My personal view is when the US has more disasters than Congress gave the agency repsonible funding for, then Congress needs to redirect funds to cover the costs. We cannot continue to deficit spend. So yes, if the disaster relief is a high priorty then the cost must be offset by cuts in other programs.

Right, it's no longer a choice of what we would like to do. We simply can not continue to spend money we do not have. We have to pick our priorities.

So whats the priorities...tax cuts for corporations and the rich first....then disaster relief for people caught in natural disasters through no fault of their own and lost everything...

The discussion is around what should be done here. Are you disagreeing with my point and believe that we should just spend all day with no care for how in debt we are?

Since Bush doubled the Defense budget, would you agree taking the money from there?

No, it shouldn't be.

Instead, Congress should plan better for disaster relief spending and do better about setting aside funds for disaster relief. Considering how important it is to spend that money to rebuild to revitalize the economy, I don't see why Cantor would deliberately try to kill jobs here in the U.S.

Actually, I would. Slowly scale down the overseas troop size and use the money we save where it is needed most. I see no problem with that.

Tax the rich along w/corporations and wah-la! Money. There is NO REASON to cut from social programs. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are practically begging we, "The People" to fight for ourselves and ask Congress to raise their taxes. They're telling us that they can and will help our country. Interesting how the VERY people trying to protect "The Rich" refuse to listen to THE two richest men in America. The GOP is protecting everyone below Gates and Warren - the ones stepping on the backs of the Middle class and Poor in hope of someday having the net worth and importance of both men.

Clearly the ones refusing to listen want to cut from social programs. In all their Christianity, they dont feel its really their job to help others.

Can anyone show that if we taxed the "rich" more, it would cover all the spending and debt reduction? There is plenty of waste by the federal govt.
People also need to be willing to help themselves and quit looking solely for a handout from the feds.

bottom line, the feds needs a balanced budget. Like we all have to or should live under

Perry...if your family was in a natural disaster, be it any kind and you werent in the financial position to assure your families well being or safety...you wouldnt be asking this question....my answer is take care of the disaster first...they people that are in need assure they are safe and have food and shelter...and worry bout the debt later....like by raising TAXS to pay for it....this question shouldnt even be asked.
You dont play political games when peoples lives are at stake or they are in misery...and you certainly dont play lets banter endlessly on how we pay for this natural disaster while everyones waiting for help because We made a promise not to ever raise taxs for any reason...

It looks like Cantor has flopped on this issue, what a surprise - NOT.

PolitiFact Virginia | Cantor flops position on disaster aid offsets

When Tropical Storm Gaston slammed into central Virginia in August 2004, U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor went all out to get federal disaster aid for his constituents.

The Aug. 30 deluge dumped a foot of rain on the Richmond area in 10 hours, causing floods, landslides and eight deaths.

Cantor, R-7th, fired a letter to then-Homeland Secretary Tom Ridge, seeking "immediate action" from Washington. "Time is of the essence and it is important to start working on this matter so my constituents can receive help in this time of need," Cantor wrote.

Just because we believe the rich should pay more, doesn't mean we approve of wasteful spending. We can cut from military and other areas, legalize & tax Marijuana, bring jobs back and hit the rich with higher taxes. They're begging us to tax them. We should do it.. it certainly wont HURT America now will it? We can save many social programs and help our fellow Americans in need.

this is a perfect example of politifact in action - as Cantor is not saying that it is not the role of the Federal Government not to help with natural disasters (as some conservatives do), there is no flip.

yes. and furthermore, we won't bring in any extra revenue.

You have to wonder what the position of Cantor would be if a major disaster hit his own district really hard and he had hundreds of thousands of constituents climbing up his posterior clamoring for help and help now?

NJ Governor Chris Christie seems to have discovered such a situation.

edit: just read the post from PB detailing how cantor lobbied for funds previously. thanks.

I'll bet you were expecting us to vote mixed this time weren't you? Weren't you? You know D....R....D....R.... hahahahahaha

This "independent" votes other...
And boy oh boy, our nation is really split !
Since Cantor is a tea-bagger, I automatically and instinctively oppose him.
But he does have a point...as Mike states , there is plenty of waste, this must be worked on.
And, instead of always having so much "disaster relief", lets start building this nation, its infrastructure, the h*e*l*l with hopeless foreign nations, several in the near east as examples.

I've stated many times that if it was up to me the cuts would be across the board. I don't know how many times I stated that the soldiers would be out of Afghanistan and Iraq. I believe that would more than pay for any assistance.

Yes, worry about the debt later.....no sorry, I disagree. We have to get rid of those ideas. If we are going to do this and we only have X amount of money we simply have to cut somewhere, decide what would be enough of a fund for disasters and put that money aside to NEVER be touched for anything else. It can't be run like social security which is another similiar issue.

It wouldn't be tough to raise the taxes. Obama simply needed to go on telelvision last week and convince the country it was the right thing to do. If he came up with a legit program that would actually bring in money, I'd be fine with starting out the spending while it was still coming in. Problem is, he can't do this. He is a failure as a leader. He's an organizer, not a leader.

Rather than edit my previous statement........maybe if Obama had went after those companies sending jobs overseas like he promised he would, we would have more money. (I'm not letting this go)

Cantor like the other teaparty far righters have painted themselves in a corner...with the RAISE TAXS NEVER on the rich crap...I hope he didnt retract his statement...and I hope its repeated enough times for most of america to hear it.....so they will resoundly reject the teaparty doctrine of protect the rich at all costs...including against people caught in natural disasters that lost their homes and have no place to go....utterly fricken ridiculous.

Now theyve morphed from no one is entitled to Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid...to no one deserves a pension or health benefits from their employers...Public Workers are OVERPAID and need to be stripped of benefits....now its SCREW everyone caught in a natural disaster while we frick around and play politics and clamor we have to PAY FOR IT FIRST...until the last minute then bend over AGAIN like the debt ceiling...
Every time they make a press release the teaparty pushs me further and further away from the republican party...

I also hope he continues to repeat it. It takes lots of repetition to get through thick headed idiocy. Natural disaster relief is not dependent upon taxing the rich btw. But nice red herring

Can you quote who said public workers should be stripped of benefits? Or is that another nonsense inflammatory made up partisan statement that you believe? Or perchance is that lifted from one of the union flyers... :lamo

It might not be such a big loss.

It's a bit of a catch-22 but a deceitful one at that. Of course it's the "rich" because they are the only ones paying income taxes, never mind, many of them are not actually rich. The arguement is no tax increases until cuts are agreed upon.

Oxham before you ask silly questions you really should pay attention to whats going on around you...ask christie..walker...rick scott and kasich if they said public workers are overpaid and need to be attacked...

Personally if someone needs to get caught in a natural disaster and loses everything they have...and have to wait for any relief while the teaparty fondles themselves...I certainly Hope with all sincerity its YOU...
