The best way to fix our Economy?

Do we get out of debt by raising taxes, cutting tax breaks, AND cutting some spending

Unfortunately..

The latter manifests from the former. The goal is to get out of debt, so we must fix our economy. We fix the economy, we get out of debt.

The problem is, it seems like our politicians are trying to attack both problems at the same time, and often the policies required to fix one may worsen the other.

So how does one fix this problem?

Or, are we doomed?

The honest answer is, it really depends on your philosophy/perspective.

Agreed ... but what is your position? I am still honing mine. One involves allowing more products on the market. e.g. allowing the farming of hemp, freeing the "criminals" who have marijuana related charges, legalizing marijuana (ending its prohibition) and fixing the built in system that keeps the poor in welfare (see my previous link explaining this: http://www.debatepolitics.com/polls/104392-do-you-want-higher-taxes-6.html#post1059654691) just to throw out a few quick ideas ... so ... what else do you think we can we do?

So you basically want to create manufacturing around marijuana, hemp and other marijuana based products and services to help those welfare users. Ok... hemp definately got a raw deal in the early 20th century and is a very versitile and renewable resource. If marijuana were better use and less abused... use for medical applications would be supported and hell, I even support personal use (so sale, no access by kids and no driving under the influence though).

Where in that post does it say that I want to use that market to support welfare? I thought we are talking about bettering the economy ...?

As for the rest of your post, it appears we are in agreement.

Isn't helping welfare users helping the economy?

I read the following and understood it that way...

What people do in their own homes as long as they do it to themselves and do not endanger anyone else - is really none of mine, the government, the state or anyone elses business. Yep we're in agreement.

I think it's somewhat clear what must be done.

We should cut tax breaks, raise taxes, and cut spending; we need to live within our means.

We can't spend our way out of the hole.
We can't tax our way out of the hole.
We can't cut tax breaks to get out of the hole.

An analogy would be that America is like a fat and unhealthy person.

You have to not only burn calories, but also eat right and utilize your metabolism.

Basically, we need to cut spending, tax breaks, and we need to tax. Politicians shouldn't be paid so well just to squabble and waste our time. Imo, CEOs shouldn't recieve such comically obscene bonuses; why would you even defend them? They don't know/care about you.

Also, I believe everyone should invest in solar panels; I don't believe the lie that solar panels aren't effective enough; just make a grand amount of them and stick them on houses and buildings, etc. I'd love to see solar panels cover virtually every house/practical building.

I think we need to be thrifty and efficient. I embody that.

Take a bag of organic Rainier cherries; I eat them and then take the seeds. Now, I have a small nursery of cherry trees. People, imo, should have large gardens. Asparagus is incredibly convenient and worth the effort. If you have even two 6ft-long rows, you're looking at a lot of FREE delicious food. Also, typical garden-grown asparagus is highly resistant to pests and disease. Grow pear trees. Walmart's garden items are rapidly dropping in price. Cherry, pear, and apple trees are only about $18. Invest. Invest in five or so of those and you'll reap the rewards. Also, plums, paw-paw(in zones 3-5), and others also save money.

I feel if we pull together to tighten our belts, we will see the day that America gets out of debt.

We do not need to cut some spending we need to make a **** load of cuts to spending, make caps on spending, make caps on taxes so that the government does not have an excuse to blow more of it and we need to enact a paygo system. We should be appalled that since 1962 the debt ceiling has been raised 74 times.
