GOP's Gun Raffle In Giffords' District Sparks Hot Debate

Is this raffle in extremely bad taste?

This has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment(which allows for a well-regulated militia when it took ten minutes to load your gun). I have no problem with responsible people having guns but this doesn't make sure the person getting the gun is responsible. It is also in bad taste because of the shooting that recently happened. There really wasn't anything else the could have raffled? How about a gift card, savings bond, cash.

Let's turn this around a bit. Let's say that about half a year ago, in a certain town, there was an incident where a driver ran a 1968 Ford Mustang into a crowd and killed several people. Now, half a year later, some organization has a raffle and the object of the raffle is a brand new 2011 Ford F350 truck, donated by a local dealership. Should people be incensed that someone is raffling off a Ford, the same make of vehicle that was used in the mass-runover? Even though it is a different model and type of vehicle and the incident happened several months ago? Just because it is a "Ford" brand vehicle?

That's about how much the one has to do with the other.

That is not at all the impression I garnered from the article in the OP. But why is it that many threads here which involve guns involve these sort of Playboy magazine centerfold descriptions of guns at some point? Why is that some mandatory exercise some feel they have to go through to prove their credentials to other gin owners?

1. Some people like talking about their favorite guns.
2. Some people know it annoys some people and derive some amusement from that fact.

The OP described a serious situation and deserves appropriate comments and participation. I so loathe these discussions here which have anything to do with guns because far too often someone wants to turn it into PLAYGUN Magazine and describe in detail their favorite centerfold. And such things have nothing at all to do with the thread or the OP.

Its a cry fest. Oh those evil people are selling a gun that is similar to the gun used to shot our lady. Even if it was the same gun this would be a non issue that only cry babies without a life would care about.

Arizona is very pro gun ownership. Has been a open carry State for years. If I am not mistaken the State passed a law this year on allowing concealed weapons without permit.

So would it make a difference to you if the fund raiser and raffle was in a different Congressional district in Arizona?

I am more concerned that the gunman (Jared Loughner) will not be held accountable for his action. Yes, I know he is one sick person. Even the most insane make decision. Though the decisions may be based on some other form of reality.

Yes, it would bother me less and maybe that isn't logical. I'm also concerned that someone like Loughner not get a gun this way when they could not get one otherwise.

I think it is all about the timing. I wouldn't expect the gunshops to close their businesses because of the shooting. But because this killing of 6 innocent people took such a political fight I question the Republicans choice.
Sure, it is definitely their choice but as evident it is causing some disdain. Just like wanting to build a mosque next to the 9-11 center, they have that right but ....

If you win a gun in a raffle, you still have to fill out the paperwork and be background-checked via the NICS system, just as if you bought it. No one is going to get the gun who couldn't buy one in a gunstore.

That is not the same at all. The primary purpose of a car is not to kill anything. People don't associate cars with murder the way guns are. How about if instead of several people being shot, several were stabbed and killed. I'm not exactly sure how that would happen, but go with me here. Then later the GOP raffled off a set of knives. That would be in bad taste.

On a side note, this would be less troubling if it were some other group holding the raffle. Say the local chapter of the NRA. Somehow it is worse because it's the GOP. It feels like a political move and not just fundraising.

That's good to know.

1. Cars kill more people than guns. Lots more.

Many of us don't associate guns with murder. We associate guns with shooting sports, hunting, target shooting, and self-protection. We don't look at a gun and think "Bad gun!! Evil gun!! Oh, you're just waiting to jump up and kill someone aren't you!!!"

Nope. We look at 'em and think "GOOD gun! Useful tool for sport, hunting and protection." Then we gives' 'em a pat on the muzzle and a Scooby Snack for being so good...

Bingo, you hit it there. One can't ignore the political undertones to this. Five years down the road I really don't think anyone would pause at a raffle of a gun by the party. But seriously, they need to get a clue.

Now with this silly business of being offended is B/S and disingenuous, I suppose we should ban any equipment, tool, vehicles or anything that has taken a life or maimed for life should be banned for life. This is just attempt to capitalize on a tragedy to further a political agenda or candidate, now this is offensive and a insult to anyone's intelligence. Perhaps we could have a hanging tree in the town square and charge for admission and hang the SOB who shot Giffirds.

So ... what if a convicted felon wins the raffle?

Dude. All I wrote was that it is my favorite model Glock, I'd replace the springs and load it hot. Now, the 22 is a fine model and I think .40 is the best round, but I don't find the size and weight (including rounds) worth the capacity.

1. Some people like talking about their favorite guns.
2. Some people know it annoys some people and derive some amusement from that fact.

1. I didn't say it was my favorite over all. he 1911, which I mentioned, is my favorite. I also like small-frame .357s. Shotguns and rifles would be kinda off topic, so I'll leave those aside.

2. What?

So ... what if a convicted felon wins the raffle?

Bonus weapon, revealed at the beqeathing. Do you think?

It depends on intention of the driver, same as what is the intention of the gun owner.

I agree with that. They do need to get a clue. Of course, we have the more frightening alternative is that they know exactly what they are doing and want to get this sort of reaction.

How did you feel about the mosque they wanted next to the 9-11 center?

It was an entirely different group of Muslims who wanted it built. It was probably their right to build it right there but just not the way to go, at least to me.

he doesn't get the gun very simple really but what we can hand him some cash.

No. When he bough the ticket he agreed to be eligible or forfeit. I figure.

Anyway, I almost forgot...

I'd pop that sweet thing off like 'bing bing bing' all night long.

What is the primary purpose and main function of a Mustang?

What is the primary purpose and main function of a firearm?

I completely agree. I'm not against the gun raffle, it's the time and the place.

Losing to a Camaro.

Self defense.

Also, car sex.

You don't get it, a Glock is about quality, it's a beautiful gun, a precision insrument. A cheap ass Kalicnikov or however you spell it can kill people too but who wants that piece of crap. By the way a shotgun is arguably the most dealy anti personel gun there is. Seven rounds of 00 Buck, nine 30 cal slugs a piece, do the math.
You are correct, I don't get it, quality or not, I don't understand why they would raffle off a gun that was similar to one that the one Giffords was shot with. In my opinion, the person who made this decision has his head up his/her butt.
