this isn't working

Do you want poll results to be accurate?

  • Total voters
    10
  • Poll closed .
Yup, not working. Note the title of the poll. That is not correct since it was pulled from the wrong place. And 2 votes already, but by whom?

Guests being allowed to vote in the Poll section of the board is not going to change. It is like a gateway drug. First people vote in polls, then they register to post, and then we have hooked them like crack. The board owner is very firm on this.

that is the typical drug dealers attitude.

And taste like what? I'm waiting!

serious question-how old are you. anyone who grew up in the sixties or even early 70's understands the reference

I'll give you a slight hint

Think Charlie Watts

Guest votes could easly be noted as guest votes, i.e. a total given supporting a particular choice, e.g. 4 guest votes. The poll I got into to had about 60 guest votes and 17 real votes on one choice. A result that was displayed as '17 Member & 60 Guest' would allow the guest to participate and be motivated to join, but I guess only if there weren't 60 guest votes; but there wouldn't be if it was posted like that.

How ironic... the only people who voted "keep multiple votes easy" were all guests.

I've been asking the moderators for a while to do something about these "guest" votes which are being abused by IMO a (or multiple) disgruntled conservative forum user who is hell bent on "sticking it to them liberals"... It's sad, really. It is clear to all who look at poll results when they are intentionally being tampered with.

But I have given up long ago trying to get the moderators to do something about it. Instead I make all poll results visible and typically ignore guest votes completely.

Is there a way to track IP's though? That way someone can't just go vote 1k times anonymous. Say only one vote per IP address? Might not have the coding to do this though. I do agree that anonymous should be able to vote, why do you think I made my account? :)

I don't think so, but I don't have admin access, and they do have more tools, so I suppose it may be possible.

The thing is, there are several ways to ensure any poll is "accurate" in that it shows the results of just DP member voting. In the poll section, select the option to make votes public, then you can count the names of who voted for each option(this is what I do). If you make a poll in any section but the polls section, only members will be able to vote(please do not make them in the Breaking News sections, but pretty much any other section is fine). Also note that internet polls are not indicative of much really, so accuracy is not going to be there...ie every poll here has self selected respondents. Last thing to remember about your suggestion in particular: all of us mods have somewhat busy lives, and as such we are not going to spend a ton of time watching over any poll.

If you want the polls to be accurate then keep using the public poll option and count only the users.
But have you noticed that even when you chose the public poll option when a logged in voter votes that voter no longer can see who has voted unless he logs out. Yup, you have to log out, go back to the poll thread as a ‘visitor’ to see who has voted for what. Then you have to count the number of names to get an accurate count. While you’re there you might as well vote again.
