50 years ago american manufacturers were paying the highest wages in the world and they had to.

And what was wrong with that? As in ... i.e. what was wrong with that then? Were the lower to middle class citizens better off financially in those times than they are now?

economic reality has made that artificiality go away. deal with it.

we are no longer the only major manufacturing power like we were in the 50s

we are not the only high tech manufacturer like we were in the 60's and 70s

other countries can duplicate our hi tech ability for far less money

you want a time that will never exist again

big dumb guys cannot expect to do low skilled factory work and make as much as a mid level manager of a big company or the same as a RN or a programmer

Poverty in the US almost as bad as in North Korea

"While there are five million in North Korea that face food shortages, the same number in the US is 45 million."

and thus you seem to agree that those whose main argument is that they exist within a certain proximity of someone who is rich and thus are entitled to someone else's wealth are full of it

As an Anarchist, I am philosophically opposed to private ownership of the means of production. The mean of production belong to society, and should be administered, democratically, by the people, themselves.

an interesting dream with no chance of reality. (thank god)

Libertarianism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

an interesting dream with no chance of reality. (thank god)

Admittedly; there aren't that many examples of what you might call, more-or-less 'fully realized' Anarchist societies, and the examples that have existed have tended to be small-scale. However, the best examples I would point to would be Revolutionary Span, or the Israeli Kibbutzim.

If you are interested, I've just created a new thread on the subject, for anybody who may be interested in learning about Anarchism, or discussing it, at length. I plan to update the thread with more links, and probably some videos, soon. All are welcome, and encouraged to participate.

This is sad and those who allowed this to happen should be ashamed ...
Yes, it seems those of the hard right variety think it is not possible to have a strong middle class any longer, they think the only way America can compete today is by making our citizens as poor as the third world countries.

If we could become self-sufficient, we could avoid all this mess ... however, we seem to have an unhealthy addiction to foreign oil ..

I made a poll that is somewhat related to your post asking what we can do to lower poverty levels: http://www.debatepolitics.com/polls/105092-elimination-poverty-re-establishment-middle-class.html

I always laugh at the notion of envy and jealousy. Pay the same taxes I do and get the hell over yourself:roll:

Can you provide any evidence of when and where those pictures were taken? For example, could the top one be from Joplin, MO in 2011 or New Orleans in 2005?

Well, I was going to show pictures of true poverty, but all I get is one of two links, but it takes you to the site where my pictures are. Sorry, but that won't do. I'll keep trying.

So we are not as poor as we should be yet????? Quite the idealist aren't you? :sun

I do not know as I did not post the picture ... would it really matter though? are you that far disconnect LesGovt, that you can't believe that poverty exists? In the town I live in, charities cannot get enough help to provide food, shelter, guidance etc. to the poor. It seems like you want to pretend that our country doesn't have suffering?

Sorry, you are correct. You did not post them, Catawba did. I will ask Catawba. And, yes, it could be important to know the origin of the pictures. Does poverty exist in the U.S.? Of course it does to the extent that it is poverty. There are many places around the world that are far worse and far more widespread than our poorest areas.

Please do not embarrass yourself by asking such silly questions. Where in anything that I said could you get the idea that I thought "we are not as poor as we should be?" That was truly disgraceful.

Now, I mistakenly asked MusicAdventurer a question that should have come to you. Can you please tell us when and where the pictures were taken that you posted? Thanks.

Are you saying you want to see the worse off in the world helped before those suffering in the U.S. are helped?

Did you notice the blue font with a line under it on the post. That is called a hyperlink. You will need to click on it. Hope this helps! :sun

Did you see that link and web page LesGovt ... its really shameful, Americans should be ashamed ... we were the country that was supposed to rise above all this. Here it is (the one Catawba posted) again for your reference: http://ivarfjeld.wordpress.com/2010/11/20/poverty-in-the-us-almost-as-bad-as-in-north-korea/

Its funny, I was traveling across state the other day in my car the other day, I am among the lucky few who can (at the moment) afford a good one, and I was in aw of how much land there is just sitting with nothing being done to better the land. Some land owner is just letting it sit there. There are plenty of people who would love the chance to have land, plant crops, raise animals etc ... but .. as poor stewards of this earth, property owners cling onto and hoard their land, letting it's potential go to waste while others suffer. So sad to see the land go to waste. It really made me realize just how ethical and intelligent land owners and for a government and its people that would allow such things

Not that surprising, considering:

"the top 10% of families owns over 71%, and the bottom 40% of the population owns way less than 1%."

Wealth Distribution

If our tax system was fair and just, taxes would be proportioned the same way.

Could not agree more ..

Here's that graph so everyone can see it :)
