Most of you have probably heard about GE not paying any taxes in '09 (and even getting tax money back) due to clever loophole manipulation. Vote what you think of this.

Corporation ain't a person, it's a machine. Tax the money when it goes into the corporation and when it comes out of the corporation, and stop trying to stick our fingers in the gears.

Ummmm..... no. A corporation is treated like a person on a legal basis. For them to NOT pay taxes is VERY criminal to me and those responsible should be in jail.

GE's clever accounting trick was that they lost money in 2009. No income, no income taxes.

I am 100% for tariffs. You want to do business in the US.... PAY!

Absolutely. Especially if you want to sell here, when you're moving all your manufacturing overseas. They can either play by American rules or be treated like foreigners.

GE employs a total of 287,000 people world wide, with 133,000 employees here in the US with $70.5B in revenues.

All of these people pay income tax, sales tax, Local, State, and Federal, and spend money in the local communities, and an employer they have to pat their portion of the employees total withholding for Medicare for example, all this adds up and is helping in ways that are never considered when that case is made that they are rich and need to be hit and hit hard with more taxes.

So if we pile on does it cost jobs and reduce the taxes paid by all those who are laid off.

I say leave them alone and I think it's a no brainers because profit makes growth possible.

Exactly. Corporations aren't rich. They're nothing more than big stacks of money, owned by anyone who even so much as fancies himself middle class in this country.

Property doesn't pay taxes. You can tax property all you want, but it's always people who actually pay. We already tax the money when it goes in, and tax the money when it comes back out-- so why are we taxing the process itself?

This is absolutely hilarious cheerleading....GE MADE 9 billion dollars and not only didnt pay ONE DIME but got a 300,000,000 tax credit...and your writhing your hands they pay to much....laugh....and wheres the growth ??? when more than half their profit was made outside of the USA...please...corporations suck

So, if they followed the law, found existing loopholes and used them... they actually broke the law and should be punished? OR are you in fact admitting they broke no law, but should be punished anyway?

Tell that to the conservative controlled Surpreme Court....
Good luck; Obama may never be able to fix this one.

Who wrote the tax laws allowing GE to "get off Scott free" ??
And the laws apply to all corporations..

GE paid taxes.

PolitiFact Ohio | Rep. Marcy Kaptur says G.E. pays no taxes and creates no jobs but makes record profits

Try again.

Furthermore, it makes no sense for the Federal government to tax worldwide income that cannot be sourced to any real material behavior or goods in America. So if GE lost the bank in the US but made lots overseas, it should not have to pay US federal corporate income tax.
They followed the law and should not be punished. And, the law is what the US voters have selected indirectly; they are allowed to be stupid.
I have inside knowledge of GE ’08 thru ’10. One thing was the effort to move jobs to India. Also to bring unqualified Indian engineers here because qualified American engineers were deemed unqualified by GE and this is supported by US law. Yup, they aren’t breaking any laws. It’s not against the law for GE to help write the laws they will not break. So who is feigning surprise?

Some data from the web site given by obvious Child:
In 2010, GE had 133,000 employees in the United States. In 2004, it had 165,000. The declines occurred every year, totaling 32,000 jobs lost in six years. If you went back even further you’d see more domestic job shedding.
Meantime, the company’s foreign employment has shot upward. In 1996, GE had 84,000 workers in foreign countries. The number reached 172,000 by 2007 before dipping to 154,000 in 2010. GE itself has said it: There were growth opportunities abroad.

GE should be out of business. They do nothing for the people who need energy. They overbill and steal so they can have their mansions all over the world and their fine wine. plus, all the dick lickers they can find.

Sure. But if all we want is the money, then why aren't we obtaining it as efficiently as possible?
You're kidding... aren't you?

GE and other USA corporations are so easy to demonize it would be malpractice for politicians to not have a go at them.

Wow, what a stupid post!

Oh, sure. But that requires regulation. The thing is, a corporation is not a thing that can pay taxes; it is a thing that people pay taxes for. We already tax all of the money that comes out of the corporation, whether in wages or profits, and we already tax all of the money that goes in to the corporation. Trying to tax the money while it's still inside the corporation accomplishes the same results as increasing those taxes individually, except that it is more complicated and thus less efficient.

It's the ultimate in "feel good" legislation that does more harm than good.

And the dumbmasses are so easily fooled.

Unfortunately, I was unable to vote as my answer was not available. Should GE pay taxes. My answer is no, but not because they found some loophole. They should not pay as no company should pay taxes.
