Christie Team Assessing How Fast a 2012 Campaign Could Be Mounted
By MICHAEL D. SHEAR, DAVID M. HALBFINGER and JIM RUTENBERG
Published: October 1, 2011

WASHINGTON — Chris Christie’s political advisers are working to determine whether they could move fast enough to set up effective political operations in Iowa and New Hampshire in the wake of a relentless courtship aimed at persuading Mr. Christie, the governor of New Jersey, to plunge into the race for the Republican presidential nomination, according to operatives briefed on the preparations.

Mr. Christie has not yet decided whether to run and has not authorized the start of a full-fledged campaign operation. But with the governor now seriously considering getting in, his strategists — many of them veterans of Rudolph W. Giuliani’s 2008 campaign — are internally assessing the financial and logistical challenges of mounting a race with less than 100 days until voting is likely to begin.

Those challenges include not only raising money, but also spending it effectively in the crucial states with early primaries. That would mean meeting filing deadlines, hiring staff members, recruiting volunteers, putting together a travel schedule for Mr. Christie and his surrogates and devising a media campaign.

From the looks of him I would suggest he walk.

I'm not sure we're ready for a president that is so obese it is causing him to collapse.

Seriously though, if they can get it together, he could win the primary.

Mayne that's the trick in this day and age. Get in at the last second so there's no time to for folks to dig up and broadcast dirt on you before the election. So everybody votes for you based on your sound bite image.

How many times does the man have to say no before people will stop speculating? Do we have to wait until the first primary is over?

No, plenty of time to dig up and spread the dirt.

The Republican nomination process in this tea-party era reminds me of the old mechanical bull. Bachman was thrown off on the novice setting; Perry rode it for six weeks; and now Christie (a much smarter guy than the previous side-shows) will either break the bull or get a couple of month ride before being thrown to the mat.

I heard a couple of minutes of Ann Coulter singing Christie's praises this morning. I'd expect this to be the kiss of death with independents.

He has not said no lately and he has not said no to several direct questions...he is being pressured by the gop elite to run...they are frightened that the current crop will lose or they will get romney.....

You may be kidding I dont know ...but your right...some public figures or groups cheering for a candidate can have a negative effect...

Christie in unelectable for a multitude of reasons. The Republicans only have two candidates who stand a change against Obama, and they are Romney and Cain. Tea Party purity may win primaries, but the Tea Party candidate will be toast in a general election.

I don't have a crystal ball so I don't know if he would win. But he does have serious health issues... with his weight and asthma, I think he would have a difficult time with a rigorous campaign which is required to run for POTUS. When he took the Helicopter to see his son play baseball, there was a limo waiting to take him the remaining 100 yards... that tells you much about his health

The video of Christie saying he's not ready to be president will be fodder for his GOP rivals. And if he did get the nomination the Democrats would play this as well.

The fact that large GOP donors are looking towards him, is proof they are not happy with the current field of candidates... And who in the right mind can blame them?

Good point. I am an independent. If the GOP offers worthy candidate I will consider him or her. Right now it shouldn't be too difficult to find a number of strong candidates who can unite the nation and lead it through compromise and shared commitment and return it to the productive and peaceful world leader it once was. To date the GOP has offered hucksters, crazies, and zealots. None of the candidates excite America. How hard can it be when you look at the job Obama is doing? For some reason all the GOP can offer are candidates who will appeal to fractionalized groups.

He said no this past week. How "lately" does it need to be?

The GOP is desperate and I can't blame them. The only viable candidate they have is Romney. Few people really trust Romney as he says whatever he thinks will work for a particular group at a particular time. Electing Romney would be a lot like buying a used car from a slick used car salesman: whatever it takes to make the sale.

As a result of this reality no one in the GOP wants to talk about, "All we have is Romney", most of the GOP faithful run from new candidate to new candidate giddy with anticipation. First we had Palin and well, we know how that worked out. Then there was Michele "Pray the Gray Away" Bachmann and damn near no one now wants to admit they even considered that little fruit cake. Rick Perry, huckster extraordinaire. Perry is sharp.....on both ends, just like a little rat turd. I can't recall when a candidate became so hot and then so cold so quickly. Turns out Perry is dumber than a bag of hammers, not quite a male Bachmann. The crowd ran away from him and then back to Cain. For whatever reasons the faithful aren't enamored with Cain. They can't really see themselves snuggling up to Romney yet. Who can blame them? Now it's Christie, they hope. "Oh yeah, Christie, why didn't we think of him before?" Now everyone is running to Christie and giddy and excited. All this is happening while Romney is standing the background waving his hands yelling, "Me, Oooo, over here. Me! Pick me, pick me, over here."

Sooner rather than later the GOP faithful will realize that Christie is not going to run. Then Palin will announce her candidacy and the GOP faithful will run to Palin with giddy excitement until they realize what they knew all along. Palin is as daft as they come. In the end, the GOP faithful will shuffle over to Romney and reluctantly claim him the ideal candidate.

Republicans don't really like Romney. There's never been a Wow! there. People don't trust Romney. Romney won't beat Obama. America will endure. If ever the GOP had a chance to galvanize the nation and unify the electorate, it is now. They can't find anybody they can agree on.

