So something that annoys me is that a lot of times you will find an Old Glory made from China. I think there needs to be a law that the USA flags sold in USA come only from the USA. If say France, Japan, Germany, etc had similar rules about their flags would only make sense, it is a symbol of national pride afterall. So yes or no? Why or why not?

I don't really care where flags are made to be honest. I find the near worship that some people in America have for the flag to be a biit weird personally.

If it's important enough to someone that US flags be made in the US, they have the option to support only US flag-producing companies (how many could there possibly be?). Drafting, debating, passing and enforcing such a law just isn't worth the effort.

If they are going to be used by the government and military then yes they should only buy American made flags seeing how the government should not encourage outsourcing. If a private individual wishes to buy a foreign made flag then sure, but it should be in big bold letters made in China(or what ever other country) on the package.

I would like to see nearly everything possible used in America made in America... and that includes the flag.

Stars and stripes should be made in USA period. Countless American men, boys really have died to protect the freedoms it represents. Having the flag made in a totalitarian, fascist, communist state such as China is like pissing on their graves.

Anybody who says they should be mandated to be made only in the US doesn't understand the concepts of freedom and capitalism, IMO. However, having said that, this is one item in particular that I as an individual American am serious about and I am willing to search further and longer, and even pay a bit more if necessary, to buy a US-made flag.

I agree with this. As seriously as I take our country, the whole flag worship thing sometimes crosses over into idol worship, IMO.

I completely agree, we've sold our sovereignty to other nations in the world by buying finished goods from them. Sad.

Doesn't matter.

Just what we need. One.More.Law.

Yes, it is a symbol of national pride. The flag. Not where it's made.

If only America made American flags, where would the grateful citizens of countries you save get flags to wave at the arriving troops?

From there country. My question was American flags made in America should or shouldn't only come from America. I will do everyone one better--not only will they be American made but sales tax free and make it part of a package deal law where product made in America is tax free as well.

I believe we are a free market society, I voted no.

We have a flag manufacture just down the street, and this company makes sure that every service flag and the U.S. flag are placed over the overpass on I-95 near were this plant is located. I really nice touch to this is that no one has stolen or vandalized these flags since 2001, and when these flags get weathers then the flags are replaced with new ones.

No. Who cares where it comes from? If you view the flag as a symbol of national pride and don't want to buy a Chinese-made American flag, then don't buy one. Leave me out of it. Protectionism is almost always a horrible idea.

So you would pledge to a flag made by the Chinese? It isn't protectionism, it's about having some dignity and respect for your country and knowing the man or woman making that flag has respect for it as well. Flags are not a mass produced thing like say a Xbox or an iPod; there is a reason why we make those in China. Flags are a totally different story.

I wouldn't pledge allegiance to a piece of fabric at all. But if I did, the nationality of the people who made it wouldn't play any role in my decision.

Why would I care if the man or woman making it has respect for it? And is that guaranteed if it's made in the United States? Granted I don't know much about the flag-making process, but I bet most of it is automated anyway. And I promise you that those robots making the flags don't have much respect for them. ;)

No, flags are mass produced things exactly like Xboxes and iPods. If you attach some deeper significance to them, that's your business.

If you want to pay extra for an American flag, do it. Put Walmart out of business, why don't you?

Most people prefer cheap. Flags are an instrument of empire.

does it really matter? what USA will gain by that?

If they import the flag means they need a proper textile to make it.

Russia import oranges and most of fruits coz the climate there is not appropriate.

All EU import coffea from Brazil coz the land and climate is more appropiate there.

It's not such a big deal imo.

You do know that's a contradiction no?

And China is not Communist.

I read through this thread and just feel well..disappointed. There is a great disconnect Americans seem to have with jobs what simple things like getting American people jobs making American flags. Obviously the US government, states, NASA, and the military think it is a big enough deal because they receive all of their flags from a company called Annin & Co. flags based out of New Jersey, and has manufacturing in Ohio and Virginia as well.

I think they should only be made in private prisons here in the good ol USA.
