I like him. He is a good guy. I wish men like him ran prisons all over the country. thanks to pro-scumbag groups trying to demonize the man they unintentionally made him popular and shown that it is legal to have inmates work in chain gangs, feed them bologna sandwiches, live in tents, only have two channels of cable tv to watch and no cental heat or air. And he cracks down on illegal immigration. You should have made this a public poll, I suspect scumbag sympathizers and even some pro-Sheriff Joe Arpaio will try to doctor the poll.

Arpaio is a complete disaster. Contrary to what the news media says, the real action is not in his jail or immigration policy, but in local corruption. Joe's office has engaged in blatantly abusive behavior going back more than a decade. You get misspent taxpayer payer dollars, trumped up charges on political enemies, illegal campaign funding and ethical violations all over the place. Arpaio's subordinates and associates have already been dismissed and are now before the court. Arpaio is now at the stage where he switches between claiming he doesn't remember or saying it was all his underlings fault. I do believe in the concept of innocent until proven guilty. However, the evidence against the Sheriff's office is clear. Joe was either complicit or is so hideously incompetent he didn't notice rampant corruption among his direct subordinates.

A US district court judge ruled in 08 and 10 that the Maricopa County jails violated the constitutional rights of the inmates.
He refused to cooperate with the Department of Justice when he was accused of discrimination and unconstitutional search and seizures.
Judge John Leonardo of Pima County Superior Court found that Arpaio "misused the power of his office to target members of the (Board of Supervisors) for criminal investigation."
He has a long long list of targets that he targeted with his abuse of power.
He violated the election law.
Misused over 100 million in funds.
The Munnel Memo exposed him and his second in command on years of misconduct.
 
I've lived in AZ since '55. Winters only lately. So Joe A. has made himself noteworthy for some time. He is bacially a jerk in my opinion. He applies the law in a way that is not suportaable in a rational court, but is popular with some. He has also done some marginaly legal and even illegal things.
 
I think he's basically a good guy who believes in what he's doing. He's also a bit of an Attention Whore, who enjoys preening for the camera. So... :shrug:
 
Dammit. Wrong sheriff. I put good guy. I thought the poll was for the other sheriff that said people should get permits to carry guns. Oops.

Yes, imo, Joe A. likes attention. Yet he makes it clear where he stands on issues. Goes after identity theft crimes, drugs, etc.
I have lived in AZ since 89. Maricopa county supervisors are not as clean and innocent as the news would have you believe. I support Joe A. more than I do the county supervisors.

I don't think the kind of prison reforms he advocates are the kind of prison reforms we need.
 
I don't know him personally, so I can't answer the question. I certainly would not judge a person in this fashion based solely on their political views.
 
dunno enough about him. IIRC sheriff is an elected position, so if the folks in Arizona want to keep him in power, or throw him out, it's completely up to them.
 
Arpaio doesn't in the slightest bit work to uphold the constitution that he's supposed to be protecting. He tries some new way to ignore the 4th, 5th, and 6th amendments every other week. He's a disgrace to the law enforcement profession.

As to the prison stuff... Punitive justice is not only cruel, it's ineffective. He's making society less safe by his actions.

Thats basically it. Scumbag sympathizers do not like him so every accusation and negative rumor about the man they see as true. Funny how these scumbag sympathizers accuse him of doing all this stuff but he hasn't been convicted yet.
 
I live here in Arizona myself and I can say, from an insiders view, he is an ass. He cost this state so much. So much. Tent city is disgracefull. Disgracefull. You are there if you cannot afford bail and have not been convicted of ANYTHING other than not being able to afford bail. He is such a media whore, he will do anything to get his name out. ANYTHING.

He literally treats dogs better than humans and he is sickening. How does he continually get re elected? There are some seriously stupid voters here.

MACE violated the law, especially when they were made bogus charges against Judge Donahoe. Arpaio's statements in court admits that the actions taken by MACE were wrong, his defense is that we wasn't aware of what was going on and blamed everything on Hendershott.
So there you have it, by his own testimony the "toughest Sheriff" is so incompetent that he can't even notice criminal behavior from his direct subordinates. He also has admitted to misplacing 100 million dollars, blaming it on a computer error.

Joe response to the illegal actions of his Chief deputy and lead prosecutor was the "I don't recall" line. In the spirit of innocent until proven guilty, let take him at his word and assume he really didn't know. Do you really think someone who can't even spot years of illegal activities done in public by own his department is fit to be a Sheriff?
 
Whats really interesting here is that people still can't seem to get him on charges of racial profiling. So now they seem to be taking a different tact. Smearing him by blaming him for some other persons actions.

Cops in the same department normally do not investigate thier fellow cops. It normally takes investigation done by an outside source like the FBI, DA, or Internal Services. Which is understandable as cops normally have to have the same kind of trust in thier fellow cops as someone who is in the military must have the same kind of trust in thier mates.
 
A little of both. I like some of the things he's done to try to save the state's prison system money, and I dislike others. I like that he wants to do something about illegal immigration, but for the most part I dislike what he's doing about it.

If you wanted political opinions specifically, why did you ask a question that had nothing to do with politics?

I would ask a political question in order to get political opinions, myself. Makes more sense that way.
