Re: Does a person who entertained succession from the country deserve to be president

In essence, secession is a breach of the legally binding contract that is the Constitution.
Except that the Constitution has a specific provision which stupulates that all rights are reserved to the states unless diminished/prohibited by the Constitution.
Nothing in the Constitution prohibits secession, and thus, the right to do is is retained.
Thus, no breach.

How about this then. You can secede, but the United States Government has the right to send in the military to protect Federal Property. Military installations, any and all armaments belonging to the military, post offices, federal offices, Federal Reserve Bank, border crossings, etc. If you can be your own country without appropriate munitions, a post office, a monetary system, and unregulated borders go for it. Oh, and we'd like to be reimbursed for all the federal money spent on Interstate highways or other public transportation systems. Of course, we reserve the right to put tariffs on anything you try to export to the US.

Sound fair?

There aren't any Constitutionaly-mandated conditions on leaving the union.
Now the US government can certainly decide that it wants/needs to protect those thinga and take action to reclaim those things, but that has nothing to do with a state having the right to leave the union.

No, and perry cant win because of that statement. How is that man going to get up in front of Americans and explain his actions? He will get destroyed in debates. I really dont think this guy will even come in 2nd for the GOP nomination. Americans dont want another Texas governor who claims god speaks to him. This is an example of insanity, not leadership. If Texas does succeed from the Union, I would love to see them try to make it on their own. All I have heard in the last 3 months is Texas needing government aid for their current droubt problems. Maybe someday a hurricane will smash Texas and we will see just how independent they can be. They wouldnt get federal aid in the form of food, water, citizen relocation, nothing. Its easy to say you dont need America until you need America. I say we kick them out. Let them handle their own disasters and poverty on their own. They are a state based on outdated christian beliefs and influence. They are the most racially biased state in America. They dont believe in the EPA, Clean energy, or enforcing gun restrictions. They are the only state that hates America and I would be 100% Ok with erasing them off the United States map. Any form of leadership thats EVER come out of Texas has done horrid for our nation anyways.

Wow.

BTW, repeat yourself much?

Re: Does a person who entertained succession from the country deserve to be president

Oh noes!!!! I put an extra c in the word, clearly that means you're right :roll:

I know the futility of trying to confront you with actual facts but I'll post this anyway;

"Discussions and threats of secession have often surfaced in American politics, but only in the case of the Confederate States of America was secession actually declared. A 2008 Zogby International poll revealed that 22% of Americans believe that "any state or region has the right to peaceably secede and become an independent republic."[32][33] The United States Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. White, 74 U.S. 700 (1869) that unilateral secession was unconstitutional while commenting that revolution or consent of the states could lead to a successful secession.[34][35]"

Secession - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Read the Declaration of Independence sometime. There's always been an understanding that it is quite possible for a government to lose the consent of the governed. This country was founded on revolution. It's a little funny to me that people who would never criticize Jane Fonda's activities during Vietnam will accuse Rick Perry of treason simply because he's conservative.

One issue, as I understand it, in the Texas secession talk (which is just a meme ) is the fact that Texas was once a Republic. Maybe a Texan can explain this.

Re: Does a person who entertained succession from the country deserve to be president

@repeter
Secession is the foundation of American; we seceded from England! Secession is the heart of the Declaration of Independence; “…that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter and abolish it and to institute new Government…” The 10th Amendment reserves powers not delegated by the states to the federal government to the states or the people, thus states may act unless specifically prohibited. The US Constitution says nothing about secession.
Your post is not backed up by history nor the laws of this land.

@U.S. Socialist
I ask you to reply to post #21.
Regarding post #33, the states are not subservient to the federal government; this is not how our system of government was created. The Confederate states did not want to overthrow the US federal government nor go to war, they simply wanted to govern themselves, just as the American colonists wanted.

Re: Does a person who entertained succession from the country deserve to be president

I don't know about the word "deserves". In my lifetime the people who most deserved to be president based upon their qualifications and experience were never given the party nomination. The Dem/GOP parties don't care who deserves the job, or even who's qualified. They just want someone who can win. And that in a nutshell is what's wrong with American government.

That said, I'd never vote for a candidate who had ever espoused breaking up the union.

It is a popularity / demographics contest as to who plays out best in the media.

The word meme has become a meme.

As has the phrase no true Scotsman. Don't know what it means, stop reading when I see it. I digress.

I like Perry. He hates BO almost as much as I do. And if he doesn't win, Texas is soo outtta here. Will you really miss us? Fear us, yeah. But miss us?

We are divided. And bitter. One side needs to lose and lose bad. We're at a crossroads. We can choose entitlement or liberty, but can't have both. That's what Perry is saying.

Pure, unadulterated horse puckey.

Re: Does a person who entertained succession from the country deserve to be president

All the right leaning people that voted no, would have voted yes if Obama made the statement instead...

And all the left leaning people would have defended Obama had he made the statement. /shrug

Re: Does a person who entertained succession from the country deserve to be president

In essence the question is: Are we "ONE NATION under God" or are we 50 small nations under a very loose confederation? The question for Perry is, are you a Texan, or an American?

Re: Does a person who entertained succession from the country deserve to be president

No they don't. Does history mean nothing to you people? There was something that happened between 1861-1865 that settled the question.

If states could secede anytime they got kind of mad, how big do you think the Union would be today? It would be the Confederation of New York and New Jersey, if that. Saying states have the right to secede changes this from the UNITED States of America to the "Kinda sorta Confederated States of America, depending on how the Governor of North Carolina feels about the whole thing today."

lol.... first thing I thought of when you said "Depending on how the governor of north carolina feels about the whole thing" was... since she is a female....

She could be PMSing real bad and decide that she is mad at Washington and Secede, only to rejoin in a week.

Of course, she is probably past PMS by now in her age.

Representative republic of 50 states under one government.
The states are sovereign entities unto themselves, not simple political subdivisions of the whole.
