Being from Illinois there is currently a bill that would greatly expand gambling and is supposed to help pay for the debt that my great ol' state has racked up. It seems like a good idea on pen and paper, but then again Nevada isn't doing so hot either.

Thoughts?

I voted maybe. It's one of those things that in a perfect world should not be needed, there are better solutions. However, it is a way to raise revenue.

The record for gambling is not too good. Atlantic City is still a cesspool.

Basically, gambling doesn't produce anything. It's just a transfer of wealth upwards. Though that doesn't mean that gambling will fail (it's done well in Las Vegas) the record isn't so great.

I voted "maybe"

GAMBLING IS WRONG-----Unless the Democrat Party gets a piece of the action..........

Just like DRUG USE IS WRONG.......unitl the Liberal Nanny State saw potential revenues from taxing the hell out of it

Whatever happened to "get the government's dirty hands off the economy?"

"Get the government's dirty hands off the economy! But gambling and drug use are evil! They must be banned!"

....these are the views of the Liberal Nanny State......unless they get a piece of the action.

It sounds like a good idea until you have loved ones that are addicted to gambling and those loved ones have kids and bills to take care of. It amounts to purposely getting everyone addicted to a drug so you rake in tax revenue.

Took a class on the effects of legalized gambling a few years back, and as it turns out legalized gambling doesn't help govermental financial woes. Unless you're Vegas legalized gambling brings in minimal tourist dollars, and the tax revenue you do see is almost entirely cannibalized from other local source. I generally support gambling expansion, but don't think it's going to fix your budget.

Nobody is forcing you to gamble, so it's essentially an optional tax just like sales.

I'm not sure what type of rage virus you have, but aside from your wild accusation that this is a Liberal initiative, I wouldn't understand for one second how making Casino's helps people climb out of debt. The only ones who do are probably the thousand or so workers they hire at the expense of thousands more who come and lose their money regularly.

But, let the free market soar, right?

Gambling I am ok with, however the way that it has been handled is borderline corrupt in my opinion. States will staunchly refuse to allow gambling in many parts of the country until the state needs revenue then suddenly gambling is acceptable and promoted. It just shows that our governments are willing to flop their opinions all for the american $.

The reason why Nevada isn't doing so well is because the tourism industry is pretty much all Nevada has going for it concerning it's economy. Their tourist industry is composed of gambling, legalized prostitution, and easy marriages and divorces. When other people have no expendable income, the tourism industry goes down.

So gambling is only bad for the states if they use it as a cornerstone for their economy. This is why Nevada isn't doing so well. However, Illinois has other important parts of their state economy - agriculture, manufacturing, services, energy, not to mention the fact that Chicago is a major urban area that corporations set up there just because so many others are headquartered there too.

So Illinois may do well to legalize gambling to help bolster the economy and pay off their debt.

Personally, I think gambling should be legalized in more areas.

I am all for personal responsibility. However at the same time I am not for states basically turning people into addicts so they can rake in tax revenue from the addiction. I do not oppose all forms of legalizes gambling, I do support bingo. While it can be addictive like slots or black jack it requires the individual to spend a certain amount of time at it and the individual is limited by the cash they can spend on it because there is only so many cards an individual can handle at ounce.

Even if gambling were legalized around where I live I wouldn't go to gamble. It's up to the choice of the individual to determine whether they want to gamble or not. And not everybody who gambles is a gambling addict.

The fact many states have legalized gambling probably also has to do with the fact Nevada is not raking in the cash like they used to from gambling revenue.

Personally I believe all this is irrelevant because there's no evidence to suggest that allowing such a measure would substantially impact states' budgetary situations. That's just my humble opinion, correct me if I'm wrong.

Isnt Nevada number three in states with the worst economy...job loss...stuff like that??? I think its right behind Michigan and... cant remember the other one, california i think. Not sure the gambling industry is doin a lot for Nevada at this point in time.

NO! For financial reasons. Note that I don’t recall the exact stats, but the result is not good. Here is what most people don’t understand. Most of the casinos and lottery gambling is contracted out to a few (it may be mostly 1) providers of these ‘services’. The main companies are foreign. So most of the money taken in goes for operation of the gaming: salaries, machines, utilities, etc. A portion, not very much, goes to winners; but what is not calculated in anything I saw is how much of the winnings pass back through the ‘process’. And a portion goes to the state. And the ‘profits’ go to the overseas companies. Although the state government has more money to run and lower taxes. The effective result is that less money is circulating in the state, i.e. the state is poorer. There is entertainment provided to the state’s population, but local private companies can do that. So the net is that money is typically moved out of the state by casinos and lotteries.

Just have to mention Native American casinos. I support them because it’s a rational way to get back at the ‘white man’. The reservation is richer, but the state is poorer.
