The wealthy have a moral obligation to help those who are less well off. But even if they didn't have that obligation, it would still be in their best interest to endorse a moderate amount of government redistribution of wealth to keep the imbalance from growing too large.

In the early '30s there was a real danger that either a Russian style socialist revolution would sweep over America, or America would descend into fascism in the attempt to suppress that threat. The main reason neither of those things happened was because of the New Deal. Economists will debate forever whether the New Deal did anything to ameliorate the Great Depression, but the redistribution of wealth that it represented took the wind out of the sails of the growing socialist movement. It's why Germany got Hitler and you didn't.

Only the wealthy have obligations? Why does the poor not have moral obligations as well? Why should anyone endorse any theft of property from one individual or company whether it is by a government, another company or individual ? Are you sure the main reason we got neither a Russian style revolution nor a Hitler was the New Deal and not the fact that we were a religious and moral nation instead ?

They do? Why? I am failing to see why the wealthy have a moral obligation to help those who don't want to work as hard....

But even if they didn't have that obligation, it would still be in their best interest to endorse a moderate amount of government redistribution of wealth to keep the imbalance from growing too large.
So..... what does that teach younger generations? You can be a drug abusing bum and let those who make the decision to work hard take care of you? Why not a message of personal responsibility rather than a message that support bumming and freeloading?

If you say so.

Greed is a psychological problem. It can be prevented on a human basis.

You're talking around my question. How does society eliminate greed?

The current system. How about we establish a radical democracy that places people's lives under their own control -- a non-racist, classless, feminist, socialist society in which people cooperate at work, at home, and in the community?

What would be done then with those who are unable to control themselves? Those who are able-bodied but refuse to work, preferring instead to play the system? In your Utopia how would "cooperation" be carried out?

And why in the world would you want a feminist society?

What I don't understand about what they did (or wanted to do) today....why would they want to occupy the subways? How does that help in the battle against the 1%?

Ignoring that the "99%" use the subways every day, you can figure on a rich guy being there sometime.

Oh the Left's utopian spirit never seems to look back only a short 40-50 years, or before that. It doesn't work that well, for that long. That's why.

Are you thoroughly sick of all things to do with Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Whatever? Pro and anti? Tired of hearing about it, tired of arguing about it, tired of the overhyped mega-partisanship?

I'm tired of hearing about it and don't want to debate it anymore. Everyone has their entrenched position and just spews venom at the other side. It's pointless.

What say you? Tired of hearing about it yet?

I'm tired of hearing about the latest criminal activity some hippy committed in one of the "camps".

By putting everyone on a level playing ground, so that we are all equal.

And how does society put everyone on level playing ground so that we're all equal?

P J O'Rourke had a good take on this:

Yes, it's upsetting that some people have so much while other people have so little. It isn't fair. But I accept this unfairness. Indeed, I treasure it. That's because I have a 13-year-old daughter And that's all I hear, "That's not fair," she says. "That's not fair! That's not fair!" And one day I snapped, and I said, "Honey, you're cute, that's not fair. Your family is pretty well off, that's not fair. You were born in America, that's not fair. Darling, you had better get down on your knees and pray that things don't start getting fair for you."

O'Rourke: If the 1% had less, would the 99% be better off? | Marketplace from American Public Media

I'm really beginning to wonder if people aren't protesting just to protest. Today, I understand that they tried to shut down the NYSE. Exactly what would that do other than seriously throw a wrench into any economic growth? Unfortunately, most of the money that is made in this country these days is made by moving other money around. That's pretty much what got us here, but bankrupting everyone isn't going to fix that. I assume they have some kind of bank account -- do they know how the bank makes its money? It ain't off of fees.

There are serious sins in the financial sector. I'm certainly not in favor of just turning the other way, or actually making them easier to commit. I just don't know what anyone's trying to accomplish anymore. OWS is not going to bring back economic growth by shutting things down. Demonizing them is also not solving anything. I'm about this close to saying "**** all of you, I'm moving to Nunavut."

And how does society put everyone on level playing ground so that we're all equal?

Society has lead us astray from the truth that we are all equal as humans beings, whether we are white, black, male or female.
If we want to be treated as equals our current society is not a good place to be.

Do you realize you haven't answered the damn question? Do you even have any clue what you're even talking about?

You probably already know, hon, there's a certain category of folks who love to protest and shout slogans that sound high-and-mighty... like "level playing field" and "equality for all".... but if you ask them how to actually implement such a society they've got nothing, nada, zip.... it's all ivory tower opium smoke.

many folks at OWS have already claimed that they do NOT need goals, an agenda, nor demands.

those things are just used to "box people in".

;)

What question?

What actual laws, actions, proceedures, policies, rules, regulations or other things OTHER than just talk, would you implement in order to bring about this utopia upon which you pontificate?

In other words, how you gonna get there, bub? **** don't just happen by itself 'cuz someone started a drum circle.

By putting everyone on a level playing ground, so that we are all equal.

Okay.... So we get a field.... and we make sure it is level by having it surveyed to ensure that no end is lumpier or higher than the other............

Then what?

How has society lead us astray that we are all equals?

I don't believe that.........
These days people like to use their minority race or female gender as a crutch when it benefits them most.... I despise these people, they are moreso the problem than those who are actually sexist or racist.

But... that has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the question you have been asked and still have not answered outside of ignorant catch phrases and slogans.
