I support a minimum wage law

I support minimum benefits law
I support Maximum benefits law
I oppose a minimum wage law
I oppose a maximum wage law
I oppose a minimum benefits law
I oppose a maximum benefits law
other/I do not know

When I say benefits I mean things like pensions, sign on bonuses, bonuses, profit sharing and other things that an employee may get.

About the only thing I support is minimum wage law.

price floors and price ceilings tend to produce powerful unintended consequences irregardless of the particular good involved. including labor.

I support a minimum wage but that's about it. There should be no limit to how far a dedicated person should be able to go. I also feel that if you're older than a teenager and you're making minimum wage, the problem is with you, not the system.

Minimum Wage amounts to $15,080 in a 52 week year. The Federal Poverty Level for one person is $10,890 for all States other than Alaska, and Hawaii which are slightly higher.

It is very difficult live on Minimum Wage in most States, I would like to see it Raised to $8.00 an hour, in the hope that people can manage to get by on it.

Minimum Wage = a minimum of Unemployment......

Surely a minimum wage of $50.00/hr would solve all problems........

Its not difficult but impossible in most states to live on minimum wage if your paying your own bills and rent.....if there were no minimum wage law there would be alot more people making less than that....I for one do not trust employers to do anything less than pay the least they can....

The spike in unemployment was not due to the minimum wage.

Without a minimum wage the income inequality in this country would grow even worse, and the standard of living would also go down. No one in this country should work at the same pay rate as someone in a third world country.

In 2004 I made $7.35/hour working 35 hours a week. I wasn't eligible for health benefits, so my take home was about $205.80 a week, which was $10,701 a year. On that I paid for an apartment, electricity, basic cable/internet, and food. I didn't get new clothes very often and didn't go out much (I was only 18, not a lot of "going out" options anyway), but I survived. My apartment was $320 in rent (decent-ish area, low crime, older complex) and electricity and cable were $100 combined, on average.

Now, I realize that was 7 years ago...but doing a quick search in that area I could still get an apartment at that rent rate. I might have some difficulties in the electricity area now, though.

In Texas, the current minimum wage is $7.25. When I was 18 it was $5.50. I worked ONE job at minimum wage....as a carphop at Sonic. They said that because people tip, we got minimum wage rates. I usually averaged about $75-150 in tips a week, depending on my schedule. I also worked at Hallmark, 7-11, and an ice rink during high school and made more than minimum wage at all of them.

I think it's possible for a single person to survive on a pay rate at or near minimum wage in many areas. I think it'd be a struggle, and they're not going to have a two-story brick home in a gated subdivision, or a brand new Mercedes in their parking spot...but it's still doable. Then again, the jobs that pay at or very close to minimum wage aren't exactly advancement positions...or even very challenging. Low-paying positions are usually true entry-level, menial tasks, or jobs geared towards people who are seeking as little professional responsibility as possible.

Because of that, I have no problem keeping the minimum wage where it is. These jobs are not designed for people to make a living doing them. They supplemental positions, or positions for those seeking extra or extraneous income. If you're using these jobs to survive on I think the issue is you, not the pay.

I definitely don't support a maximum wage. You stifle growth and recruitment that way. When my former employer announced that there was a pay cap on my position I decided I wouldn't be sticking around. There was no room for growth into other positions and no chance of increasing my salary beyond the cap I had hit. I wasn't content making $35k/year for the rest of my career. If we make a "maximum wage" I'd bet good money that companies would create maximum wages at all levels of employ.

So raising the minimum wage has no effect whatsoever.........

.......we could raise the minimum wage to $50.00/hr and unemployment wouldnt increase at all......

All a minimum wage does is eliminate the jobs once available to teenagers and low skilled workers..........

Those unemployment numbers were due to the recession brought on by Wallstreet screwing around, and you damn well know it.

Just plain false. It keeps those teenagers, and low skilled workers from being exploited by the companies, and allow them to be paid decently for their work.

An employer with 8 people making minimum wage + the 2007 Minimum Wage increase........

8 x $2.10 x 40 x 52 = $34,944.00

Where does the employer get the extra 35 grand........besides their money tree?

Raise the minimum wage and you simply raise unemployment......

I have no idea what state that is...but in NY and NJ you cant get an apartment even one thats falling aparty for under 700 a month plus utils...and try paying an electric bill in either of those two states....look in the Northeast NO ONE can survive alone on minimum wage paying their own rent and bills no ONE

...well, do you think every worker of every "third world" country makes the equivalent of ~USD$0.03/hr? why?

Or how about people don't try to get by on it? Minimum wage isn't supposed to be a living wage. If you're that unskilled, you'd better be a teenager still living at home with your parents, otherwise you ought to qualify for a higher wage. I'm really tired of people trying to support a family on minimum wage. If you can't make money, don't have a family.

I clearly stated that I live in Texas. I also said, "I think it's possible for a single person to survive on a pay rate at or near minimum in many areas."

NY and NJ have a pretty high cost of living. But you know...the states can increase the minimum wage above the federal level if they choose to. Looks like New York and New Jersey didn't. Either way...if you're at the point where you're trying to live on your own, why are you working at McDonalds? Here's some info about minimum wage earners:

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median annual income of a U.S. worker is $32,140. Federal minimum wage is currently $5.85 an hour, or about $11,500 per year — just above the poverty line. Of the 76.5 million people paid by the hour in the United States in 2006, 2.2% make minimum wage or less. Here are some generalizations we can make about minimum wage workers:

•Most minimum wage earners are young. While 2.2% of all hourly workers earn minimum wage or less, just 1.4% of workers over the age of 25 are paid at or below the Federal minimum wage. More than half (51.2%) of minimum wage workers are between 16 and 24 years old. Another 21.2% are between 25 and 34.
•Most minimum wage earners work in food service. Nearly two-thirds of those paid minimum wage (or less) are food service workers. Many of these people receive supplemental income in the form of tips, which the government does not track.
•Most minimum wage earners never attended college. Just 1.2% of college graduates are paid the minimum wage. If you only have a high school degree, you’re more likely (1.9%) to be paid minimum wage. Those without a high school degree are nearly three times as likely (3.7%) to earn minimum wage. 59.8% of all minimum wage workers have no advanced education.
•Finally, as you might expect, part-time workers are five times more likely to be paid the minimum wage than full-time workers.

And here is the link. It's from 2007, but the trends are similar now, though the rate has changed.

I have always liked minimum wage, and I believe it is important. The maximum wage I feel like I shouldn't have voted for, kind of a stupid idea barring someones potential. I also like this minimum benefits idea. Doesn't at all have to be full benefits, maybe just require employers to provide basic insurance policies.

I support a minimum wage BUT it was never intended to be something a family of 4 was to live on so it's never going to do that.
