit on terms is about limiting the vote, not information.

When they can prove they're making an informed decision, then we can get rid of term limits. So long as the American people are largely idiots, they haven't earned that right.

For the president only ..... and this is a change from my past stances on this..... I think the president should be elected for one term of 6 years .. I say this because any president elected now, takes 6 months to get settled into office ... then spends the last year an a half of his first term campaigning for re-election .. then the two years he is doing anything to try to run the country is compromised by him making all popular choices that will help him get re-elected rather then making choices that are good for the country. I think this is why usually we see far more getting done in a presidents 2nd term.

A single 6 year term would eliminate most all of that ..

When someone has no argument except to call everyone idiots, they are done.

Oh, and if you think the voters are idiots, why let them vote at all?

A great big Yes on this one. Give them one term with no bennies and no retirement. Also no public funding. They want to serve...prove it.

No to any kind of term limits. Repeal the presidential term limit requirement. If we get someone good into office, we should be able to keep him if we choose. If someone does a lousy job, vote him out.