If you read between the lines lately the GOP is not nearly as confident they can knock obama off with the current crop running as foxnews and drudge make it out that they are....if you "READ" various different outlets the GOP has been feverishly recruiting "OTHER" candidates...why? if they were so confident they have a winner. Christie was not the first to be hawked to get in the race, he wasnt their first choice....
Watch out for these Wall Street Protests to pick up steam...I think the teapartys opposition is just now beginning

The campaign today is a 26.2 mile marathon --- correction --- a series of marathons run week after week after week. The real question would be concerning the physical shape that Christie is in, his health problems and his ability to put himself through such a grueling schedule. In 1896 William McKinley invited the nation to come to Ohio and hear him pontificate from the cozy confines of his front porch. Over 700,000 did do just that and he won the election. Perhaps Christie should go to his local bookstore and read up on that campaign.

While I would love for Christie to be the GOP nominee for the entertainment value, I don't believe he could win the GOP nomination for two reasons: his health issues would cause many undecided voters to have concerns about his ability to do the job and the extreme-right now exerting considerable control over the GOP will not support him.

Im not being sarcastic here...I think the best thing christie could do..is pass this time around, stay governor of NJ...run for relection in two years then think about a run in 2016...but what is paramount is that he start NOW...defeating his eating disorder, started eating right and begin and excersize regimen and nurse himself to health...so hes better prepared and positioned to run.

I agree, FD, though I am not all that familiar with severity of his health. I'd imagine most of his health problems could be reversed if he lost weight, but I don't know that much about his health. Certainly the growing radical faction of the GOP is an issue in and of itself. Over a few decades the GOP has developed the nasty habit of sleeping with anybody. They remind me of a song by Tim Wilson, "She Slept With Texas": "Look in her eyes and buy her some french fries, she'll beat you back to your hotel". The GOP couldn't wait to get into bed with the Religious Right and they've secretly regretted it ever since. It's hurt them to be so closely associated with religious extremists.

I'm not certain whether the evangelicals from the GOP attracted the Tea Party or whether the Tea Party attracted the evangelicals. Whichever way it went the Tea Party found a home within the GOP and their religious connections seemed to be welcomed by the ever-growing religious right within the GOP. No matter, the GOP seems to attract ultra/extreme right people. Those of common and reasonable sense in the GOP, and there are some, have lost or are losing their control of the party.

I was once a member of the GOP. I hardly recognize it anymore.

Not onl that but Christie may be the very person needed to energize the not only the Gop, but Independents and even disillusioned Democrats., to the point he can stomp Obama in the General election in Nov. 2012.
Gov. Christie delivered a very energetic speech at the Reagan Library and if he gets the fire inside to replace his reluctance half hearted feels he seemed to have, Obama will have met his match.

My hope is that the Gov. if elected places people around him with experience and knowledge, rather than the way Obama did by placing total radical amateurs, who felt as much animosity toward America as he and his wife displayed in the past.

I know I have a tendency to lump all Liberals together, but there are actually some who are not as dense as blind followers of Obama can be. They think for themselves and have seen that Obama is not who or what some people have built him up to be.

If you are one of those Democrats I apologize to you, because it is no more fair of me than those who lumped all Conservatives together when President Bush was in office.

I spent a great deal of time talking with my audience about what I saw at the time were President Bush's mistakes.

My only question about Gov. Christie is does he have time in the next couple of months to raise the money needed to mount a credible and effective campaign prior to the primaries that are being moved up to early next year.

I think that these primary moves are unfair to all the candidates because it seriously reduces the time they have to get their message across.

I do expect that the wackos will attack The Gov. because of his weight because they will be pulling out all the stops to divert attention away from real issues such as Obama's failures and lies, and the reaal need for change at the top now every bit as much as Obama claimed in the last election.

Truth is it has no affect on ones ability to to think or do the right thing.

I do hope the Gov. will employ a speech writer who will lay some of Obama's bigger lies and mistakes and the Gov. will present them with conviction.

Tea Partiers may not like Romney, but you're blinded by partisan wishful-thinking if you seriously think Romney couldn't beat Obama. Romeny would win by a landslide against Obama in a general election. Americans want a president that can be trusted to fix the economy. That is Romney and Cain, nobody else. In fact, Romney-Cain would make a great ticket, Obama wouldn't have a chance. The only thing that could save Obama from Romney is a Tea Party third-party candidate stealing votes.

Obama sucks, no matter what leftie hacks have to say about it, the country cannot afford another four years of Obama. But if the Republicans nominate a tea party candidate they are basically handing Obama the election on silver platter. They know it and he knows it.

Christie is out, Councilman. He's not up to it. He cannot compete with Romney's money, especially at this point. If Christie was such a great idea why didn't the GOP people run to him first instead of swooning over a series of cluster****s: Palin, Bachman, Perry and a few also rans? The fact is Christie is simply the latest someone who isn't Romney.

The real problem Romney faces is that he looks and talks just like, and may have actually been, the guy who laid you off.

lolololol...now that was funny

Christie needs to get Chaz Bono as his running mate to make himself look thinner.

I am a non-partisan. I don't belong to a party. Give me a worthy GOP candidate and I'll vote for him or her. I wish the GOP could forward a solid candidate. They haven't and they cannot.

LOL! Yeah, OK. Now who is being the blinded partisan?

Americans want a president that can be trusted to fix the economy.

And you know this because.........
