Tucker I'm not going to answer all your parsing and suppositions of my comments because frankly it sounds like a lot of gobbledegook too me. I think you miss the forest through the trees.
Definition Conform:
1. Comply with rules, standards, or laws.
2. (of a person) Behave according to socially acceptable conventions or standards: "the pressure to conform".

You can say choice, coward and victim-mentality till the rocks fall out of your ears but you still have conformed. Whether by choice or pressure we all have done it.

People don't need conscious sound and logical thought processes in order to engage in choice making. In fact, very few people do engage in sound, logical thinking prior to making choices. That doesn't mean they aren't making choices, though. It just means they aren't fully aware of their thought processes.

Here's your quote that makes my point. People are rarely fully aware of all our choices, especially the ones we are conforming too. It's an almost mindless process sometimes. I'm not a wizard with grammar or the sharpest bulb in the tool shed but I know when someones using circle logic,, duhhh. I have an overly educated friend with 15yrs of college who likes to grade my emails for grammatical errors. He thinks its funny. So when we're in the company of others I mispronounce words on purpose when telling a story so he'll continually correct me to look smart. Then I ask him "can you tell me the point of my story"? He ends up staring at me blankly because he was too focused on my mispronunciation. My point Tucker even an idiot can make you look stupid when they pull your pants down.. he's showing his heiny :2razz:

You have brains and manners Bodhisattva,, bravo!

Ah, I see. So you are illiterate. If you want, I can rewrite it using simpler words so that you can understand it. I have a small child so I'm used to dumbing down my language.

The issue is not the definition of conform. It is the definition of force.

I like to pretend I'm retarded too, sometimes. That way, when I actually do something stupid I can cravenly pretend I did it on purpose so that I don't have to admit that I made a mistake. ASk Bodhisattva, I never admit to making mistakes.

You are pretty sharp Tuck for picking up on the tard aspect ;) I'll concede you made some good points but I was never really pushing for forced to conform. I meant it in the context of "pressure" but I think you really knew that. Like a young pine tree you'll learn to bend with the wind instead of break like a stiff old oak. I don't conform out of fear as much as out of desire for peace. I grew up with nasty rednecks that would beat on you like a screen door in a hurricane, so I learned a little about conformity. I think we become more aware of PC when it's trivial, annoying or downright absurd and that's the stuff I feel inclined to not conform with. But then again I don't poke a hornets nest for fun either, so live and let live.

If you meant pressure rather than force, then I don't have any issue with your position. There is pressure to conform in society, but ultimately that's just a part of living in a society.

The reason I go hard after the idea of it being forced, though, is because i think that that word implies victimization, and I believe that we have a major problem in our society with the victim-mentality, right now. Since I now see that you were not trying to imply that, we have no disagreement.

So that's the bee that got stuck in your bonnet. I didn't think you were one of those I'll pound ya into submission types. I agree we're rarely forced to do anything, even obey the law. Though I'll leave you with a wee bit of parting advice, my father once told me "see it from their side or walk a mile in their shoes". To distinguish between a true victim and someone leveraging the system or playing you give an unbiased and true look at their situation and put yourself there. I bet you'll see a picture you never knew was there.

Stare at the four dots in the center of this picture for the count of 30, then look away to a white wall or piece of paper. Be patient and wait a few seconds then tell me what you saw?
If you've already seen this then you know the point.

The issue with "oriental" is that it's Eurocentric-- "orient" is Latin for "east". Hell, they're west of America.

As far as PC goes, if I know someone, I call them what they prefer to be called. I'm only PC with people I don't know.
Asians, Orientials... how can it matter ?
The idea is to be respectful, referring to others as n******* or c********* or "them", is NOT respectful.
And PC is, IMO, silly !
To add - I respect the Chinese, Vietnamese,ect...
I do not respect the conservatives , so for "them", its "tea-baggers"...this, I know is not right....

Sounds like your friend wasted 15 years of college...

Showing Tucker a heiny is just the beginning of some really good entertainment...

I was wondering if that was your issue... pressure rather than force. And I agree to your points in this and the other post. Good thoughts...

Yeah, that was my sentiments exactly but his education makes him knowledgeable just not better than me.

I'm gonna have to agree with sangha it could be a form of birth control,,,, muhahaha

Which team is that?

More knowledgeable in some areas but not all. I know that I have two degrees and a Masters and I know basically nothing about the dairy industry and the high school drop outs here that make more money than I do could talk circles around me about the industry, international dealings with Fonterra and China, etc.

If only controlling his offspring was that easy...

