making food avaliable, is not child abuse. demanding the child over-eat, under penalty of no tv, no video games, being grounded, or even violence, would certainly be abuse.

but simply having a full fridge, is not abuse.

Is it not abuse if the parents basically facilitate their child killing themselves? That is basically what we're talking about in these extreme cases. Kids who are so obese they already have the health problems that a 400-pound middle-aged man might have.

I have this view, but to a further extent. If the child is 40-50 pounds above average, that is grounds for intervention.

Yeah. We're talking about smaller people, thus a smaller amount of weight is dangerous for them. A 6'4 400lbs man is roughly double the weight he should be. But a 100lbs 6-year-old is also roughly double the weight they should be.

I erred slightly, then. Basically, I'd be stricter on this issue. I wouldn't mind regulations on food for adults, as well. I would bet people in the UK, on average, are slimmer than people in America. Granted, I appreciate "good" capitalism and freedom, but enough is enough.

I am 40 years old and weigh 140 pounds. When I was teaching in the States, I had FEMALE students who weighed more than me... and they were MIDDLE SCHOOL students...

50 lbs over...no,
300 lbs over...yes

Why is that?

50 lbs overweight is still unhealthy and can easily lead to more problems, which more medical costs and taxes.

I'm 5'4 and weigh about 115. In the States, I get a lot of comments that I need to "eat something." When I was in most of Europe, I was regarded as what I actually am - a perfectly normal weight, if a little on the lighter end. I've literally had people ask me if I have an eating disorder in the US. I'm not all that thin. It's absurd.

Sidgaf - A 6-year-old who is 50lbs overweight is the exact equivalent of a tall man who is 400lbs. A child that age wouldn't SURVIVE being 300lbs overweight. So you're saying we should wait until the kid is dead to intervene?

In certain instances yes. If a child is morbidly obese and the parents keep feeding their kids unhealthy garbage I think that rates up there with child abuse. It's child abuse to starve and malnourish children, I also think it's child abuse to feed them garbage and enable an unhealthy weight.

yes 50 lbs may lead up to more problems, which more medical costs and taxes, but 300 lbs is beyond the more problems stage. I think there is still hope up to 50lbs, after that it's all down hill.
I remember when I went into the Navy I was 30lbs over my ideal weight, but still in the weight range. By the end of basic the Navy took care of the 30lbs.

Not for a child. You're forgetting that they're shorter than you are. Hell, even for me, my healthy weight range only consists of 30lbs. For you, an extra 30lbs makes you *maybe* mildly overweight. For me, it would make me clearly overweight. For a 6-year-old, an extra 30 makes you morbidly obese. Like I said, I doubt a 6-year-old could survive being 300lbs overweight.

Generally only USians refer to me as thin. Others see muscles (ok, so they're not bulging) and a small belly. USians are like "are you starving?!"
(I'm 6'1", 180lbs) There's definately a vision thing along with the weight catastrophe in the US. I've found that any distance from a coast and water parks/lakes/etc become circus freak shows like Walmart.

50% obesity, 300m people... national healthcare? Why not just call it quits now and tear down the system.

I was thinking more along the lines of teens, but lets say up to 30% of ideal weight... no, anything after that ... yes

My wife is 5 ft 4 and weighs 130. She still looks good because it's all in the right places.

if a child is dangerously over-weight, and the parents see nothing wrong with is/her condition, and feel no need to adjust the child's habit, then I can see a reason for the authorities to intervene.

but without any real danger to the child, its not the govt's business. we can't all be thin, muscular, blond hair, blue eyes,.....

Regulations on food for adults? How about you mind your own damn biz. The fact that you wish to go there makes you seem like someone who would creep and peep in windows looking at what grown adults are eating. It is none of your damn business:roll:

I am not sure why you would get comments about that here as 5'4 and 115 is not what I would call thin and esp. not to the point of thinking you may have an eating disorder. Hell I am around 5'8 and even when I was around 107 I still did not think of myself thin. I have eating disorder issues though too.

I love my curves now and guess what? The average suze is 12 and up. While we have issues with obesity in this country? We also have issues on the other side w/girls starving themselves to be thin.

As a tax payer I get tired of seeing huge fat women with 4 kids in tow stocking up on junk food with food stamps. I think they should get rice, bean, potato and vegetable ration cards. If you want junk food GET A JOB!

Not everyone that uses food stamps buys junk food or doesn't have a job. In fact I know of 3 families in the same building as me (I live in an apartment) that work thier butts off but still need the help of foodstamps. 2 of them single mothers with 2 kids each. The other couple is about to get married and has one kid. None of them are fat. In fact I know for a fact that one of the single mothers buys more fruit than meat because thats practically all that her kids will eat.

Its funny how you always seem to think that those on welfare don't have jobs. Believe it or not the majority of people in my town that are on foodstamp assistance do have jobs. Granted not all..but definitely the majority.

God this thread is sad. I've seen many of the people in this thread moan and complain about Big Government...yet they seem fine with this intrusion.

I'm 5'8, and if I were 107 I would be anorexic. My healthy weight is between 125 and 135.
