Several decades ago one great man (Mr. M.L. King) spoke about America's arrogance. What do you think, is America arrogant today or cured itself out of this disorder? :)

There are no words in the English language that can be assembled together into a sentence as to describe just how arrogant the United States is.
Imperialism. Materialism. None more satisfied by waving it's dong in the face of the world, blissfully unaware of just how bad the world thinks it's dong smells.

Yes, we are one mean country. G.D. America for coming to the aide of Nations all over the world. G.D. America for fighting along side of our allies in WW2 to defeat an evil empire. G.D. America for coming to the aide of destitute countries in their times of disaster and epidemics. Yes, we are one mean country. Riiight.

In my experience, you will find the most arrogant countries in Europe.

Still, US foreign policy has been quite arrogant.

Somewhat ironically, there's a wee bit of arrogance in that post.

If what you mean is, are the good citizens of the USA arrogant, the answer is hell yes.

No, I meant America the state, i.e. the USA. There is quite a difference between the state and the citizens, imho.

Half decade ago they had a reason to be arrogant. That time has passed.

You do realize their are many other countries in South, Central, and North America don't you?

Saying Americans could refer to Canadians and, while they may be arrogant, they certainly have no reason to be. ;)

You must have add to that arrogance.

Thanks for not including the context in which King spoke. That way all the hacks can come in here and play guessing games about it. Did you even put more than 30 seconds worth of thought into this poll?

Culturally, we tend to have no shame in taking full individual credit for things we do not have full control over (such as the prevailing attitude of "I work hard so I earned/deserve ..."). Alternatively, we also have a habit of glossing over our cultural mistakes by saying things like "well I wasn't individually involved in event x". This attitude does tend to breed arrogance that is not entirely deserved.

However, this attitude is useful as well, if we have a strong locus of control, then we will always attempt to shape events in our favor, even when it is serendipity, rather than our effort that may cause something to go in our favor, we can modify outcomes to our favor even if we achieve some % of modification rather than the full 100% we think we do. So it helps in terms of those outcomes.

This attitude is detrimental, because, we tend to gloss over the effect of community, culture, economics, and other social systems that do have an effect on us and should have their own focus beyond the individual doing the best they can. (Any good manager will expect their employees to do well, but also make sure they have the tools to do well too. Culturally, we tend not to focus on how good those tools are).

So, its a mixed bag.

Of course we're arrogant - you have to be arrogant to be the best. Being the world's leader is a tough job but, man, someone's gotta do it and what better country to do it than the USA - we're just that awesome.

Our awesomeness knows no bounds.

Even our liberals in California can't deny that our awesomeness knows no bounds :D

True but I'm definitely more awesome and that's not arrogant, just the truth.

It just comes across as arrogance, I know - but in reality it's just us being superior in all ways. Players gonna hate - they hate us for our brilliance for we shine like a diamond in a cave of ice and fire.

It's funny how we cling to America's WWII glory days like a middle aged man clings to his high school quarterback days.

I think some Americans are arrogant. Like anything else though, I try not to stereotype. I'm sure some Canadians are arrogant too.

Well, the problem is linguistic if nothing else. We can't call ourselves Canadians or Mexicans as those name are already taken. I suppose we could call ourselves United Statesians or United Statesers.

"America" is not a monolithic entity.

Certainly, many individual Americans can be arrogant when it comes to the issue of exceptionalism and comparing ourselves to other countries.

And our government at times has engaged in destructive/counterproductive foreign policy due to an inordinate degree of hubris.

Don't really think there's a simple answer to this question.

Maybe a little. Most nations are arrogant to some degree.

Right, let's book that to the list. I know there are not one but two continents with the name America and a bunch of nations to reside there. Still only one nation has adopted the name.
Let's add also names like NHL, NBA, etc. You know, it's annoying when listening to the news they say "X visited Y on the National Hockey League" and I think of my country's Hockey League. I know it's the journalist but why can't Yankees name their league "USHL" or something? Why do Yankees behave as they are the only nation on Earth?
Sorry for bringing this up. ;)

Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way...
