Do you believe that the US Government is better equipped and has a better track record in these areas than the private sector? For the purposes of this poll, the private sector is essentially anything non-government - the for-profit's and non-profit's combined.

Better for who?

Medicare and medicaid seem to be better than nothing for many people.

military, police, social safety net, infrastructure

I would have gone with Military Strategy only the Government is AWFUL AT IT they send our military to was the screw everything up by trying to micromanage every aspect and they have no clue.

This was true in Korea, Vietnam, and has been the case in Iraq, and Afghanistan.

If the People in Washington want a war they need to to tell the Military where to go and make war then get the hell out of the way and let them win.

How does this change the military from a public institution to a private one?

Should we privatize the military?

Your poll is missing a few things imo. But with only being able to do 10 poll options it's understandable.

Government is better at:
National Security: Which includes but is not limited to police, fire departments, and yes, the military.
NASA: NASA is one of the FEW government programs that has helped Americans than any other program/buisness.
Diplomacy: No Joe Blow down the street is capable of diplomacy with other nations.

Private Sector is better at:

Pretty much everything else.

Neutral: By neutral I'm talking about things that could be argued for both sides. Where there are definate pro's and con's to each side of the debate.

Inventions: Depends mainly on what is being invented, but there are other factors.
Charity work
Health Care

I'm sure there are other things that could be listed besides what is in the poll selection and in this post. But generally this is how I see it.

Inventing useful products

Rarely. The government can help pave the way for some useful products (e.g. the internet, GPS) but it generally takes the private sector to apply that technology and commercialize them.

Military strategy

Obviously.

Budgeting / Money Management / Investing

In some cases. There are both positives and negatives here. On the one hand, the government is subjected to political whims which the private sector is not. On the other hand, the private sector tends to be motivated by personal greed and irrationality. The private sector has not exactly impressed me with its money management skills in the past few years.

Construction

This is vague. The private sector tends to be better at actually constructing things (which is why the government usually outsources these jobs to them). The government is better at planning for public works projects, and paying for them.

Are we talking about doctors, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies? Both the government and private sector need to be heavily involved in medicine.

Providing various services (broad, sorry)

Too broad for an answer. ;)

Taking care of the needy

Yes, government is better.

Insurance

Government is better for health insurance. The private sector is better for most other kinds of insurance.
