Protesters pledge 'block party' will shut down Wall Street

Mayor dismisses threatened day of action

Protesters hope to shut down Wall Street on Thursday by holding a street carnival to mark two months since the start of their campaign against economic inequality.

Protest organizers acknowledged the "day of action" they have planned could be the group's most provocative yet, and could lead to mass arrests and further strain relations with city authorities.

"I think we're certainly going into this with our eyes wide open, but (the march is) to provoke ideas and discussion, not to provoke any violent reactions," said the Occupy Wall Street spokesman, Ed Needham. "It is very difficult to do a day of action and not expect some sort of reaction" from the authorities.

Snip

"We will shut down Wall Street," a post on the movement's Facebook page said. "We will ring the People's Bell, and initiate a street carnival in which we rebuild and celebrate the neighbourhoods that the Wall Street economy has destroyed."

The group promises "a block party the one per cent will never forget."

I heard about these plans only today and I'm curious who thinks planning to "shut down Wall Street" is a good idea? I don't. I think it'll only make their movement look bad. They're obviously looking to provoke a reaction. That's my opinion, what do you think? Do you support this idea?

A better question, Do you support Wall Street in everything they do?

Even if one didn't support everything that occurred on Wall Street, that doesn't mean you should support illegal tactics to "shut it down."

I think the idea is hilarious and audacious. I don't think it's going to accomplish much but it will be entertaining to watch. Nonetheless, I hope they succeed.

Interesting action if it happens. One has to ponder, "What goal is served by shutting down traffic/commerce on Wall Street??".

You get the attention of politicians. They want to keep their seats. They will act if they know the people are furious.

Where exactly is the hilarity here? It would just be creating chaos/disruption (and costing the city and commerce a lot of money).

Either it won't do much, or the cops will shut it down for blocking traffic. If things get out of hand, the movement will probably be more alienated from the public. Some of these protestors need to learn the difference between civil disobedience and making an ass out of one's self.

I relish chaos on Wallstreet. It's full of crooks and institutions that have taken trillions in bailouts after they created the very situation that caused the economic downturn in the first place. Their aggravation is my entertainment.

I also find the persistence of the OWS movement entertaining. Did people honestly believe that disbanding the camps would stop the protesting? These people are ready to protest straight through winter.

I am not really sure if I care one way of the other if they shut down Wall Street. It would be interesting to see what would happen if they did.

I will say that planning a street carnival is rather apt, given that the whole movement is starting to come off as a giant circus.

Maybe. But that wouldn't be my first guess. My suspicion is that there would/will be more reaction/outrage from those New Yorkers who see a group of radical outsiders interrupting the flows of the city.

Civil Disobedience can be a good/useful tool. Disruption of society just for the sake of chaos is simply a bunch of idiots acting like idiots.

I don't see how anyone can support OWS. I can understand standing up against corporate greed and corporate involvement in government... But acting like children and throwing a tantrum isn't the way to stand up for those ideals.

We'll see if it's possible and what their commitment to their protest is.

That's exactly the goal of many of them. They want to collapse the system.

Who cares? In two months they've been unsuccessful in forming any kind of cohesive organization with a clear unwavering message. First thing, they picked a stupid name. Should've given it more thought. Anyhow, they've become irrelevant.

OWS is still getting an amount of coverage around the country. But for the most part it seems to be more focused on the novel or the negative. And winter weather is not going to be in their favor.

Really think there was some positive message that could have come out of the early activity. But also believe there was an element of the original organizers whose main interest was in just old fashion "Late '60s chaos". Which has a short shelf life.....

I'm starting to think that the only way for OWS to "win" support is for them to call themselves Branch Davidians and start killing cops and DEA agents. Maybe that will get them the support of Conservative hacks.

Their original outrage was misplaced. I think that's what most Conservatives see. Banks are boogy-men? Wall Streeters are boogy-men? Hardly. They operate within the law. It is the job of Congress to even the playing field...it's their job to pass rules and regulations that prevent the abuse we've seen. It's their job to investigate the abuses that have occurred. Rallying your cause around $5/month fees for this/that bank services and Wall Street greed is ridiculous. Hard for conservatives to support an attack on capitalism. Congress!! Get your heads out of your butts and do something!

God no! Don't call yourself the Branch Davidians, the government will hole you up in some building and set fire to it.

if you mean Wall Street, between the Hudson & the East River, I could care less.

if you mean the stock exchanges, that is impossible...nor is it their plan.

Absolutely not. I recalled seeing an article from Wired, which tried to connect them to the Free Speech Movement in Berkeley. If it was a proper comparison, so is Nathan Glazer's condemnation of a movement he at first supported:

"The student radicals come from the fields that have a restricted and ambiguous place in a contemporary society. They remind me more of the Luddite machine smashers than the Socialist trade unionists who achieved citizenship and power for workers. This is why the universities stand relatively unchanged-because despite their evident inadequacies the student radicals have as yet suggested nothing better to replace them with."

I think their time came and went. At first, it was a great concept. Now it's just a joke. They need to go home.

Didn't Rage Against the Machine get Wall Street to close early or something once?
