I am curious to know just how many people have voluntarily payed more Federal taxes then what was required of them.

We have seen often enough the idea that we need to raise taxes on the wealthy in order to solve our debt issue. But do we practice what we preach or should only the wealthy contribute more?

well, the President doesn't - why should I?

Is this even legal?

Is that even legal? I don't remember the option on any of my tax forms.

I'd be willing to pay extra in taxes, and I think that taxes need to be raised across the board, but that's a bit of an empty platitude for someone with no prospects of future employment.

absolutely. not only does the treasury allow you to donate to paying down the national debt; but you certainly aren't required to take any deductions.

Absolutely not, I won't subsidize corruption anymore than I have to.

Well, then, I suppose I have. I don't normally claim myself.

Raising the taxes are the wealthy is necessary because:

(1) reductions in spending that could make not raising taxes feasible aren't possible in a brief period of time

(2) the middle class is sunken into credit; only the wealthy have money to tax

I'm disappointed there wasn't a "**** NO" poll option, so the "No" option will suffice.

2. Not true. Raising taxes on the wealthy do not solve the budget deficit at all. For instance Obama tax increases would only solve 6% of the budget deficit, even if Obama predictions come true. We need to reverse Bush tax cut completely, not just for the rich. and we need implement GOP budget cuts.

very important to note : they would not. as they never have. static scoring is only a starting point, anyone who depends on it is playing a fools game.

in the real world, hiking tax rates won't get you any extra revenue - and it is very likely to get you less.

I think making drastic tax cuts is feasible, it's where the cuts are made that is key.

Also, why do you think the middle class is sunken into credit? I believe it's largely due to poor life style choices and living beyond ones means.

I never have but I know some people who have the government withhold more money out of their paycheck so they can get it back later. It sort of makes sense so that they can get a big payout after taxes but on the other hand with the value of the dollar shrinking you are basically getting less than you are putting in.

From each according to their ability? I oppose raising taxes on any group because the government needs to demonstrate it can cut spending before it demands more wealth from anyone but if taxes have to go up they should go up first on the groups that are currently unaware (or ignore) the fact that increased government spending COSTS MONEY and that is NOT the rich but rather the middle class that drives so much of the spending

Who is WE, Mr New Zealand?

Because, across the Western world, real wages have declined dramatically relative to the rate of inflation. What do I win?

This is one of the questions I have always had regarding politicians like Pelosi. Her and her husband fall into the "rich" category. Why have they not just paid what they felt was the "fair share" without being told. I also can understand that they are only obligated to pay what the tax code calls for.

I also tend to set my tax withholding so I only get back a very small amount or $0 at the end of the year. To pay more in as a savings device is only give the govt. a free loan. It is my money, not the govt, I can do better with my savings than the govt. holding it for me as a tax return.

Because that sort of talk (from Pelosi and those like her) is nothing but propaganda. If they really believe what they said, they'd do it without being required by law or tax code.

did you ever see that clip of bill maher on his talk show where someone asked him (after he whined about the Bush Tax cuts) if he sent extra money to the government to make up for the cut he received? sadly I couldn't find it on youtube but it was a hilarious mix of whining and hypocrisy. The little weasel hemmed and hawed and finally sputtered that only he doing that wouldn't "matter" and would only be a "drop in the bucket". I wonder if all those liberal control freaks who want more government and ingratiate themselves with their Obamessiah by sending him a letter asking for higher taxes have actually paid more to the government or are rather trying to promote the empty suit's re election while trying to screw over the upper middle class at the same time

People can still learn to live within their means. My family grew up basically in poverty. We didn't have nice TVs, had one car (took the subway when we needed to). We never ate out and bought off brand foods. We made very little but didn't go in debt because we lived within our means. I have seen many middle class people go into debt because they buy houses they cannot afford, they buy cars they cannot afford, they finance major purchases on credit cards like computers and expensive TVs. People need to learn to live with what they have and be content, not to accrue debt and finance everything.

I haven't seen it, but I certainly have seen enough of Maher to know the hemming and hawing you're talking about.

Since we have had a few replies I will answer. No I have not voluntarily payed extra taxes. With that said I would voluntarily pay extra if and when I felt the government would spend it where I thought it should be spent and not waste it on things I do not feel that it should be. Seeing how Im more likely to win the lottery twice then to ever see that happening I doubt I ever voluntarily pay more then I am required to.