Retaining information doesn't always equate with the ability to think, wisdom or understanding. I can look up most any information someone else has learned, on the internet but I can't replicate experience. I guess we all have some unique combination of knowledge and insight that others may not. Like my profession was based in optics and I'm not sure how that Jesus illusion works. Something probably to do with the rods and cones of the retina and latent light stimulation on the optic nerve, causing the high contrast negative image to reverse into a positive. I know you can figure which eye you have is dominant by poking a hole through a piece of paper, then line up an object at some distance (20 ft) with both eyes open looking thru the hole. Now with the hole still lined up on the object close each eye one at a time. Whatever eye still sees the object is your dominant eye and the one you used to see the object with first. Though we have two eyes, one eye transmits the image to the brain first, while the other lays a separate image over the first to give the brain depth of vision and binocular sight. The retina actually sees images upside down like a mirror in a camera but the brain turns them right side up. Boring for others fascinating too me,, lol.

One of my fears,, knock-knock-knock.. who's there? Hi daddy you never knew me.

Just sent the Jesus image question to someone I know who works electro optics and detectors for digital imagery to see if he knows...

One of my fears,, knock-knock-knock.. who's there? Hi daddy you never knew me.

I have wondered from time to time... but being out of the country for so long now? They could never find me. Not that I had a bunch of one-nighters, but a enough.

If you said Lakers I would have fallen for you immediately...

No way the '83 Celtics rule! Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson. Though Kareem, Magic, James Worthy, Byron Scott, even Kurt Rambis were good.

Yeah, I'm curious let me know.

That's funny. But even once can be too much. I saw an ex a couple years after we broke up with a toddler that had my hair and eye color, yikes.

LAKERS!!!

Screw the Celtics.

I am fairly confident that there are no little me's running around that I don't know about... but you never know. I knew a woman that found a guy she thought looked good and had whatever qualities she wanted and slept with him a bunch to get pregnant and then dumped him. He only found out he was a father a year later or so when she hit him up for child support. She also went out of her way to make sure he could get as little custody as possible by having this "not invovled at all" case against him.

anyway... back to the fun stuff!

Basically. It works off of the opponent-process theory. The cones become overstimulated from staring at the image so that they create a "rebound" effect of the opposite signal after the image is removed. When done with color images it can be used to make the point that colors are actually created by our visual processes rather than being something that exists outside of teh realm of perception (which is an argument I make often).

I think I just stumbled across an explanation of how this works scrolling by on the spy page.

Yep, that's how that one works too. It has a bit to do with how our eyes compensate for micro-movements of the eye, too.

And I've seen a few good one's that do that same type of trick.

Watch this one for a little while as it alternates between a negative and black and white. Eventually you start seeing colors (I bet the effect is even better for people with normal color vision.)

:lamo You're literally hurting my head but at least it's fun! Ok, what was the original point you're making? Oh that's right you don't feel forced to conform or be an outcast. Really I'm not trying to twist your words so much as understand your position on PC. I think when you say "I don't feel forced to conform and haven't since high school" is what you believe but it's possible that you have in some form and not been completely aware that you were bending? I don't think you mean an absolute to every conceivable situation. I remember a song by the group Rush called "Subdivisions" that sort of addressed this topic, so I'm not alone in my presumption. And actually we're all an original as far as being unique really hope there aren't two of me. But I think PC or anti-PC is worse than anytime I remember in the past and I'm not much of a fan.

You haven't been twisting his words. That's just how he debates. As soon as he gets backed into a corner, he automatically accuses his opponent of "twisting his words." Or he calls them a liar. His position on political correctness is as illogical as Bill Clinton's definition of the word "is." On one hand, he doesn't "feel the need to conform" and yet some how that's different from not conforming. Don't worry about it. Your position is sensible and easily understood.

Personally, I don't care if other people want to be PC. As long as they don't expect me to go along with it.

Lakers = Fakers

Bird was the real deal, especially feeding the "post-up" shots, passes behind the back and popping 3 pointers all day!

Geez,, that really happens too others than me.. lol. My last partner to a tee. TG no child support yet.

Color perception is somewhat known but still a theory. It's similar to the theory of light travel, is it in waves, particles or both? We don't have based on our limitations the ability to explain it yet. Our concept of reality is confined to our biological ability to perceive and imagine. Is the universe really only what we perceive or something altogether more or different? For example "if a tree falls in a forest and no creature is around does it make a sound"? I say it makes the disruption of the air creating the percussive waves necessary to make noise but until an ear has perceived it no sound has been made. Meaning that our inaction with the universe changes it's very nature and that perception is everything.
