Both are often praised as the best movie trilogies ever made.

Both the original Star Wars trilogy, and the prequels are better then the Lord of the Rings.

There isn't an option for Alien trilogy or Back to the Future? Also I guess Star Wars. LOTR is gay.

LOTR. The second half of Return of the Jedi wasn't up to the rest of the trilogy.

Come on, Gina! The Battle of Endor is one of the great cinema moments of all time!

"IT'S A TRAP!!" How can you not love that **** ;)

There is only one trilogy, and it ain't Lord of the Rings.

Look guys. You all are missing a very important point:

LOTR.

I liked both, a lot, but there's just no comparison.

The star wars prequels were the biggest pieces of ass hair ever made.

Lord of the Rings beats those.

The original star wars trilogy is a work of art, as is LOTR.

Also the OP should be banned for asking such an unfair question :2razz:

The prequels were awesome, I don't give a damn what you guys say.

Well, let me back up a minute and say this about original Star Wars.

It will always have a special place in my heart, because I was a kid when I first saw it and NOBODY had seen ANYTHING like it before. No one had ever dared DREAM of trying to put a Sci-Fi of such epic proportions on screen, or anything remotely close as far as quantity and quality of special effects.

I mean, even TODAY, most OSW f/x compares favorably to most modern f/x oriented movies.... hell its BETTER f/x that some of this CGI crap.

At the risk of sounding overblown about it, OSW was a mind-expanding experience... I'd never dreamed I'd see anything like that on the big screen, only in my imagination.

I read LOTR in my early teens and loved it; read most of the related books too. I was a mature adult when the movies came out, and was hoping they'd be worthy of JRR Tolkein's grand trilogy... but I secretly harbored grave doubts that any movie could possibly do that. I was pleasantly surprised. Casting choices, superb; costumes, awesome; settings, breathtaking; action, superb; drama, acting, f/x.... yes I know it isn't faithful to every single word of the written books but DAYUM it vastly exceeded my expectations!

There are so MANY great things about LOTR that I could go on for hours, but I'd have to say the quality of casting was key in my appreciation. Viggo Mortensen WAS Aragorn son of Arathorn; Ian McKellen WAS Gandalf. Christopher Lee was PERFECT as Saruman; no one but John Rhys-Davies could possibly have been Gimli.... I could go on and on.

LOTR the books.
Star Wars original 4,5,6 Movies.
LOTR movie trilogy

Star Wars 1,2,3 (Vadar, JarJar, and a lot of naueseating movie moments)
===============
LOTR was far better movie production, but Star Wars was a gem for its time in terms of movies.

Star wars 4,5,6 were likely so good because they are primarily Lucas's vision, tied to his career, etc. These days a movie production typically gets watered down by industry and all the hands dipping into it. They get dumbed down, and it sucks. That, and they really did go man-gay in LOTR, they could have toned that down and upped the badassness of the main characters...that was their choice. I loved LOTR books, but there are more thrilling books in the genre. The real weight of LOTR come in when you know the backdrop via the Silmarillion.

Hobbit's coming though, and if they do it right, it could rank higher than LOTR. All depends on if Smaug let's them know who is boss and gets all Trump on them, and if the mirkwood spiders freak us out since they talk some crazy ****.

The Balrog of Moria and Gandalf's fight with him topped the movie moments IMO. If the movies had been more badass like that, I could see it taking the crown. But Star Wars was nonstop goodness, and Empire was so good it helped offset any backpedalling they did with Jedi.
